  1. parsnips I have no connection whatsoever with this request, however I have to say how astounded I am with the fullsome and detailed response to what is a difficult query. It is very heartening to know that I belong to a Forum that has a member with such depth of knowledge and capacity of enquiry.
  2. Thanks for all the replies, very interesting. The end result? Well, from going to a household of four to now just two OAP's I thought we could reduce the bill somewhat and either lower the temp or elso have it on every other day. However, the figure that AnOther quoted is totally manageable, and the scare of Legionaires disease now has me backtracking somewhat!
  3. Point taken, so how far down could I go with safety, however, thinking about it wouldn't the same thing apply if I only put it on every other day for example. What you are implying seems to be that the heater needs to be fairly high all the time! Please excuse my ignorance.
  4. Circumstances have changed and I now wish to turn down the chauffe eau to less heat. It is a De Dietrich 150litre about 5 years old. I have taken the cover off the bottom and could only find a longish black thing with a screwdriver slot in the end and a plus and minus sign either side. Is there other indication as to how it is possible to achieve a certain temperature other by trial and error. The long black thing clicks as it is turned so does that mean that it is gradiated in some way?
  5. Does this not rather depend on where you would like to receive the signal. I have a tablet, but there is no way the signal from the Livebox, 3 story's up, would reach when I am working in the cave. However, I have a Logitech Squeezebox which performs beautifully in that situation.
  6. I suppose I am typical of he of a certain age who finds it necessary to drag oneself into the present century. I use the computer quite a lot, I have a tablet and I even have a smartphone, although I find it very difficult to read the numbers and letters hence it is switched off most of the time and I certainly don't have a 3G contract!! However, its seems that there is pressure to get even further into the modern era by being harangued by No.1 son to get a Twitter and Facebook account. I even had to look at a BBC web site to see what these sites actually do, and there lays the problem. I can see no positive benefit of either apart from spending even more time in front of a screen getting messages from people who you thought had died years ago, or by reading what Stephen Fry had for breakfast! Am I missing something here or are they really the must have sites that will revolutionise my old age?
  7. I don't have one of these thingy's in the consumer unit, I just rely on having a dedicated electronic timer between the consumer unit and the chauffe eau. I presume this has the same effect, or am I missing a trick here?
  8. Thanks for that information Minnie, we too visit son in NZ each year and have been paying a really high price for travel insurance due to age!!!
  9. Thanks all and to confirm via le facteur a Demande de Raccordement is not required on replacement letter boxes.
  10. Site to purchase proprietry chenille traps: http://www.lamesangeverte.com/commande-ecopiege-contre-chenille-processionnaire-pin.html Video shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiffH6mq0BA#t=31
  11. My very ancient and very small letter box attached to the wall near the front door needs replacing as it couldn't hold even small packages, so I have now bought a big job 30x30x40 which I intend to fit into the garage door next to the front door. However, looking at the packaging on the new box it states that a "Demande de Raccordement" is needed by La Poste. Is this really necessary nowadays and indeed , do La Poste still insist on this.
  12. Thanks for the sugestions, feel a bit happier now.
  13. Please excuse my ignorance on the terms used here. I have a tableau with some space to fit another disjoncteur and would like to connect up a 16a prise to plug in a wi-fi extender. There are two barre de pontage, one for neutral and the other for positive to carry the current to the existing disjoncteurs. If I fit in another disjoncteur do I have to buy a complete barre to cover all the disjoncteurs or can I just tack a bit on to the existing by overlapping on the last one.
  14. As reported in the Connexion, has anyone any thoughts on this. Our own circumstances are of retired teacher and as such I read that because there is no other course of redress due to the Double Tax Treaty then we would not be subject to this proposal.........../but maybe I am wrong!
  15. Gardian Coming from that fair city I have to take issue with your description of Bristol......or, as the Bristolians very aptly would say "Bristle" !!!!![:)]
  16. Jay Yes, thanks, just spotted Audacity, seems good so will give that a try.
  17. I am putting most of my cd's onto an sd card to play on the car radio, however I have a particular cd that I must have recorded from vinyl in one continuous track!! Can anyone help in an idiots guide how to split the tracks up and then sync straight onto the sd card, or burn another cd and then sync.
  18. Wils Very odd this reception thingy, I am also in Herault, about 3/4 hour north of Montpellier. We have an 80cm dish and have never experienced any problems except when there is an orage  or very heavy rain, just as well or there may be complaints from you know who!!!!
  19. Anybody know if a rear fog light is mandatory on a car in France and if so must it be on the offside of the vehicle?
  20. Time will tell indeed! Perhaps I should start saving up now for when the 3 years are up!! But I still find it rather strange that you are allowed to have "dodgy" headlamps for 4 years and that the CT ought be part of the change over process to a French registration.
  21. AnOther Interesting, I have very recently brought a VW CC across to France and it has a facility on the Settings menu to change to "Travel mode" which incorporates the headlamps moving across to accommodate right hand driving. From what you have stated am I to think that when the time for the CT arrives, not for 3 years, that this will not conform with their requirements and I will have to get the headlamps changed?
  22. Quite agree, I was amazed at the amount of people who had not bothered, or who didn't know, to take photo copies and were shown where the machine was and then the whole process was put on hold until these applicants returned with the copies, it would have been a lot quicker if there had been someone to check initially that the applicant had everything.
  23. Dave Completely agree with you and your tip about the second ticket.
