1. 4x4 enthusiasts will no doubt clarify this for you, but I believe the recent press coverage referred to the possibility of increasing taxes on new vehicles when they are purchased, that said, there appears to be a growing resentment to these vehicles in both London and Paris so the return of road tax in France for 4x4,s cannot be ruled out for the future.
2. If you have engaged your letting agents as your estate agents on an exclusive basis then I believe they would have the right to ask for their cut. If you have not engaged them on an exclusive basis or have not engaged them at all then you should examine your terms and conditions for the letting agreement, to see if these circumstances are covered by that agreement.
3. CSG is not payable on your pension whilst covered under an E106 or E121. It is, as TU points out, payable on all world wide unearned income. Isa's, Peps and Follow on Tessa's  etc are not tax free in France and like bank or building society interest, are subject to social charges of 11% plus income tax.  Your pension will only be subject to income tax and CRDS. You may also be liable to pay ISF (wealth tax) if your total worth is in excess of 720,000€. You may also wish to pay for top up health cover as the 70% paid is only paid to preset limits (convention) not the true cost.
4. We have no problems with ours! Some people complain about the pump noise but we find it less intrusive than the noise of the cistern filling with water.

8. We use British Insurance Brokers of Aquitaine, 05 53 01 13 84. We have found them to be very helpful although as yet we have not had cause to make a claim, could be worth giving them a ring.

“I have just had a quote for top up insurance 125% of 85 euros per month, my wife and I are 53, is this a good quote or should I shop round?” Very hard to say ! Firstly do you mean that the quote is for 125% of 85€ in other words 106.25€ a month or do you mean that the quote is for reimbursement of 125% of convention for 85€ a month ?   I assume the quote is for both of you and the total annual cost for the two of you, is therefore 1020€ a year or 1275€ a year.   Then you have to look at the cover provided, is the cover a % of convention, and if so what % cover do they offer or is the cover for all charges – frais reels ?   Do you have dental cover or optician cover and are these restricted ?   The insurer we use would cost 443€ a year, per person at age 53 for cover which gives a full refund of all charges, routine dental work to 450€, with crowns limited to to 225€.. There is an overall limit of 160,000€ a year per person for claims.   It is always difficult to compare apples with apples when looking at a mutuelle, I hope this helps.
10. It tells you how much is set against the next years tax return on the contibutions sociales demand, and should be already entered in advance on the next income tax return you are asked to complete.
11.
I have a fiul heater at home. Should I also have to arrange for the chimney to be swept , I wonder?
The guy we use sweeps the fireplace chimney, services the fioul boiler & sweeps it's chimney, so I think the answer is yes.
12. In answer to your questions: a) No. B) Yes the allowances apply and you are taxed on total world wide income if you are resident, so you do not deduct the social charges before applying tax. You will however be able to deduct a part of the social charges from the next years income before tax.   NB for 2003 the rate is 10.15% and for 2004 on it is 11%.
13. The ones I've seen seem to be a permanant fixture. 'Fanny', just south of Périgueux on the Bergerac road, is always on her corner! What I was curious to know was, what is the difference between a plain black cutout and one that has the red 'lightening fork' through it's head - or is that a bit macabre.
14. 100 car park spaces free of charge, but restaurant may be closed for refurb, loads of pay parking close by. Used Speedferries last week - on time both ways.
15. Have just set the satellite receiver to auto select and noticed that there is an hours documentary before the film with the true stories of four 'real' Charlotte Grays - should be interesting. BTW finished the book this morning in bed instead of coming on here with a cup of tea as usual! (thanks for the loan Coral - it will be in the post this afternoon).
16. .... can I finish the book by saturday? What good timing, although I'm usually disappointed by the film adaptations. Only 47 pages to go!!
17. "this definitely appears on my list of no-no's, along with the other offender which is boudin noir !" We have boudin noir sometimes for dinner now, in small quantities it's rather nice especially with sliced caramelised apples (in butter, sugar & cinnamon). Very good for you too - full of iron. We first tried the BN with apple in it, yum, then with onion (prefer the apple version), and I've got the chilli version inthe fridge at the moment, maybe tonight
18. There seems to be no 'rules & regulations' of any sort as fireworks are on open display in toy shops, in the 'bargain' shops and at the local hardware store.
19. Work very long hours, cover lots of kilometers, pay out for loads of fuel, buy lots of maps, keep receipts for everything, ask lots of questions, trust no one but let everyone know you trust them, expect to be insulted by everyone when you mention that your an estate agent. Pay 46% of income in social charges and then pay your income tax. On an income after expenses of 20,000€ pa expect 8000€ net before tax in year 3, (figures from chamber of commerce). Expect phone calls at all hours from worried clients who have just read another book and have some concerns. Quiz the vendors to make sure they do have a CU and that they have not signed an exclusive agreement with other vendors which will take half your commission, make sure that they have agreement from all of the owners to sell! If you can avoid dealing with clients referred from UK agencies, do so, otherwise 50% of the commission goes to them. Be aware that it is a cut throat industry and other agents will attempt to steal your vendors and or buyers. Never sign anyone up on an exclusive agreement - it is bad for the vendor and will do little for your reputation. If you have to ask an important question of your employer and their staff, ask at least 4 of them and select the answer you prefer. Trust the Notaire staff as far as you can throw them and if they quote you a price always question the price, as they are fallible too. Let everyone know you are an agent and work very hard at being a good one as it will pay off in the long run. It can be great fun and very rewarding despite the frustrations, but do not expect to earn more than a few pounds an hour! All that said if you have it in you to succeed it is a rewarding career, but you may need a thick skin and lots of patience plus a bucket or two of enthusiasm. Never ever bull***** and never make promises you cannot keep. Good luck and good selling.
20.
I heard that Free to View cards would work in any box and only subscription cards were box specific. Mazan could confirm this..........John in Dept 79
You are correct! Free to view cards do! I have tried pay to view and free to view in the past and they did not work in other boxes, however having just tried it, the free to view does work, can anyone confirm if the pay to view are transferable now?
21.
Dear Sheila, It is only if you've suscribe in France an "Assurance vie"(life insurance) or a PERP(which is a special saving which is not available before being retired) which allow you to deduct the ...
Hi Celine, perhaps you can help me understand this better. I thought that this was a statement showing the amount that you can invest into a PERP in the current financial year and that it would then be deductible when calculating next years tax demand and that the PERP was in planning for retirement rather than after retirement. I do not believe that it is an allowance of some description against investment in an Assurance Vie, but if it is I would be well pleased to discover more. By the way, whilst an Assurance Vie does include a small amount of life insurance cover (to satisfy the taxation advantages it provides), it is, in essence, a wrapper for a flexible, tax advantageous, savings and investments vehicle, in a similar fashion to PEP's and ISA,s. They also provide an excellent vehicle for minimising or completely avoiding inheritance tax.
22. Just had the Speedferries experience and at 25 GBP each way and less than hour to cross it was just the job!
23. Is the declaration required in order to increase your taxes?
