Wall Fixings

When I hung a large mirror some years ago I used fixings which I seem to remember had a "butterfly" arrangement which expanded within the cavity wall when screwed in.

I now wish to move the mirror and remove these special fixings which are unsightly on the wall. I have removed the screw which leaves a head having four lugs which have bitten into the plaster board. I always thought that when the screw was removed the butterly arrangement within the cavity either fell off into the cavity or retracted making it easy to remove the fitting but, although I've managed to get a reasonably firm grip with long nosed pliers, it just ain't coming out.

Any suggestions as I want to cause minimum damage to the plaster board.
