Rose Posted August 3, 2009 Share Posted August 3, 2009 Hello... can I really be thinking about christmas already? mmm, well yes I am...[:$]We're thinking of spending christmas in the snow. We did this a few years ago in Oslo, in a log cabin, and we had a great time. This time we're thinking perhaps the Pyrenees? We're not skiiers, although the children would love to have a go... but we do love walking and treking... in snow of course!Anyone out there who could recommend a resort or place that would be good for us... or some accommodation ideas? Rose Posted August 12, 2009 Author Share Posted August 12, 2009 just a little update to my post in the hope that someone can make some suggestions.Due to the problems with winter flights to Bergerac our family are going to fly to Toulouse... and we'll drive down to collect them... so... can anyone offer suggestions as to the best place to head for from here for christmas snow. Ideally we'd love to rent a gite/apartment/cabin so that we can walk out into the snow? However I would think that the chances of snow on the doorstep are probably not guaranteed at all in December. Precipitation in the Pyrenees is fairly random at the best of times. Absolutely worn out after a (for me) energetic walk, and scarey drives around hairpins etc.There are hundreds of appartments in La Mongie village, with access by ski-lift to the ski slopes. If you like to be with lots of people.http://www.j2ski.com/ski_resorts/France/La_Mongie.htmlArreau is a pretty town in a good area for walking in the snow, so you could try there for something a bit less commercialised. zeb Posted August 12, 2009 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Have a look at mountain based gites on www.gites-de-france.com or www.abritel.com They are usually reasonable priced and extremely well furnished and heated.We usually spend Christmas at a gite near Peyragudes (but it's booked for Christmas this year) just past Arreau, although we only live an hour away. Skiing on Christmas Day, or even sitting about at Peyragudes drinking hot wine and people watching, is brilliant before going back for a full roast turkey dinner in front of the log fire.Where ever you decide to stay, in or near the mountains, you'll have a great time as everything is open at Christmas and the scenery is fabulous. Scooter Posted August 17, 2009 Share Posted August 17, 2009 Difficult to guarantee snow anywhere at Christmas but there are lovely resorts throughout the pyrenees within easy distance. Bagneres de Luchon is lovely as is Peyregudes and the villages on the Col de Peyresourde, ideally situated between Peyresourde and Superbagneres.We are at St Beat on the border of Spain and there are lovely walks and treks in the Val d'Aran region.Hope you enjoy your stay in this lovely region.
