Housing costs...

Why are houses so expensive in France? At least in Dept 10, it is largely rural, nothing happening in the region but try finding a house you can just move into for under 200K. Even lofts are in that range, which is ridiculous.

Just trying to understand and vent...

What would a young couple in France be willing to pay, or could afford to pay  for a house they could live in straight away. I am interested because my son is buying a property together with his girlfriend here in England and they are going for one of these "key worker" plans, where they buy half of the house and for the other half they pay a rent, because it was impossible for them to buy outright although they are both on a teacher's salary (which I think is not that bad). They still have of course debts from their studies.

Where have you been looking? Sorry, I don't mean what area, but which agents etc?

Can't speak for Dept 10, but in the area we bought (53), we certainly found it well worth while looking at the french language websites of the french agents and notaires. We so often found the same property advertised on an "English" site for considerably more.

We ended up buying through a very french immobilier, and got a very good deal.

Some we found useful, in which you can specify the area and type of property were.

Going to the original question of why the prices are so high in 10 - looking at the map it looks as if 10 may well be on the route of the new TGV Est line - making both Paris and Strasbourg easy commuting targets - and both have very high housing costs compared with most of the rest of France and where 200k wouldn't buy anything worth having at all.

When the TGV high speed line arrived in the Drome it doubled house prices - even though Paris was over 2 1/2 hours away.
