  1. The reason Tunisia banned it is because it is nothing to so with religion! My friends have told me Islam merely says that you should be respectful - the same in a Christian church where women cover their heads, not their features. It is the old story (sorry not a feminist) whereby the religion in question has its rules created often by men - who I often say are more than jobsworths and would do everything they can to make sure they are powerful. There is nothing about women being subjugated - in fact they should be revered as a giver of life! See an earlier post!
  2. Sounds remarkably like the same package being put forward in the Uk, whereby citizens may be made to stump up £20,000! when retiring to pay for future care!!! Ok, all of you with a spare 20K in your pocket when you retire, please alert D.Cameron at 10 Dow........
  3. Mind you I liked the article about the beer served in stuffed animals on the same page! Weird or what?
  4. You actually need two cards - one in France and one for the Uk. I use the CA one travelling in France and the NW in the UK. Simply make sure there is enough money in both for whatever you need. Solves the problem maybe?
  5. Looks like another country trying to stuff the motorist then?
  6. Just to say we had a reply & conversation today from Peugeot - they started charging apparently about a year or so ago, before that it was free. Asked why they do not provide a C of C automatically, they said they do but you must pay for it. I asked why a french made car imported into the uk and then being re-imported back to France needed a c of c - they said ask the French Licensing authorities. I asked does this mean they know that Peugeots made for other European markets might not be made to the same high standard as those for the French market? SILENCE - then, I' sure that's not the case. So, I asked, why then not provide the C of C free - ours was not in the Service Booklet as we were led to believe it should be. They said it is never provided unless asked for - all Peugeots have them but you have to ask for them and they will then charge you £100 for the photocopied piece of paper. Any one from Top Gear here??? This is just a Rip off!
  7. Just to say I have found some of the 2000 ans d'histoire very informative. I especially love the music - it must be a requiem of some sort, am trying to find out what it is. So far have laughed with 'Les Gaullois', enjoyed 'Anne et Mazarin', and found 'Darwin' good - they even used a bit of the BBC series!
  8. Yeh, understood, but for those larger projects where you need more cash......
  9. The only problem I've had is with my Asterix program from Eurotalk, yeh, ok, it's a 1995 version, but is has worked throughout the years, but Windows 7 has stymied it. Eurotalk can't help 'cos they don't have the licence anymore. Pity 'cos it's a good French language program - learning French through a comic book format.
  10. If you are transferring money to a French bank using a Nationwide account - to save even more money, make sure you do it in euros, not pounds. You get a good rate, plus the charge is only £20 with no charge from the french bank for receiving the cash. In pounds, it's still £20 plus a charge at the French end for receiving it and I belerive a charge at the Uk end for transferring!
  11. Hi, just to add - I found the problem was me running my mouse etc., over the right hand bottom corner and clicking accidently where the magnifier pic is - I kept puzzling over it and discovered it was actually me, not realising how sensitive the system is. Windows 7 great though!
  12. Will - and others - just a thought, you are quoting retiring ages as the date when you becom retired as 60 for women and 65 for men - however, the rules have changed for many - for example a woman of 56 retiring to France now, has to fund or have coverage including E106 for 5 years and then normally you would be in the retired section, but for many women this changes for those born from 1950 to 1955 - those women are on an increasing retirement age scale of 61 to 65. This means surely that medical and social charges will be increasing year upon year for those in that bracket - so now 56 means you get your E121 retirement at 64 (born 1954) etc. This means you must allow for extra social payments and tax for those extra years!
  13. Have you tried Sterling for delivery to France? I know a few people are having stuff delivered now from IKEA in the UK - and some of them are French! Apparently they have delivered a complete 3 piece suite or something - IKEA deliver to Sterling and Sterling take it from there. They charge a percentage for delivery to one of their pick up points. Sometimes worth the hassle for certain items.
  14. Thank you for all your help - all sussed I think now - listen to Mazarin & Anne of Austria last night! All I have to do now is try and understand it all. Thanks again.
  15. yeh, thanks for all that - sussed now - didn't have a itunes programme on the computer - obviously Windows Media Player will not synch with Apple! so now trying to figure how to download to the player from the computer - it's set up for WMP, but cannot see the synch button on the itunes! - still gives me a break from French!!!! Thanks everyone
  16. thanks for your help though - will try another route
  17. Hi, I clicked on the 'abonner' and got the smaller window, then when I clicked on the itunes section it shows -cannot find window- information - what am I doing wrong?
  18. Thanks for that DerekJ - I picked up the 2000 years of history, but when I tried to subscibe to the itunes it came back as not being able to find the page - any ideas?
  19. I am at present working on the OU L120 Course Intermediate French, which is good, but I am still having problems listening/speaking - not the basics but trying to 'tune into' spoken French. Can anyone help me with somnething that I can download onto MP3 to listen to in my home time? Thanks.
  20. Where are you - I'm due over sometime in summer, have been quilting for aeons, ran a shop as well = can I help? Keni
  21. Bugsy - he V5C does have a section for Type Approval that begins with an 'e', so we might try going along that route and see what happens. Thanks to everyone for the info though.
  22. Yes, AnOther, had a look at that thread - but I am looking to change the headlights on my car - the thread seems to concern itself with dazzling oncoming drivers - what I am loooking to is the CoC -for another European country. If the lights are wrong in the UK for the beam, they fail the MOT, the same should go in France. However, Peugeot are charging their customers large amounts of money to provide them with a piece of paper that says what we all know - namely the car is fit for use in France - another European country. Simply by charging/not providing the CoC at the time of purchase they are surely contravening the single market rules? The French side is equally wrong by ignoring the information from the DVLA V5C by demanding the CoC? Don't all get hot about this though, mine is simply an enquiry, I am not looking to start another war.
  23. Cheers Bugsy - just one thought though, before you mentioned about one Coc begin issued FOC others being charged for - does that mean that if yuo never had one you can get one free - can't find one in the service booklet - 2005 model vehicle - just a warranty for 2/3 years Thanks though.
  24. Ok, this is going to sound REALLY stupid but... if the Uk is part of Europe..and.. France is part of Europe..and.. theoretically we are all therefore working together for a single market..... why do we need CoCs etc? Or are vehicles made for the Uk market slightly inferior so that manufacturers need to prove to other countries their vehicles are safe for their roads? Peugeot are asking £100 for a 2005 Combi Partner - which everyone drives in France anyway, so I think that is excessive for producing a bit of paper to say the car's alright to drive in France - or am I missing something?
