1. Must do too many crosswords. If I'm right this is similarly unusual. If not I can't do it.
2. Our  "Super U"  (Gemozac) now do truck and van hire. Perhaps you could try them locally.
3.
She's an Able Seaman, and stop sniggering at the back!
Leading Seaman - spot the  "anchor" rank badge on her left arm
4. My dictionary says - "Chinese artichoke (similar to Jerusalem artichoke)"
5. Been here 6 1/2 years and have not yet been asked for a translation of anything - but we live in hope!!!  [:D]
6. For those who are interested and who struggle to read French here is a daily update on the election news. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/frenchelections2007
7. Most if not all agents will be happy to give you a valuation - in the hope that they will get the sale.
8. Last year I bought a magazine called "Impots tout pour payer". it is produced by VO magazine and cost €6 from presse/tabac. Jammed full of useful info with a step by step guide to filling in the form and with access to a website www.vo-impots.com
9. €3300 for purchase and installation of a Jotul 500 in February last year. €2000 for the burner and the balance for the kit and installation, which took a day. We had nothing to compare it with but thought that was a reasonable price at the time.
10. We installed a Waterair pool in 2003. No real problems and 5cm screed is plenty. Along with liner installation it was the only thing we had done profeesionally.  Rather than clog up the forum with queries of  limited interest if you have any others either Email or PM me and I will try to answer. I did get the instruction booklet supplied in English as well as French which was a help
11.
It's tendre de tranche. See here: découpe
Tendre de Tranche: Cette coupe se trouve dans la région femorale dans la face interne de la cuisse. Ella a comme limites, la Tranche Grasse, la Tranche Ronde et le Cœur de Rumsteak.

Thanks Clair - that's what I meant to write, that's what I thought I'd written. It's still a great roast!
12. I don't know which issue but there was a translated permis de construire and declaration de traveaux in the LF magazine last year.  I have recently given all my old copies away so cannot look it up, but perhaps admin may be able to help
13. It's tende de tranche and it's topside. It's the only joint we have found to be consistently good for roasting.
14.
It's arrived in the Charente-Maritime! 2 inches in the last 30 minutes and guess which idiots used the last of their wood yesterday?!!! Just lost our satellite, was so looking forward to the 2nd part of 'Five Days' the new 5 part BBC thriller. Tres typiquement.
When we arrived in autumn 2000 there had been no snow for years. Winter 2004 gave us a dusting and our neighbour said it was the first for 15 years. Another dusting in 2005 and then we shared Gunner's 2 inches last night. We still have wood and expect a top up on Friday. Satellite went down, as did most I suppose, and then we lost the electricity between about 2330 and 0130. The cat went out very briefly and then decided that outside was definitely not her thing. Very quiet out this morning. Not a tire track or footprint on the road as yet.
15. When we did ours - a few years ago now - we got the guy who dug the whole to pile the spoil in an arc round one of the long sides of the pool.  He did a brilliant job, separating out the topsoil as it was removed and then finally putting the topsoil on the new bank. We have now planted up this bank and it provides some scenery and privacy and also a pretty efficient windbreak.
16.
Robin's dead right - Mayenne is lovely, and there are loads of Mayenners (?) on this forum who will tell you so!
Wouldn't they be the Mayennaise? Good luck in finding your roofer. Fortunately our roof was fine, but we have been plodding along with the rest of it, and enjoying it most of the time, for six years now.  I don't think it will ever be truly finished.
17. This article is in the Telegraph this morning and may be of interest http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/12/29/ndriving29.xml
18. Ours turned up in the garden in February 5 years ago looking like a bag of bones wrapped in an old bit of fur. She appeared to be domesticated and had had kittens but was very timid. Although she would eat outside she would not come in for a long time, preferring to live in a pile of rubble in an adjacent builders yard.  As she became less timid and after another litter of kittens, which disappeared, she started to venture inside for food. We put her on the pill and once it became obvious that we were acceptable and that she was staying we took her to the vet to be spayed and chipped. She now rules the roost and we are fully accredited members of her staff!
19. Ours have expired but as they are more convenient than a passport we still carry them and they have so far been accepted as means of identification for cheque writing etc.
20. Don't send, don't like - too impersonal. Would much rather send and receive individual, personal letters.
21. Notts County/Nottm Forest, because back in 1945 my dad would take me to see whichever was playing at home. Portsmouth, because the queen virtually made Portsmouth my home town for about 34 years. Will be watching Salisbury/Forest this afternoon
22. We picked up this recipe, posted by Teamed Up, on the forum about 5 years ago and have used it ever since - as have a lot of our friends. It makes a very nice pastry but I am not the mince pie maker merely the messenger, so am not looking to get shot!   Pre heat oven to 200 deg C. 6 ozs SR flour 3ozs softened butter 250gram tub of marscopone cheese cut straight across and use half. Pinch of salt For those who can, rub in the butter then mix in the marscopone and keep working it until it looks like a ball of pastry. For those who can't, stick the lot in the food processor put it on slow first and then work up to fast until it is all mixed together. Make sure there is plenty of flour on your board and roll out to about 1/8 inch thick.
23. Currently using AOL9 which "went down" yesterday on one PC using Windows98. The laptop using XP was fine. I tried a bit of self help without success so phoned the English speaking helpline. Got a reply second try and the guy explained that a server had been down and caused some problems. He then took me through a repair procedure. It took about 20 minutes in total and all is now well. [:D]
24. Just come back from a holiday in USA. We hired from Hertz, via Ebookers prepaid voucher, having compared lots of other prices. It was a full size (ford taurus) with 380 miles on the clock when we picked it up in LA, We had the car for 31days and drove 4500 miles. The cost including a one way drop of fee of €290, in Norfolk Virginia, was €1620. We were impressed with both the price and the service and based on our experience would certainly use them again.
