1. Why on earth would you need to scan at 9400 dpi? I think what you need to do is decide what you want to do with the scans. If you just want to view them on a TV/monitor then there is absolutely no need for that kind of resolution.
 2. I'd be inclined to give them a tenner to take it away!
 3. We too have received a bill for the first time this year. I presumed it is related to Gite income but the sum the three taxes (8.2%, 0.5% and 3.4%) are based on does not bear any relation to our actual income. How on earth is this calculated and should we even be paying it?
 4.
Well silly billy me for taking in a single word of what FT/Orange said.
Well suddenly Teleconnect doesn't seem so bad after all. I am with TC and have been for over a year without any major problems. My neighbour and I have had problems with our phone lines for several months and it was only when TC took over my line payment from FT that we actually got someone out to fix it. Thank you Teleconnect.
 5.
Now realize where I got the 4 years from , it is the inspection period ...........another expense you have to allow for.
We had a recent inspection and were told the fosse must be emptied every 4 years (maximum). The inspector said that when she came for her next visit she wanted to see a receipt from a registered contractor. We were also told the price at the moment was in the region of 140€ (for a 3000li fosse), ours is 5000li so I expect we will pay a little more.
 6.
Enjoy the blip while it lasts.[:)] King will be speaking tonight, BOE minutes tomorrow... [geek]
King always looks so down – a bit like those dogs with the droopy sad eyes, no wonder everyone wants to sell sterling. Why is it he comes out with his depressing statements just before they calculate my end of month pension? Do you think he knows when I get paid and does it on purpose?
 7.
From what I am reading in various papers, the assessments are now done by private agencies who receive a bonus for each person found not to be unable to work.
They don't make a human decision. It's all done with a computer program called Lima. They simply type in the answers provided on the form completed by the claimant and the computer makes a decision. The company who are doing this are on an £800 million contract, with a £250 bonus for every claimant they remove from Incapaicity Benefit. So, they will say almost all claimants are fit for work just to get the bonus, even though many of the people will only be able to work (or seek work) for a few weeks before having to claim benefits again because they genuinely are not fit for work.
 8.
So if we assume that of the 500,000 Brits living in France 200,000 are on E forms then the UK pays out  £720,000,000 and that would continue if the UK pulls out of Europe, really! We're doomed, doomed ah tell ye!.....................JR
Drop in the ocean - MP's spend more than that decorating their houses.
 9. You will definitely need a Sky card if you want to watch Stargate Universe this Tuesday on Sky 1. Don't miss it - excellent new series!!
 10.
I would call the pompiers round get them to spray in the hole they are coming out of and then block it over for the time being, Maybe some expanding foam or something would block up the hole. They did not charge us as its all part of the service even though we were told we would be charged on the phone. Go on give them a phone they will sort it for you.
Don't be too quick to write off the bill. Friends of ours had exactly the same problem/solution. It was 12 months before they got the bill and it was in the region of 150€
 11.

As I mentioned in the other thread - the concept of owning your own home amongst the kids I went to school with was rare.  The concept of a second home was for the mega rich.  My grandparents lived in rented accommodation - as did many post war families.  We have become more and more greedy, demanding and materialistic. The whingers on this thread being a great example of those who have, perhaps, forgotten what we have now.
I was 13 years old before I realised that some people (although none of the 2000 pupils at my school) lived in anything other than a council house, the son of my mums boss had to explain to me what a private house was after asking me "have you always lived in a council house"
We had to save for three month for the 3d to get into the pictures and that was for the front row, the rich kids sat at the back. Afterwards it was off to the fishshop to beg for the scraps which we ate on our way back to the rented hovel. Now we are just like you lot. Shutter up the mansion, drive to the airport in our new 4x4 and fly off to the UK for a tenner. It's a good life. Thank you Ryanair.
 12.
How does this advice given to American drivers sit with you?.............JR http://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Annoying-Other-Drivers
Oh I just love this one: If you inadvertently cause a situation that annoys other drivers, and they honk the horn or indicate their displeasure in some other way, do not gesture wildly, honk your own horn or jam the brakes. Accept your short-lived punishment, indicate to the other driver that you are sorry for your infraction, and move on.
 13.
I do not get intimidated by tailgaters, my speed remians the same. However, I can understand that some might and speed up. What concerns me is if something runs in to the road, whether a child or an animal, the natural instinct is to brake. Unfortunately, the person behind will not stop in time and hence a collision with the rear of my car which could result in injury. Still, I presume Jay that you think that is OK. Paul
Why would you assume I would consider that OK? You write the most illogical drivel I have ever seen!
 14.
.................. the ECB will soon be compelled to take significant corrective action. I did forecast that the £ : € would in all probability settle at around £= €1.45 by July and have not changed that view.
Come on Gluestick, give us another one of your forecasts we need cheering up.
 15.
I try to keep to the speed limit - it might occasionally creep 1 or 2 mph above. However, I am sick and tired of other drivers who are right on my bumper trying to push me faster, i.e. exceed the speed limit. Others tooting etc. I also find it interesting that people feel it is OK to break the law for certain things. How do they feel about the person who has burgled their home - he is of the same mind 'OK to break the law for certain things'. In his case breaking in to your home and stealing your possessions. Paul
Hardly in the same league. Sounds like you advocate similar punishment for tailgaters as you would for burglars.
 16.
They can get it right when they try. I have to say that throughout all the troubles when I have spoken to tech support they have been knowledgeable and helpful, the problems seem to be managerial and systemic not on the shop floor - but then what's new there ? Did you report problem Jay or did they call you first I wonder. For the future if your line is still with FT then you can get direct and prompt support from them by reporting it on 1013.fr.
As I said in my earlier posts I have had very few problems, except for minor glitches just after the "changeover". I have had very little contact with their technical help line, I didn't report a problem and their phone call to me was a surprise.
 17. Teleconnect rang me today to say they had found a problem with my line. They had checked it and found the noise level to be double what it should be. After several questions regarding the internal wiring of our phone sockets they said they were going to have FT investigate the problem. Now that is what I call service!
 18. pends
That's very strange - never asked me for another 20 quid.........
Depends how old your card is.
 19.

Confusing in what sense?? I found it quite straight forward - enter you card number and an address for them to send you a new one to and it's done. Nothing to pay. No room for confusion........
It would be helpful to know what web address you used........thank you.
https://mysky.sky.com/replacecard/get-a-card
 20.
How's this for a saving? http://www.amazon.fr/gp/browse.html/ref=pe_28971_16777401_pe_33Q3/?node=248401031
Last time we were in the UK we bought a load of those bulbs (bayonet fitting 7watt) at 19p for two, beat that!
 21.
I have just caught up with this thread. I have had my French plated RHD car keyed twice , both times I know who did it!
Life being what it is, one dreams of revenge. Revenge is always the weak pleasure of a little and narrow mind.(Source: Satires (XIII, 189)) No one rejoices more in revenge than woman.(Source: Satires (XIII, 191))
 22.
.......if you have to ask a question you should not be doing the job........
Rubbish, how does anyone learn how to do anything in that case?
 23.

I don't think Teleconnect is cheap at all. We pay the usual 30 euros and then another 5 for unlimited calls to some English speaking countries and have to fork out another 16 (?) to keep on our line rental with FT.  As far as I can see if you go with Free than for your 30 euros you get all this plus calls within France plus calls to most countries of the world. It's a while since I looked at Free. Is this still the case?
Yes. For most people who can get adsl, it is possible to stop paying for the FT line with Free (and others - Alice and SFR also do this for the same price). This may not be available though on lines that are very far from the exchange, capable of only the slowest ADSL. But don't forget that if you stop paying for the FT line, you are completely dependent on calls through the modem and if there is an ADSL problem or defective modem, you will have no telephone service at all unless you have a mobile. It is not cheap to call the helpline at Free either. Danny
Frankly for EMERGENCY use it would seem to me that the € 3/mois mobile activation fee Chez E Leclerc is a better deal than € 16/mois to France Télécom.
It is NOT a better deal at all, take my word for it. I was with Tiscali then Alice for several years and gave up my FT line to save that 16€ a month. After 12 month something went wrong and I was 3 months with intermittant phone and 2 months with no phone at all, even calls to the Alice free helpline costs a fortune on a mobile. Danny is quite right, I would never recommend getting rid of your FT line.
