My point, I didn't give a toss if a guy got his 'there' and 'their' mixed up as long as I could understand the gist of what was written. I was more concerned the guy could navigate, look after an injured buddy or not trash himself on an unexploded item of ordnance. Life skills are a damn site more important, especially in the world we live in today.
I think you're getting cross and taking things out of context, d-et-e.   You may despise the rest of us for not being out there in what you think of as the real world, but somebody's got to do it, eh?  As for "the world today"......... sounds good, but it's not so different from the world any other day, really.
I have re-read Daryls post and can't see where he said that he despises you or others SB, perhaps I have missed something in another post? Surely you don't agree that each time some one posts on this forum the said post should be corrected because of bad spelling, punctuation or grammar? And it would seem that if someone posts a disagreement with one of the regular posters they are immeditely attacked from almost all sides, and the world today IS changing and young and old are using txt speak more and more, I don't like it but sometimes use it when chatting online to youngsters in our family and also because my typing is not fast enough sometimes. No offence is meant to anyone or anything by this post  [:D]
I made a post and your response was 'testicles' ot words to the effect thereof. So why such a rude response, and are you able to back it up?
You may be good with punctuation & grammar Dick but you obviously have trouble with the written word, I actually wrote 'testiculation' must be too much 'pride'  [:)] I have to agree with Daryl, better to get your message across, no matter how badly written than to never post at all, which is what a lot of people new to the forum would think if they read this thread.
Absolutely not, Catalpa. As teachers we probably read more across a wider range of readers. The rest of your comment is, to be honest, just too silly to respond to. Dago - would you like to - are you able to - expand on your answer, including the reasons for your response? Just being rude doesn't denote intelligence...
I don't actually remember trying to claim intelligence, far from it. I was trying to show my ignorance and obviously I have succeeded[;-)] But I do not recall being rude unlike your response to Catalpa. What exactly was it that you needed expanding?
 4. We were once at a 21st birthday bash and nobody would get up and dance until the DJ switched to Free and Alright Now.....the floor was soon full of all the Uncles, Aunties and Grans & Grandads[:)] we knew all of the words too....[:-))]
This will no doubt offend some, but I'm not sure I completely agree with you, Susan. There are degrees of all of these things. Punctuation: Yes. We sometimes see completely unpunctuated posts, that is not just lazy, but also a clear 'disrespect message' to the readers. No reason for that, except possibly low intellect, but then would people who are incapable of understanding basic punctuation be posting on a forum like this? My verdict - punctuate properly. Learn the use of the apostrophe, it isn't hard. When in doubt, leave it out, but at least give the reader a clue about where sentences begin and end. Spelling: There are dyslexics - but that is relatively easy to spot. There are people with spelling blind spots - I have some of those, and they are quite frustrating. Some people missed out on formal education, but may be otherwise 'intelligent' - though that is a problematic formulation. Some people just can't spell very well. See comments about 'intelligence' above. Some people mis-spell on purpose in order to either appear uneducated or to pretend to be someone else. None of these include typos, which are usually easy to spot, and get everybody. Typos increase exponentially with alcohol consumption. Grammar: Generally quite good, not in the formal sense, but as everyday colloquial grammar goes it is usually done quite well. You don't often see ungrammatical posts here, or on other forums. Not me in teacher mode, honest...
Testiculation....[:P]

 7. Don't know if this relates to exactly the problem you are having but there are other fact sheets on the site, I have always found them to be very helpful. Good Luck. http://www.bigdishsat.com/troubleshooting_2.php

 13.
Ty It is obvious you are finding this frustrating, what is it that you want to do? workwise I mean. You can register as "Petit Travaux de Batiment" which covers every trade.
No, that's just it, I don't want to do all of that sort of work, all I want is to get by and live a simple life, it was just that I felt that you were pointing a finger at people like me, if I am wrong then I apologise...just that not all of us that are doing a bit of this or that are ripping people off, we work, we pay our dues, we do a good job. It is possible that people moving to France will get the idea from your original post that anyone English in an old car/van is out to rip them off and that's not always the case, I do agree with other posters that over time you do find that your opinion of certain people who you may have thought of as genuine turn out NOT to be so. It is a mistake thats lots of us who move to France or have holiday homes make, we assume that because someone speaks English that they must be OK and will be our friend, STOP and ask yourself, "if I was back in the UK would I want to be friends with this person?" and when it comes to employing people then the same "Would I want this person to work on my house?" Of course I may be totally wrong......[:)]
 14. Rather than wipe out ALL of your cookies you can go here www.ccleaner.com and D/L the free utility, it will allow you to easily select the cookies you want and the ones you don't want, has other useful abilities too, comes without spyware too. I have always thought that it would be possible for malicious software to somehow 'harvest' the cookies on youe PC and then use them to access/log in to sites as you..possible? That's why it is very important to keep ahead of the game with Antivirus and Firewall protection especially if you are on a high Speed connection....n'est pas?[:)]
 15. Just when I was going next door for a BBQ too.......throw another A***hole on the BBQ....that'll be Tony Blair then.........OK Dick.....I'll get my coat[:)]
 16. As I said at the time I did my Stage in Cahor there was no way of registering as a Bricoloeur or Handyman although midway through the course a french gut who had stated at the beginning introductions that he was a 'plombier' becane a....'bricoloeur' and even described himself as doing 'a bit of this and a bit of that' which did make all the others titter but did not result in him being thrown out on his ear, Ty, I really don't know if my registration is correct and I have the idea that no-one French or English has any real idea, if by doing what I do is wrong then I am sorry but, I have registered, I pay my dues, I do my work and hopefully don't step outside of my authorised work...mind you the thought of even €20.00 an hour sounds pretty good.....oh and I do not run an old saloon car but I do use a bricomower but that belongs to my patron.
 17. Actually Ron Thursday 25th May was ascension and most of the service industries (around here anyway) took the Friday as a bridging day to make along W/E..[:)] So double trouble getting parts out to the garage in time.
 18. Need to get you all together for a Forum Concert maybe...? Wish that I had learnt to play...I'd give my right arm to be able to pick at a guitar.....[:D]
 19.
Hello,  I have noticed something this year that was missing or unnoticed during my first two years of working here. The number of Brits registering for 'Property services'... What is this exactly? What is this 'trade' that few French register as  but seems solely to be the reserve of  the Brits here...? They are involved in everything! Every metier from renovation to gardening. Turning gites around and fingering every pie proffered. I am thinking that I should re-register as this as I have more than gardening to my bow and speak reasonable French which is an aptitude that few seem to possess judging by the publicity solely printed in English dotted around the Point Verts and Boulangeries... Just what are the limits to this 'Property services'... What is the official remit of this trade...? Is it a commerce, metier or some other thing...? Answers please! P.S... They undercut my price heavily but I can't figure out how they do this and yet pay the social charges....
When I first registered it was as a carpenter, I actually wanted to register as an 'odd job man' or bricoleur but was told as this was not a recognised trade then i would have to choose a trade, I had none but had worked for several years for Property maintenance companies in the London Area mainly repairing/replacing sash windows on old housing stock, so armed with my references I registered as a carpenter...I thought I would make a living building book cases, fitting shelves, small works, as time went by my work changed and I found that I was doing more 'Guardian d'Maison type of work, Gardening, Maintenance etc, so last year I changed my registration, tried to find out what I should be registered as and with whom I should be registered, Chambre d'Metiers or Chambre d'Commerce, at the Chambre d'Metiers in Cahors after explaining how my work had changed I was advised to register as 'Espace Verte' and so I did and it cost me... I am allowed to do Gardening, Small Works and strangely 'ornamental gardens' but NO Electrical, Heating or Plumbing, I mainly have just one 'Patron' that keeps me in work all year round and I also do a holiday changeover, I probably charge less for my Gardening than Ty but then it's my guess that he is much more of a 'gardener' than me. I struggle to pay my cotizations especially with the added complication of changing registration midway through the year, but I am content and I do not seek more work, I don't advertise anywhere and I give a very good service to my client. I hope that Ty's comments are not aimed at someone like me? If you care to look up my registration you are welcome (David Goodwin, DEGAGNAC), I am still shown as a carpenter though as the wheels grind very slowly ansd I am still owed money from overpaid cotizations to one group when I am now paying cotizations to another group...still I smile and am happy to be living in the peace and tranquility of France...far from the madding crowd, sorry if this does not make a lot of sense..it does to me[:)]
 20.
The young drink, fall downa and vomit. It's alaways been the same. All a part of growing up. Same with trying drugs. Take a chill pill old folk. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID.
Yeah...did all that, the difference was I was 15/16 at the time not mid/late 20's, by the time I was 17 I was in the Army not banging a gong here), still can manage to get drunk and fall down but I don't look for the nearest person to beat senseless, "get a life" I have had a life, and still do, I know young people reaching their 30's who have never been futher than their local pub/club or Southend Costa...[:D]
 21.
K3 - they are SLIVERS of garlic! Slither is a verb much loved by snakes... I know what your mother told you about always pronouncing t-h as 'th' not 'v' but it's OK! (Sorry, you just trod on one of my pet bees).
When I was at primary school I was always made to stand on a desk and recite "Thirty Thousand Thrushes Sitting in a Thorn Bush" had to do it over and over until I stopped saying " firty fahsand frushes sittin in a forn bush"   Your Dad wasn't a teacher in Sidcup, Kent was he Dick?[:)]
 22. Cat46...yes, that's the one. We were sitting oustide there one evening last summer and a young lad stepped into the slip road (looking a bit unsteady) to wave farewell to some girls, at that moment a car turned into the slip road and tooted him, we thought "oh dear" but the young guy just turned and waved happily and stepped back onto the pavement...miracle. but as has been said things are obviously changing, seem to be seeing more of the uniform baseball and baggies 'uniform' around town so 'the times, they are a changing'[:)]
 23. We must do something about these 'elderly newcomers' speaking badly in French and waving their hands around and holding up the q whilst living their dream....perhaps we should ban them from France altogether? Living the dream seems to be the choice only of fluent young people perhaps and anyone old and inadequate in the French Language department should be stopped at the border and turned back.......really! And you think that in the UK they would make 'them' learn English before letting them work behind the P.O. counter, whatever next?[:P]
 24. They have been appearing  on the shelves in the supermarkets for some time now but I think Val2 is right, there isn't the money around for real binges....yet. And here in the biggest town around (Gourdon) there are as yet no bars directed specifically at the youngsters, the only bar that does attract the young still has a large number of young lads and girls just having a coffee late at night, can get a bit more lively around the end of June for the Fete de la St Jean, when the whole town is ringed by a large fun fair, but still a family affair.[:)]
 25. Hi Matt, sorry can't comment on the Chauffe Eau price but on the smells maybe, I guess you have checked for obvious breaks in pipework in the barn section? We had lot's of smells in the beginning and finally found out that when someone used the shower the waste water as it went past the connection where the bath waste came in created a vacuum that sucked the small amount of water in the bath trap out so that afterwards there was nothing to stop the smell of the fosse backing up into the bathroom, we eventually solved it by getting some anti syphon waste valves, had to get them from the UK but they may be available here now, these are they: www.plumbworld.co.uk/442-0000 Also have you got a vent pipe just before the fosse? if you have and it is inside the barn then you may want to look at this as a possible solution: www.humm-busters.com Haven't tried the Humm Buster yet but intend to as our vent pipe is outside and we do occasionally get a whiff from it, lot's of people will have absolutely no smells from their Fosse but our French neighbours says "c'est normale" good luck Dave[:)]
