Insulation

Has any one had experience of using multi-reflective multi-layered insulation?  It is clearly much easier to install and thinner but does it work as effectively as mineral wool or glass fibre?  Can we believe the claims of the manufacturers?

if we are talking rigid polyisocyanurate (pir) insulation like tri iso9 kingspan Therma pitch or triple R, then yes it is THEE only stuff to use and although much more expensive there is no comparison to rockwool type insulations. Not only does it retain heat but in hot summers it is superb for keeping a room cool particularly on vaulted ceilings. I fit this stuff all the time and have it in my own house it is excellent.

I have found the reflective stuff keeps the heat out but is not great with keeping the heat in. Consequently I have now started installing 100mm of laine de verre as well as the reflective stuff, I'm fed up seeing my boiler drinking fioul as though its lager in a pub in the uk on a friday night. Hope this helps.

Could it be that the reflective mulitlayer stuff is getting a bad press because of the way its installed?  As I see it, if you fit a thick layer of glass fibre stuff you not only get insulation, but also draught proofing.  It is difficult with the thin multilayer stuff to effectively seal the gaps between roof timbers and the like.  Now, if you are installing the multilayer stuff from the top - ie the roof tiles and battens are off, then its much easier to get a proper overall seal.

Manufacturers claims, well, if you believe all you read then more fool you. The claims will be based on an ideal installation, in a perfect environment, probably a small closed box in a Lab!  200mm  + of rock wool, you can even "feel" it working!

Well I dont know, hence the "If" we are talking pir insulation. The posts following mine seem to be under the impression  that it is pir rigid type insulation that is installed between rafter...... perhaps the O.P. could clarify.

On reflection I would rather not know. I think there are many people on this forum that go out of their way to be rude, I certainly am not one to be easily offended but I have an aversion to mannerless folk.....i usually come here to to read the renovation threads as I have an interest in the way that the construction industry operates in France, if I can help any others through 25 years experience in the building trade then I do so gladly and with courtesy, I, like many, can get drawn into petty arguments when I consider myself to be slighted and will speak my mind as I have done on here and make no apologies for doing so.

I took time to browse through the forum as a whole the other day and was disturbed to read some staggeringly rude responses to the most genial of posts and an overtly zealous preoccupation with some "newbie" posters personal business, and personal affairs. I have never asked any questions on this forum as there is an inclination by many old hands to be curt, discourteous and ill mannered and do not wish to be reproached for seeking a civil response to a civil question.

There are many clearly amiable and friendly people that frequent this forum, but sadly there are a number of acerbic supposed know it alls that make this forum a rather unpleasent place to visit. I am a long standing member of a trades forum where many many people seek advise from the experts and  without exception are treat with respect and politeness even when asked the most absurd of questions...but then I believe this is a basic common courtesy. Well rant over . Good luck to the forum, and in true Del boy style bonjour and farewell and thanks for all the fish.

think you should read the questions asked in the primary posting before you throw your trowel out of the pram .

I used Airflex fitted on the outside and liteau/tuiles plates over. It was installed and taped up as per the spec. It is not as good as 200mm of rockwool in the winter but I think it is probably better at keeping heat out in he summer. Overall I may use it again but I have reservations.

Clearly it has some advantages but if winter fuel economy/comfort is driving your decision I would consider not using it or or a hybrid likeusing  the extra 100mm of rockwool as well as suggested by Dc.

BTW DC how exactly have you installed the two types together?

Hi bill,

Stapled the foil to the roof joists, installed placo on suspended metal rail and then put laine de verre in the gap between the two. I used that Airflex - it is good stuff as it is fairly rigid but of course a bit pricey. On balance laine de verre and an air conditioning unit.

regards

It would be a shame to lose the input of someone like L_A who clearly knows what he is talking about, which can't be said for all contributors. You do however have to be reasonably thick-skinned when using a general forum such as this - rather than a specialist trade forum - and accept that some people will use it as a free way to show off or just as a means of "communicating". (Perhaps they have difficulty communicating in the real world.)

I tend to skim through and ignore the "private club" posts (and anyone who tries to prove their importance BY POSTING IN CAPITAL LETTERS) and pick out the useful stuff. If someone says something rude, well frankly that demonstrates their own shortcomings more than anyone else's. And as all the posters are anonymous, anyway, what have they achieved?

So keep in touch, please, L_A. I will doubtless welcome your advice at some point!

Sorry if this upsets anyone. Just ignore it.
