  1. Hopefully may be going to Murcia in Spain end of August for a big party. Can anyone who's done it recommend a good route (quickest, probably) from Sauze-Vaussais/Ruffec area (RN10) down to Murcia, please? Many thanks [:D]
  2. [quote user="catalpa"]In France, I believe the licence covers the receiving equipment, not the programs. Go figure![:P][/quote] To whom were you replying? If what you say is correct, by what authority does the BBC demand a license fee from French residents? [;-)]
  3. Dell Dimension 3000 with three primary partitions taken up by Dell and XP (standard install). Linux (SimplyMEPIS) is installed on an extended partition with more logical partitions formatted ext3. No probs. I have a brilliant old scanner which will only work under Win ME at the latest, so I deleted the three XP partitions and made two primaries instead, the first for ME (FAT32), and the second for XP (NTFS) as a dual boot - I'm typing this in Linux, by the way. Now, the Win ME bootable CD won't boot, but the XP one will. But, the ME CD will boot in other computers... BIOS is set up correctly to boot from the CD. If I use a Win ME floppy to boot and select the CD, Scandisk naturally runs and unintelligible errors crop up. FDISK shows the C:\ drive in ASCII format and again is unintelligible. If I select F12 on boot (for options), no matter what option  I select, I get the Linux grub loader. Why won't the CD boot as instructed? Getting frustrated! [:'(]
  4. When you say, And to conform with our French vehicles, are you saying then that the wiring is different? And have you got the Google link? Cheers [:D]
  5. [quote user="Opas"]No they should work together ... Hope this helps. [/quote] I'm sure it will. Many thanks. [:D]
  6. Trailer bought in England and fitted with standard electrics for rear lights etc. French car with towbar and electrics, but trailer electrics now don't work (same plug and socket). Are French towbar electrics wired differently par hasard?
  7. There is some code which will allow html code to be rendered as a normal text string - in CSS it's <pre>normal code here</pre> - but I haven't found what it is on this site yet. Then we could have posted the [img] code in the proper square brackets. Mods?
  8. For example, if you can put a suitably edited image on a web site i.e. edited for size, not straight off a camera! - you just need this in the body of your post: (img)http://www.thunderhorse.flyer.co.uk/images/jack.jpg(/img) and you'll get this: [img]http://www.thunderhorse.flyer.co.uk/images/jack.jpg[/img] Note though that the img open and close tags need to be SQUARE brackets, not shown here because if they were you'd see another picture... Hope that helps as well.
  9. Hi! You're saying that you searched your XP partition and couldn't find AVG? Tres bizarre! Look on the AVG site again and you'll get the name of the executable you (theoretically) downloaded. Right click on the link and it should ask you where you want to save it. The default is where it probably is. If not, you'll have to bite the bullet... I always default to the desktop where I can see it. Worth persevering because AVG is very good. As for Eudora, can't speak for it, but no end of people I know use Thunderbird for email (or Kmail in Linux). And on the subject of alternatives, why not dump IE and give Firefox a go? Built in download managers, the lot. Take control of your browser, and your mail. [:D]
  10. [quote user="fulcrum"][quote user="thunderhorse"]Yes there are download limits with some ISPs. I'm with Wanadoo with a 1Mb contract, and that gives me a monthly download limit (from 1st of each month) of 5Gb - 5 Gigabytes. That's a helluva lot - unless you're downloading whole CDs, for example! Even as a heavy internet browser, 5Gb should be ample. Hope that helps. [/quote] I am on the same type of contract with Wanadoo and when I took it out it mentioned in the terms and conditions that there was a 5gigabytes monthly limit. However if you read the terms and conditions now you will find that the 5go stipulation has disappeared.[/quote] When did you take out your contract? If I go here: <url>http://www.orange.fr/bin/frame.cgi?service=wanadoo_et_moi&u=http://compte.wanadoo.fr/wanadoo_et_moi/compte/bin/compte.cgi</url> I find that my consummation is still being recorded...

  12. aj-dr - I didn't fully understand your question, but are you wanting to e.g. get Wanadoo email past ISPs like AOL and NTL? Or indeed use an email a/d of another ISP through your current ISP? If so alter smtp on your outgoing to smtp-msa and use port 587. As I say, don't know if that's what you're looking for... [:D]
  13. I've had new wood-framed windows installed, relaid two bedroom floors with thick pine planks, and friends have scrubbed their old floor boards. In each case micro-porous lasure has brought out the grain, given a lovely finish, and turned out to be very hard wearing on the floors. I'd recommend it as an option. [8-|]
  14. FWIW, wood looks so much nicer. When we had a new bathroom window put in, the mason brought an old oak gatepost and slotted that in for a lintel. Cleaned up and lasured, it looks beautiful. But you could always use concrete... [:P]
  15. Many thanks: that is encouraging. Just by way of an aside in relation to the (French) insurance, I wrote to them and told them what had happened (collided with a cerf,) and days later there was a refund in the bank. No probs. [:D]
  16. One or two English mechanics have said that I'll have extreme difficulty scapping a petrol-engined car in France (diesel culture), and that most Brits they know tuck them away in a barn. Before I waste any time hunting for a scrapyard, has anyone else heard of this? It does seem a bit bizarre. [B]
  17. [quote user="Kristine"]I live in Spain, though we did live in France for several years before. We regularlytravel between the countries visiting friends and although you should have the full passport ,we have never been stopped,( who would stop you ,and where ? ) so long as you take the vacination book with you I don't see a problem, .There are a lot of ticks in southern Spain ,so it's only common sense to treat the dogs as you proberbly do now.[/quote] Our French neighbours work in Madrid and are of the same opinion - they travel with two dogs regularly... But I suppose it's the same old story, if anything goes wrong... [:(]
  18. [quote user="Charlotte3"]Sorry, should have said deflectors......damn wine again. Sunday Driver, in my humble opinion 300 plus euros is not a few quid, the car itself is'nt worth much more than that. By the way, I don't use it at night or in very bad weather, I may be poor but I'm not stupid. Aly [/quote] Unbelievably naive statements. I suppose you drive on bald tyres because you never drive in the rain. And you can always foresee the weather that it'll never be bad and you'll never be caught out? And if you don't drive at night, why have lights at all? Get real. [:@]
  19. Speaking from (limited) experience, and knowing what several friends have done, if you want a cheap workhorse, get one from a local garage/dealer. They'll look after you, sort the paperwork (minimal), be open to offers, and have a local reputation to maintain. A guy I know (not short of a bob or two) bought an old diesel van for 300€ from a local dealer. Four years later it's still running and has hardly cost him a sou. Another friend has just bought a 300€ diesel Transit off another Brit. If it only lasts the year, it's damned cheap motoring if you just want a cheap workhorse. Then you won't mind the odd bash and scape, windows open in the rain, flaky paint, pulling the guts out of it dragging a trailer ... Depends what you're looking for. [:)]
  20. [quote user="Christine Animal"] ... by the way, Thunderhorse, are your chips now registered here at your present address? [/quote] Gambling chips? Fish 'n' chips? Crisps? Ah, those chips. Oui. As soon as we got here. Straight to the vet. [;-)]
  21. Our two dogs came to France on a one-way ticket i.e. not on the Pet Passport scheme: microchipped and certified healthy. As we have the opportunity to go to Spain visiting, do France and Spain have the same sort of schemes?
  22. [quote user="Leslauriers"]... but I could not get used to the seats - almost at the point of being unable to walk through back pain I sold it after 6 months... [/quote] The one I'm picking up has fully adjustable lumbar support. Is this a feautre only of the more recent Xantias? Plus the whole seat jacks up and down, tilts, and reclines. Hopefully at 6'2" I'll get a comfy position...[:)]
  23. There's a firm in Staffordshire - can't remember the name - well known for dealing with quality LHD cars and taking your RHDs part-ex. May save a lot of aggro, then re-register when you get over here. Someone here will know the firm, if not, I'm sure Googling will turn them up. Hope that helps a little. [:D] PS - as for nightmare paperwork - yes, it can be, but deal with a garage that will handle it all for you. Apart from standing costs of re-registering one of ours, the garage only charged €30 for doing the business.
  24. Likely the Road Vehicles (Lighting) Regs have changed, but it used to be that unless the towing vehicle's lights and reflectors can be seen, then the trailor must be fitted with same. European harmonisation may well dictate the same in France - it's logical anyway. From what you describe, it's likely to be under the weight where it requires its own registration mark. Someone here will have up-to-date info. [:)]
