Hi

Fairy liquid plasticises mortar, but adversely affects its final strength and durability. If you are laying a few blocks at home the fairy liquid is not going to be a problem and it is better than nothing.

Lignosulphonate type plasticisers are the proper product and agin it is important to gauge properly – too much will affect the strength of the finished brickwork.

The amount of water required to reach a specific workability will be reduced. The use of plasticiser also allows less cement - the ratios change - see plasticiser pack for details.

It works by lower the surface tension of the water; thereby increasing it’s wetting properties.

Good quality Plasticiser will also enter air bubbles into the mix,  which give expansion paths for water to freeze into during cold weather - preventing cracking.
