Any idea what caused this?

I have seen this previously on the floor of our woodstore and this time photographed it, hoping someone might have an answer as to what might have caused it.  I'm just curious.  Previously I had put it down to a couple of holes in the corrugated iron roof and rain drips, but there are not enough to cause so many and so widespread.  There is no door, so suppose it could be drips blowing in? but even after the heavy rains the floor is very dry.  We have seen deer, the odd hare and know of wild boar, but can think of nothing that might fit the bill.

Many thanks for that Chris, that does indeed seem to be the likely cause.  We do have them around having even sat and watched them near the terrace burrowing into the gravelly ground, but not knowing what they were.  The holes in the wood store are all blind, probably because the sandy floor is so dry and fine I assume it just refills and they then try somewhere else?   either that or they are just burying their prey as some of the googling research suggests.

Even though were only as far south as the Sarthe, there does seem to be such a fascinating variety of wildlife, I can't wait to spend more time there.  Perhaps find a book or two to help identify things and if you have any recommendations along these lines I would be very interested to hear.
