What delicacy? Help!

In Brighton twenty years ago I think somewhere near Gardner Street. One of those roads up from the railway station. There was a small shop that sold foods and bread - quite unusual foods - the one I am trying to remember/trace was a cricket ball sized dough-like ball served warm it was veggie and very tasty - I think it may have been an East European/German foodstuff.

Do you know what this was/is and can you point me towards a recipe - I liked them so much I had to keep going back for another. I kick myself for not making a note of its name.

Was it a Gefüllte Klöße?  (or Filled Dumpling?)

Very popular in  Saarland, I once ordered 2 of them for my lunch on a Saturday  then didn't eat for the rest of the weekend!

Mostly they have a minced pork filling (therefore not veggie)  and are covered in a cream sauce like this

but I believe they are also made with a veg or even potato filling. The potato one must give you your carbos ration for a month in one hit !

Not samosas  - I  know how to make them and various Indian veggie balls even had some chinese sweet and sour lentil balls at the weekend.

These balls were grey and squidgy and tasted lovely and herby.

Can't help with the dough thingies, but the shop sounds a lot like Infinity Foods, which was - and still is - in North Road on the corner of Gardner Street. They specialised in wholefoods long before that became trendy, had their own bakery that turned out all sorts of foreign breads as well as the more usual stuff. I'm talking about early 1970s or even before.

If that's the shop you are thinking of it has a web site here and now has a thriving wholesale business, and a café, as well as the small shop. The area is now called North Laine and has moved upmarket from being the home of loads of second-hand and discount tat stores to typical Brighton trendiness.

Cheers Will I did search and found that site but it looked rather posh and there is no mention of these balls on there.

It was quite a scruffy shop with an old edwardian facade when I went.

If they were that long ago it must be them.

I used to go there to get my non leather shoes. Very annoying as they were made in Northamptonshire where I lived but the shop in Brighton had an exclusive contract with Doc Martin to make Lorica six hole shoes. I even spoke to the factory but they were adamant they wouldn't supply me direct.

I am only describing them as I saw them - they did taste lovely that's the reason I still remember them.

Sorry Pierre not to reply to your suggestion - I did check it out but my German is pants and there is no stuffed content.

don't know how you spell it but I had a lovely dumpling in Austria called something like a gurnkanoodle or something like that it was white fairly soft light consistancy but was really really filling

One holiday with my brother and sister in law things were rather windy and I blamed it on the Germans. It became an in joke for a bottom blarf so yes it is possible.
