Fixing timer/thermostat to boiler ??

We had a substantial and effective Wiesmann (?) condensation boiler fitted 18 months ago but it was installed sans any means of regulating on/off timing (at the moment its on one of those €4 timer thingies at the plug end) . There's a panel where the on/off switch is that looks like it should come out for such an item to be installed - is this likely ?

The follow up question is then - how difficult is the installation of said device / where would one buy it / and, because it's a gas boiler, does it need to be done by a registered plumber ?

NB for all these questions....er.....the same for thermostats.

My first step would be to get the name and type of the boiler, then use google.fr to see the manufacturer's website.

Most of the info you need would be there under accessories.

Usually details of timers/controllers and wiring for thermostats are given in the instruction manuals supplied with the boiler.Most boilers come with two manuals;1.an installer's manual,which you may or may not be given and 2. an user's manual,a much smaller book which tells you how to operate the boiler.The installer's manual will usually have wiring diagrams for all types of control system.You can usually download these manuals from the manufacturer's website if not given the paper ones.

If you can't find a suitable module from the boiler manufacturer itself, I recommend next time you are in the UK, pick up a wall-mounted timer, usualy sold for immersion heaters, from somewhere like B & Q. More beafy than the cheapy French ones you plug in. And the wiring will end up looking less of a mare's nest of plugs and timers and sockets too.

Better yet, you can use any programmer within reason, as long as it is wired up correctly.

Same with a thermostat.

The progrmmer doesn't have to be within the boiler housing: it can be external.

Using a dedicated manufacturer's programmer makes life a bit easier.

In principle, both the central heating programmer and the thermostat are automatic switches, which simply turn the system on and off, but cutting power to the boiler's inner control system.

It becomes more complicated when you have control valves to provide priority to either heating or hot water.

A good programer, today, has inbuilt battery back-up to preserve both time and memory (Power Cuts!) and a wide variety of programmes to suit most users.

Personally, I avoid the more complex prgrammers as you need lots of time and a PhD in logic to programme them! And by the time you want/need to re-set the damned thing, you have forgotten how to do it and have to start right from the beginning, again!
