1. BBC have changed transponder modulation from QPSK to 8PSK to enhance transponder capacity. Some receivers might need retuning. Read here
2. One of the biggest security problems is that most people feel secure once they have installed an anti-virus package. The software usually reports "you are secure". People actually believe this and never do a manual scan or take other preventive measures like a firewall.. This false sense of security makes users very vulnerable. When a scan reports 'nothing found' that is exactly correct: it does not mean your computer is clean, just that it could not find it. I believe that in reality almost 100% of computers is infected with a kind of malware. Many (government sponsored) spyware is not even detectable, but a properly configured firewall will prevent unauthorised connections to the outside world. I change detection software around once a month and almost every month the newly installed software detects 'stuff'  that the previous one did not..
3. But you lose 2 weeks of interest on every transaction and that is quite a lot. Unless you do not move your money at all the real interest rate is 2.16% and not 2.25%. The tax free bit helps[:)]
4. France has it's own tax-haven called Monaco. To prevent the entire French population from moving to Monaco this is forbidden by law. This law only applies to people with the French nationality and not, lets say ehh,  Belgium for instance....[blink]
5. The UK does not borrow money, it creates sterling out of thin air and pretends all is fine. Just 'keeping up appearances' with Farage posing as Mrs Bucket: he actually believes it.
6. UK freesat only, not Sky subscription channels nor any other satellite.
7. You can use a torodial dish instead of a normal dish to receive satellites in 40 degrees distance. I currently use a Wavefrontier T55 to receive Astra1, 2,3 , Hotbird and the French satellite at 5 west at the same time. Such a dish is neither big (57*63 cm) nor expensive (€55,-) but hard to get in France.(pic) The biggest problem  investing in a dish right now is that we don not know the required dish size next year when the new Astra2 satellites become active, especially for the southern part of France
8. So, you are preparing for 'the worst" when Astra2F takes over.[:D] Someone else just reminded me that the Astra2 E-G satellites will also carry beams for North Africa and the Middle-east. That means the frequencies used for the UK spotbeam might simply be re-used for those beams (cheap!) and that would effectively make it impossible to receive UK television in areas closer to those beams than to the UK beam, no matter what dish size is used. No problem for France, but it could create a big problem in southern Spain.
9. The HD version of TF1 has now started on eutelsat 9A 12034 v 3/4 27500 dvbs-2 as TF1 HD SUISSE (same transponder as the other "Suisse" versions)
10. I just read the same subject on a Dutch forum (for Dutch in France) and they tell tell Axa to stuff it. Axa say it is because of EU legislation and it is not, it is just Axa trying to complete their customer profile for their own commercial purposes. The questions go way beyond legislative purposes. Should they object:  let them know you are now considering changing to another bank, with a smile.[:)]
11. The separator filters are in, íf the right socket is used. Check this pdf for the different versions available here.
12. You cry victory way too soon, just a couple of months have passed, not years. The pound is doomed, give it time and meanwhile read the latest independent analyses here .
13. It proves that propaganda works. The pound is a save haven, like Pearl Harbor on December 6 1941.
14. As stated many times: whatever happens to Greece is completely irrelevant for the Eurozone: a drop in the Ocean. Hyped by UK and US media to divert attention from the real problems: the UK and the US. The Eurozone is working hard to solve the problems, the UK and US have only kicked the can down the road with massive money printing. At least the US admits to this fact and will start to cut spending after the elections in November. The UK however is pretending to impose 'austerity'. There is no austerity when you spend 8% more than you earn and create 35% of your total (official) debt out of thin air. The biggest problem of the UK is that its population is in compete denial which makes it impossible to do what should be done.
15. #radiolondres: Price of food: cheese 53 ,  goulash 47 [B]
16. 5 years ago I installed this Belkin gold series surgemaster which is advertised for an 'extreme protection level' and 'unlimited' warranty. The first thunderstorm came only two weeks later and destroyed the surgemaster, adsl modem and adsl filter->completely useless [:@]. There is only one protection: disconnect your equipment.
17. An 'informed' journalist wrote that 45 dBW (90 cm dish) will be at the German western border. When you extrapolate that to France you will need your 1 meter dish in 24. Time will tell, I don not expect any new information until we provide it ourselves when 2F is operational early next year. SES nowadays seems keen to keep this information secret. [:(]
18. No, it is actually the BBC that are definitely 'not amused' with the fact that in some countries ( esp. Switzerland ) the BBC can be watched for free on cable TV. They would 'prefer' to get paid, like The Netherlands and Belgium do.  Sky will have no problem as their programs are scrambled they can remain on a European beam and  they do not need to differentiate between EU countries, just subscriptions of EU citizens. Sky is now allowed (though not official yet) but not obligated to sell subscriptions outside the UK. Astra2F launch is planned for Q4 2012, expect it to be operational early 2013. Astra2E is due in Q2 2013
19. Yes, the UK beam is designed that way. You can see that they even rotated the beam a bit to prevent eastern exposure. A satellite at 28 degrees east pointing at the UK makes it difficult to that. It would be much easier to produce such a beam from the French position at 5 west.
20. The 55 dBmW matches the sky minidish. What we do not know is how fast the signal will degrade outside this marker, but it should be much steeper than with the 2D or 1N. Should they decide to switch to the  KA band instead of the current KU band , that would end reception outside the published beam. However, that would mean a new lnb for every customer, a boost for the economy [:)] , but very unlikely.
21. The first footprints of the next generation UK satellites are now public and seem to confirm our worst expectations: click [:(]
22.
@ teapot TF1 is encrypted on Astra 1 for those oh-so-precious rights holders.
But those rights holders don't seem to mind that TF1 is not encrypted on Eutelsat9A (9 east). This satellite has a huge footprint and also carries W9 and even M6 in HD unencrypted! When you combine 9 east with 5 west you get most of the French channels completely for free.
23. More and more TV's are equipped with DVB-T/C and DVB-S2 tuners. So they are capable of receiving both the (French-) terrestrial channels and any satellite channels. Check the manual carefully and you might even be able to tell the TV that the terrestrial tuner is located in France while at the same time the satellite tuner is located in the UK ( thus acting like a freesat box) But you will allways be able to use your old freesat box if you wish, even when it is just SD.
24. Yes, that is the consensus for the FTA channels. Astra1N was not designed to deliver a spotbeam, nor was the Astra2D actually because there were no FTA channels yet back then. (FTV card, remember) It was renamed spotbeam to help the BBC escape Sky's grip. Current technology is much better, a very narrow spotbeam can be created around the UK. The channel islands will give reception in France an advantage, at least in the western part. Maybe they will even produce a 2nd narrow beam around Gibraltar. Rumer has it that the Astra2D satellite will move to the Astra3 position, together with the Astra2A and Astra1E (again) to provide backup service for the Astra3B satellite.
25. BBC will transfer to the Astra1N on the 24th : http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/aboutthebbc/2012/02/changes-to-bbc-services-on-sat.shtml Don't get used to the powerful signal in southern France, this will only last 2 years
