The Thames is constantly monitored for flow rate and the sluices are opened and shut to control it.  They were when I had a boat and paid my bit to put it in the Thames at Reading many years ago . . The Thames barrier also comes into the calculation  re tidal surge .... I don't think its just a question of opening the locks and letting it all rip through into London.... I imagine the cost of London being flooded and saying goodbye to the underground system  has a lot to do with how the Thames is controlled and how flood water is held back  ...It is small change the payouts for flooded houses up stream  if it  prevents the City of London  being flooded .

I ask as I know if I have to see the Doctor I have in France  I have to pay him E23... I am wondering if he referred me to Hospital and I did not go if I would get a bill ? Today I note that in 1213 the cost of failed to turn up 1st appointments in NHS hospitals was  £225 million . As someone who is often told on the door step by patients,I have driven miles to pick up and take in, they are not going . I think the time has come to bill those who fail to advise the NHS hospitals that they are not going...They are too lazy to pick up a phone .  I hear all sorts of excuses  but one of the best was "My sister has come down from London we are going shopping "  I would have sent her a bill for £50 I had driven over 25 miles to get to her . I have lost count of the number of times I have been told by neighbors I have called on when patients fail to come to the door that they are on holiday . I have had three people fail the go in in one day... The NHS  have to pay me for my wasted journey costs ... I think when the patient does call in and staff fail to pass on cancelled appointments to transport providers they should have £50 taken off salary.....They would soon remember to do it  and it might just bring the £225 million a year down

It would appear her "resting " in hospital  could last a long time as its reported she is still unable to "stand up " ....

There are cars that have electric connections in the plenum .  In the case of Rovers the engine management  box   ( printed circuit )  is mounted in there and they ended  up submerged as the plenum fills up with water over time . Go round a tight bend and the water moves  to the end of the plenum onto the electrics and its a sudden stop ! The previous post re cleaning  debris out of  the plenum  regularly is good advice and could be a big money saver if the engine management  box is in  there .

Most reliable we had was my wife's Volvo 360... After 14 years with only a snapped clutch cable to be replaced it failed the MOT  due to rust in suspension leg mount . It went off to the fire service for them to practice cutting people out of crashed cars . Any value from scrap after into the Fire Service charity fund   Its worth a thought if anybody has an old car to get rid of  and you can  drive it round to  the fire station . .  

Valerie Trierweiler according to the  TV news this evening has been in hospital suffering with " A touch of the Blues " ... Is this an illness that is catching in France ?  If it is  so serious a person requires admitting to a ward I would like to know how to avoid it ...... Or is it as I suspect her just using a hospital to hide in as the staff can fend off the press ?

R H is not the only one that is having car problems in these weather conditions we have to suffer at the moment . I have just got my car back from the garage after water got in the electrics. I have a diesel  and thought I would be better off than most in the wet . The garage was  starting to dry out another car just in when I collected mine .... Lesson learned 4 or 5 inches of water  may not look much to drive through and you may even manage to do it ok.... Its well  after when the damp gets in the electrics things  go wrong  and you have to get your wallet out ....

There is a first time for everything ...and I had mine today ...... I was forced to turn back and abandon a drive into Saftesbury at Tollard Royal due to road closures by flooding ..I have never experienced that before ! . Many of our  village roads here in Dorset  now have fast moving water going down  them as its pouring off  fields and out of the chalk hills ... .  I hope other forum members are safe and if planning a trip.  Check you can get to your destination ....Expect to be diverted if going off the main roads into Dorset villages .

I am so glad the fabrics used when I was a kid are  gone ...Gaberdine raincoats that were useless for a start.. Having to set off in short trousers through snow drifts  to walk to school .Remember drying rooms in schools?  ....Coats were still damp to put on when going home ...its a wonder we all survived ...
