1.
Er yes I am sure I have got the right one. This forum has become really quite. Gone are the days of lively debate with the likes of "Miki" abusing everyone in sight. .
Whats lively about encouraging tax dodging and fraud?[8-)] You are also  totally wrong about Miki, he runs or ran a B&B business in France and was a great help to many people setting up a similar business, he was banned sometime back but not for being abusive, he wrote what he thought and was sometimes wrong as we all are but is the Forum any better or worse for his demise, the posts are certainly shorter!!  Looking back at your posts, its puzzling that you cite Miki as you never had any dealings with him or Dick Smith. I don't know if you post elsewhere but there is a petrol brand sounding forum where comments like yours about ducking and diving and letting others pay extra taxes and charges for the under the radar people who infest France will be much appreciated.
2. "To be honest the alternative seems far less likely, so are you suggesting that someone can register for AE, never do any work or put anything through and automatically be in the health care system?" If you replace "can" with "have been able to" in the above quote, you have got the picture.[;-)]  The idea which came from the previous president and it was "to plant acorns from which trees would grow".  To do that Chirac recognised that the main obstacle to starting a business was the charges that had to be paid up front irrespective of income.  The idea was these AE would grow and employ people etc and become SARLs, I remember the press coverage of it I think it was in Lyon when Chirac launched the idea.  What then happened was some immigrants from within the EU who were not entitled to health care after 11/07 found that by starting an AE they could get into the health system that way.  That loophole may, as forecast for some time now, be being closed.
3. If you are in the position to have to make tax declaratiuon in France and the UK, you do get the benefit of the tax free allowances in both counties, and it can be beneficial in some cases.  As for the other poster, typical ex Civil Servant " do as I say and not as I do"[:P]
4. Yes he did and still does!! It is a real name and a colleague of mine at work's daughter married his son.  He was not a French speaker and knew liitle about France, so  I told him that in France they translated the name to M Champignon and not Champagne as that was not allowed,  He was not pleased to hear that and demanded how he was supposed to tell his daughter that in France she would be known as Mrs Mushroom!![:D]
5.
That offenders list is fascinating, Peter - interesting that it contains three professions in the medical field (dentists, cosmetic surgeons and trick cyclists) - amazing that people are prepared to trust them enough to pay them "under the table" - what happens when things go wrong? - one is bound to wonder.
Coops, it may not be "under the table" but just payments by cash.  many old people still do not use cards in rural France,  When I went to a specialist recently I had to pay 28€ they didn't have a card machine so it was cash or cheque, and since my local dentist retired and I am trying different ones some of those wanted cash or cheques, so it might not be the client who are complicite in any under reporting of receipts, then there was my roofer who would do 10% discount for cash.........[Www]
6.
..........French Railways want you to book in advance and it appears so do the cheap airlines. WendyG
That is not right[8-)] You can buy a ticket at the station on the day of travel and even buy a ticket on the train on SNCF, done it many times when the ticket office has been closed.  And as myself and others have posted you can also turn up at most airports and buy tickets certainly the two the OP would use, Rodez or Toulouse.  What you will do with the lo-cost airlines is pay a premium fare, but that is how their fares policies work.  However they are not always bank breaking, Toulouse to London tomorrow is only 122€, much cheaper than the same flight booked in advance for some Fridays.
7.
Cooperlola Sorry, but I was under the impression that the 6months rule was only part of the equation, we have lived here for about 10months a year for about 14years now. My main country of support, eg house, pension, clubs joined etc means that we are UK resident for tax purposes. Perhaps I am wrong?
Assuming this is not a wind up.  Yes you are wrong .  You should have been declaring and paying tax, social charges and healthcare contributions in France for the last 14 years.[:-))]  There is no criteria on earth that makes you a UK resident, your pension and club membership is irrelevant. Just as a mattter of interest how have you been getting healthcare for the last 14 years. That case that Benjamin cites is an exception where the person is evading tax and not avoiding it and all sorts of issues come into play for people who try and evade income tax, in your case there is no doubt whatsoever[:$].
8. Spot on Mr Q.  Just leave the new 4 x 4 round the corner so as not to arouse suspicion, old clothes on, into the Mairie with oil bill and tax advice showing you paid no tax in  France and hey presto 250€ in the bank before you got home.[:-))]  Of course nobody on this Forum who are all upright citizens of France claimed it as it was meant for those in genuine need.....[Www]  I believe greedy Sarko might have stopped this now......[:P]
9. Not only the papers make the News,Nick,  the BBC do aa fair bit to fill  up its 24 hours Classic today, " People who can chose their own working hours enjoy better physical and mental health, a report has suggested, but this was not suitable for people in the construction and retail sectors". [:-))] Never!!
10. Didn't find this on first google, but if anyone is interested its all here. http://rome.angloinfo.com/countries/italy/motoregister.asp
11. Trying to help someone out and I realise that its not strictly French driving but has anyone had occasion to register a UK registered van in Italy, or even a car?  If so, is it similar to France, paperwork?  Are there DIRE's etc  TIA
12. I think the ruling is what Will has been saying for it seems ever, just nobody wants to listen as they cross off their 183 days on their calendars[blink].
13.
.......... It seems silly that Ryanair fly planes not full but you cant simply turn up at the airport on the day for a cheap standby ticket. Can that possibly make economic sense?
Where did you get that idea from?  You can turn up and get a ticket at the airport if there is room on the plane. Another/Ernie, you saying that Ryanair used airports have no check in staff, who checks in the AirFrance flights at Rodez then?  Friends of ours had to fly back for a similar reason to the OP from Rodez and got tickets on the day at the airport.
14.

How ridiculous to read these rabid right comments from people who are themselves immigrants, but prefer to hide behind the name 'ex-pats' [:D]
Yes but we are immigrants who bring a lot to France.
Yes and in the case of one or two here take a lot out as well, eg French winter fuel allowance claimed by teachers and ex cops and civil servants with fat UK taxed pensions.  Wonder what Le Monde would make of that, must ask.............[Www] Quillan wrote " but what I do think is wrong, and irresponsible, is the media not only winding people up but not telling the truth and not investigating things properly before printing them." Is there an electiuon coming?   [:-))]  I wonder what those Ugandan gays Cameron is bringing into the country will vote, will they be there in time??
15.
They get free uk healthcare don't they? The reverse is not the same. New people enteringn France have to get private insurance.
Only if they don't work.  If they work they get the same healthcare as the rest of the French nation  Why should you an immigrant[:P]  get special treatment not afforded to those who live here and graft here?
16. Was this a letter or Email?  If an E mail, be careful as there were and are lots of scam E mails about purporting to come from orange telling of overpayments and credits available and demanding bank details and log ins to make the repayments.........[Www]
17. Thanks again for your help and patience, its much clearer now.[:D]
18. Thanks Big Mac, but I'm not sure I understand you. We have had a new roof installed made up of 6 oak A frames, with chestnut boards nailed on top for slate fixing.  I want  to fill the space between the trusses with plasterboard with some form of insulation behind the plasterboard, leaving the best part of the beams exposed.  Are you saying there is need for an air space between the insulation and the boards?   If I understand you, you are saying use metal framework, (as you would a stud wall?) and fix the plasterboard to that after filling the gap with insulation, if I have got that bit correctly, why do I need to fake anythings?
19. A bit harsh I think, It was not Robinson's  fault that his player got a yellow card, then another for an accidental trip (funny no replays of this were shown[6]) and then for some inexplicable reason the Scots thumped the ball straight to the Welsh so they could score again. What would have happened if they just thumped it down the field from the 24-24 restart and out of play?
20.
Very interesting document ANO. I wonder how thay decided that these people are entitled to free NHS treatment have been identified as having been trafficked from abroad or are believed to have been trafficked from abroad
Perhaps this refers to children and groups of people found in the back of, or  under lorries who may be in need of treatment.
21. Does anyone know what the situation is with an EHIC if someone who is a French resident in all senses of the word goes to live in the UK for more than 6 months doing unpaid work, like looking after a grandchild, elderly relative? What would be the position re a GP, dental care and normal medications supplies?
22. Some knowledgeable people on this thread so can I add a question?.  I have just had a new roof installed made of oak in the traditional style of A frames. The space between the boards needs filling in the same way as WJT needed to do on her room to maintain the exposed beams except this is a 6 metre high roof.  What is the recommended method of boarding between roof beams?   I have used plasterboard with pre-fitted foam insulation for the interior walls but is this the best for a roof?  Is there a thinner insulating option?    If plasterboard is the best covering with an insulator between that and the roof boards, what is the recommended method of fixing, battens to the insides of the beams, any type of wood, sizes, screwed, nailed?  etc etc  Thanks in advance
23. A cheaper and similar option to the Livebox is the neufbox from SFR.  If you have the TV its about 30€  amonth with free calls to France and fixed phones in many countries. The financial advantage over Orange is that the telephone line is included in the package, but its not a straightforward changeover by any means.  Be prepared for no phone line for a couple of days as the line was changed over very quickly and before the neufbox arrived so no line out was possible until the connection was completed.  You also lose your E mail address with wanadoo/orange.  Cancelling with orange was very easy, (lots of standard letters on the internet and recorded letter also done and sent via the internet)  - as was returning the Livebox, which is now to Dry cleaners and tabacs and not the local Orange shop[8-)].
24. You are right RH, his death will always provoke debate and conspiracy theories, however, he wasn't as far as I know a medical doctor and so in an alleged pill driven haze,  may just have done as you or I would do and copy what he had seen on the the tele!!  Thanks to Silent Witness, we all now know how to do it properly!!
