nomoss
Hi cajal. Your post appeared while I was writing and checking mine in Word.I would love to have the skill to make gates - or anything in wood - myself.Unfortunately, as a carpenter I make a pretty good butcher, and exasperated our carpentry master at school.Maybe a matter of patience, but I have plenty of that in other activities. PaulT
Perhaps if you are not in to woodwork then firstly buy the tools, have an attempt, have another....yes, it is better but not good enough to put on display so have another go and think that will do. Then when you tell people 'I made those', they comment 'I can see that'. Place the new tools somewhere out of the way because they will never be used again. The end result is it costing more than ones made commercially :)
Gluestick
Fascinating...................This thread reminds me of all those years ago, when I had taken my intermediate and was working (and studying for finals) in the City for a Belgian shipping line. Now in those far off halcyon days, freight rates had to be calculated from the ship's manifest for billing (using a comptometer, incidentally) and depended upon cube and weight and type of cargo. An older guy was one of our chums; and when he went out to lunch, a couple of us young pranksters, made up a spoof freight note for:Ten cases of De-Hydrated Water. The poor sap spent an hour tearing out his hair searching and searching what were called The Conference Books - Short Sea English Channel - for a rate! Eventually, we heard him ask his manager: "Sid, where can I find a rate for De-Hyd r a t e d W a t................."You barstewards!" he screamed as the penny finally dropped.[:D]
nomoss
Do you mean like these two I made a couple of years ago?The rails were in 5 metre lengths x5 = €80. The stiles were2 x4metre lengths =€24 which I was able to load on my Ford F150 with ease. The opening between thewalls is 3 metres. All the joints are mortice and tenoned, pegged and glued up with polyurethaneglue. The 2 leading stiles are both rebated top to bottom to enable them bothto interlock. The lock-down bolt, a spare from some volets, locates into apiece of copper pipe I hammered into the ground. I also fitted 4 new gondsinto the wall for the hinges. Each gate took me 4/5 days to complete and hang, although there was a 6 monthsdelay between finishing the righthand and starting the lefthand. A small matterof a triple pontage cardiac interupted the work schedule.Go on, try it yourself.
I have a 1970’s Workmate, a small Stanley smoothing plane, a couple of handsaws, a blunt tenon saw, a 1" wood chisel, several hammers, a 12"ruler, a 10' steel tape, a couple of small bar clamps, and a scribe. No work bench, no wood vice, no power tools except an electric drill, no largeclamps. What other tools would I need to make 2 gates to span 4 metres, and how longshould it take me?What tools and equipment do you have? You say you took 4/5 days for each gate. Allowing a relaxed 6 hours per daythis is, say, 54 hours, but it would probably take me at least twice as long ifI didn't give up.The gates in Vienne cost 366€ plus estimated 150€ to collect, 516€.Your cost was 104€, cost of collecting material ignored, plus (at least) 54hours work. That's 412€ for the work, which is less than 8€ per hour. So probably 4€ perhour for me, for an inferior result.I'm afraid, if I have to work, I'd rather spend my time servicing and repairingmy cars, when I'm not too busy with the house or garden, and pay someoneskilled to do what I can't do.I have all the tools, manuals, and equipment I need, including a pit, and I havedone it for years, so the hours I take are comparable to those charged by theVAG agent at 50 to 75€ per hour. The only thing that slows me down is waiting for parts, but I have plenty more to do to fill the time[:D]

nomoss
Yesterday I requested a quotation from the company in Montmorillon and received it at 1030 this morning.366€ TTC for the gates and 53€ TTC for transport. Some companies here are on the ball, it seems.
