  1. When I lived in the UK we used to have the most amazing food delivered from Scotland. Loch Fyne kippers, arbroath smokies, caledonian cheeses, fantastic back bacon and oatcakes. Their shellfish was brilliant too. I always thought that, if I ever got to visit, I wouldn't starve.
  2. and you'll be surprised how quickly the first five years will pass. 😀
  3. I've always fancied going to Edinburgh. I'm glad you liked it.
  4. I think you have to apply for permanent residence. It isn't automatic. Also, if you're going to apply you have to remember that during the qualifying five years you cannot leave France for a consecutive period exceeding six months and, in total, you cannot spend more than ten months out of the country.
  5. I think most of us that are residents moved well before Brexit so our understanding of the new visa systems might be limited but by doing a bit of research I can confirm that a Visiteur visa would not entitle you to apply for either a Carte de Sejour pluriannuelle or Carte de Resident 10 ans.
  6. To all those in its path. Stay safe you guys 🙏
  7. Menthe, I'm so sorry. It's horrible when these things happen but.. You gave him everything he was prepared to take. He chose where he wanted to die. Sometimes, standing back is all we can do.
  8. My first thought would be don't do it. My last cat became ill during lockdown and I scoured the internet for ways of humanly killing him and all I found were dire warnings of what could happen if it went wrong. It's a horrible situation to be in Menthe and the only thing I can suggest ( if he's so afraid of humans that you're unlikely to get him to the vet ) is that perhaps a kindly hunter might put him out of his misery. Sorry
  9. If you want an all in one solution perhaps you could try a 'professionnel du débarras'. I've done a search online and found a couple of websites that might help. https://www.debarras-de-maison.com/ https://www.lescompagnonsdebarrasseurs.com/debarras-maison.html I hasten to say I've no experience of using this kind of service.
  10. Our local red cross will take most stuff.
  11. I'm assuming most RHD cars would have a foreign number plate. Otherwise wouldn't it be noted on the Carte Gris ?
  12. You've got me really curious now. Why is someone living in America interested in a forum about France ? Go on wilsondavid tell us about yourself. 😀
  13. Hopefully Jyothi k will be back shortly with the answer.
  14. I think it's interchangeable. What's the French connection to Madras?
  15. If you ever take a trip from Clermont L'Hérault to Beziers in the Autumn you'll probably see them lined up outside every village shop. I have Dutch friends that still time their wine run to coincide with the season.
  16. The first sweet onions I ever had came from Lezignan-la-cebe. It's been a while but I would suggest that they were even better than the Cevennes.
  17. Do you want to try cleaning that post up Harnser or shall I ? Edit. Done. ( Best I can do )
  18. I don't know how you would describe "worst". Certainly there were some cases that were more difficult then others but it was never a case of 'good ghost, bad ghost'. The way it was explained to me as a child was that the world was full of echos of past lives. Like ripples on a pond. Most people swim through the ripples without noticing they exist but occasionally someone will be 'buffeted'. The bigger the ripple the stronger the turbulence and the more likely the memory of the past life would be seen. I was being simplistic when I called my father an exorcist. He's job was more to deal with the living, educating them to not be afraid of what they were experiencing. Nine times out of ten, once the fear was gone so did the 'ghosts'. They hadn't of course it was simply that the living had learnt to swim through the ripples. Occasionally there was an echo so terrible that no one in their right mind would be able to happily live alongside it. Then the only options were to either remove the object from the home or, if that was not possible, remove those who were sensitive of the event from the scene. As 99.9999% of people won't see anything in their lifetimes it's quite reasonable to sell a house because for you it was haunted.
  19. Not a lot to say really. It wasn't exactly his day job. Normally he'd get a call when someone 'felt something'. Most times it was just an over active imagination but there were times when he had to 'ask' a presence to leave. Very occasionally it didn't work which was when he'd call in the professionals. I grew up hearing ghostly tales around the dinner table and when I reached puberty I was taken to a known haunting site to see if I had the gift. I didn't. Shortly afterwards I discovered punk and lost interest in ghosts.
