  2. And I don't know why I am suddenly producing duplicated posts, having only pressed the button once. I tried to delete the last one immediately but permission was denied. Remains to be seen if it will happen with this one, too.
  3. I readily admit that personally I am useless with IT but it would be common courtesy for someone supposedly running the show to at least acknowledge the problem and explain what was being done about it.

  7. Not sure if this has been aired on the Forum before but I thought I would give it a go. I have taken advantage of the tunnel Frequent Traveller deal for the past few years, saving hundreds of pounds over the standard fare, especially if maximum use is made of the tickets which expire after 365 days. A friend who normally visits another part of France twice a year has been happy to be my nominated co-holder and paid for 4 singles, leaving me with 6 tickets for my 3 return trips. However, he can't make it this coming year so I was wondering if a forum member who uses the tunnel might be interested in going in with me. I will need to book shortly as I will be travelling early in July so the co-holder would have to think in terms of using his/her tickets between July 2018 and June 2019. The tickets work out at £46 each way, covering car, van, etc plus passengers. See https://www.eurotunnel.com/uk/tickets/types/frequent-traveller/ Let me know if interested. The details can be sorted out through PMs.
  8. It was a simple filter problem when we experienced something similar with our Miele machine. I had checked the inlet hose filter but it took me a while to realise that there is one at each end of the hose! The top one at the machine end I had examined was clear, no doubt because the bottom one was clogged. Cleaned it out and problem went away immediately. Also improved the rinsing.
  9. £2 a year. That's it, I'm definitely selling up.
  10. Thanks Idun. I wasn't aware of the custom to split it but he was asking me to pay the whole lot.
  11. The Notaire tried to charge me for property tax that was the responsibility of the seller. When I pointed out the rules - which he surely must have known - he backed down, but it did make me wonder if the Notaire had some reason for favouring the French seller over a foreign purchaser.
  12. At some point, the French people will have to make a choice. Chatting to the locals here, they have little sympathy for rail staff who have employment terms they can only dream of. But they dislike the Parisian government even more. So despite the determination and good intentions of Macron, it would not surprise me at all if he ends up being dumped like predecessors who have tried to change things that are considered to be central to French culture. Of course, this is a rural community with a tiny population and although they consider their way of life more important than the national economy (which they feel is more relevant to Paris and the large cities), perhaps the towns will outvote the villages when the crunch comes. Who knows?
  13. If I can get through Kent, I shall be travelling down from Calais to Central France on Friday so I would be grateful if you could chuck plenty of salt around on your roads, please, Wooly.
  14. Back in the 70s, a bejewelled old dear buried in a fur coat and large hat was parking a Rover 2000 in an enormous space along Cheltenham Promenade. She never once turned her head or tried to use the mirrors but just went back and forth, walloping the cars in front and behind until she had got somewhere near the kerb. My wife and I and other pedestrians tried to stop her but she was oblivious to all protestations. Eventually, she calmly got out and walked into Cavendish House while notes were scribbled for the owners of the cars that had been thumped. I don't think she was French.
  15. Going off at a slight tangent but similar message. When buying car parts, I always search against the part number rather than just the make and model of the car to see if it is common to other vehicles. My Alfa has a General Motors diesel engine used in a variety of cars, including some Vauxhalls and Saabs. If I buy it as a Vauxhall part, exactly the same item by the same manufacturer can be half the price quoted for the Alfa part. This applies to most of the engine bits. The heater resistor is also fitted to some Renaults and costs far less as a Renault part. As Noisette suggests, it pays to look beyond the large print. Scams everywhere.
  16. Why would Francophones need to take French classes?

    soggy drive

We have a long sloping grass drive, too, and cars often get stuck in mud half-way up during the winter. I tried some plastic footpath stuff (with open mesh structure) that was supposed to provide grip and, whilst it helped as a walking surface, it was still too slippery for vehicles when wet or muddy. I then looked at some rubberised "mats" instead that offered more grip but they were so expensive, for the quantity we needed, that we bit the bullet and dug out some tramways and put down a stone and gravel base. I don't think I would entertain any of these options if I was selling - let the purchaser incur the expense - unless it was a factor that was actually putting off potential buyers.
