  1. GG our south of England weather seems to be changing from day to day this last week. Christmas period very cold and snow and ice in Midlands and North. N.Y. eve cold and dry, N.Y. day dull drizzle and grey, Friday fabulous blue skies and sunshine, yesterday drizzle, rain, cold and miserable, today plus 2 degrees and grey. Still it is January and for many anything has to be better than the floods of last year.
  2. vivienz Ages a go I sent you a second PM but I am not sure whether it reached you. Anyway I too wish you lots of happiness in your new French home.
  3. New Documentary http://caminodocumentary.org/ Title: Walking The Camino Six Ways
  4. Yonner CONGRATULATIONS from me as well. Yes the Spanish Albergues are cheap and mainly plentiful. In France in the Basque country there were some auberges where we stayed but until we reached St Jean Pied de Port there was not the plentiful supply (if any) of budget accommodation that you find in Spain. From Saint Palais to Ostabat and then on to St Jean was a beautiful walk. Yes Idun I have watched The Way a few times and I think it has inspired many people to give the Camino a try. There's a new DVD out I'll look for the name and post it on here.
  5. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/man-held-cannes-two-loaded-shotguns-134440796.html Another incident in Cannes! By the way is Hollande on his holidays or is this an official visit?
  6. Oh dear, you really can't tar all children within one country with the same brush, whichever side of the channel you're on! In Lidl today, (in Surrey and not anywhere near St George's Hill) a nice young girl was looking for a certain product. I directed her to the frozen food section and she thanked me. Then I found the product before she did , I showed her again and she thanked me very politely. Yes all of this in Lidl.[:)] Re. the French children shop lifting on visits to U.K., I heard of a school trip to Yorkshire where the French school children were mostly children of prison staff. They apparently were the worst of the lot for being light fingered in the local shops.[;-)]
  7. Those surgical stockings also come in dark green, very seasonal! Be aware that they tend to have a hole on the sole section so the presents might fall out.![;-)]
  8. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/france-pay-60-mn-us-nazi-rail-deportations-201615311.html#TeUITos Please can someone correct the link above.
  9. You can boil it and mash with potatoes or add it to a soup or casserole dish. I adore celeriac grated with a dressing of mayonnaise and and little oil.
  10. Friends once stayed in a small hotel where there was a notice saying keys should be left at the desk when they left the hotel. They did this, went out for dinner and returned quite late only to find the hotel all locked up and there was no way they could the gain access. They ended up paying for a night in a more expensive place. Next day they were told about the 10p.m. curfew no refund was made and I think the leaving of keys notice was aimed at those checking out of the hotel.
  11. oh Betty, there's always the exception to the rule![blink] isn't there?[8-)]
  12. I've noticed in France and Spain that visiting circuses tether their animals in the local supermarket car parks. Llamas, goats etc are just tethered and the more dangerous animals are in their cages.
  13. I had to cut and paste Idun's link then it worked. This week I bought a great little book in a charity shop "Dictionary of French Slang and Colloquial Expressions, which is both very explicit[:$] and educational![:)]
  14. "As a second home owner, I've been paying my tax d'hab etc. for many years. It entitles me to rock all. " So true YCCMB! However when I needed to complain about something to the Maire and said to a French friend that I was wary of doing this as we are second home owners and not French, his reply was that we do pay taxes and therefore we are entitled to complain / have our say, just like anyone else in the village.
  15.  I had the very same thought Gardengirl[:)]
  16. Sue I love the idea of the ex SDF cat being taken on a foreign holiday for Crimble! LOL Pure magic[:)] This story has the makings of a good film for Christmas[:)]
  17. "I was hoping that by still paying tax habitation and foncier there may be some sort of health cover available. I will ask." If you change your status to résidence secondaire owner and are no longer registered as a permanent resident then I don't think there would any chance of health cover from France.
  18. I claimed mine before the July 2014 deadline and it was easy. That was then! Reading the new regulations I am wondering how on earth holidaymakers can supply French bank details when in this case they are not resident in France and don't have a French bank account. Or perhaps I read it too quickly and they can supply U.K. (or other E.U.) bank details.[8-)]
  19. rutabaga - I think this was part of the staple wartime diet in France.
