Bonfires

Hi,

A message from the Marie says it is not permissable to light bonfires between 15th Feb to 15th May if you live within 200metres from any woodland or copse.

This seems strange with the wet Springs we seem to get in the Dordogne/Charente !!

Can anyone confirm this law?

Also does this mean we can light bonfires after 15th May?

It is within the remit of the maire to publish an arrêté municipal (local bylaw) stating that bonfires are not allowed between given dates.

Ours states that no bonfire is to be lit if the wind is predicted to be over a given speed.

As for the end-date, you might find that the bylaw is renewed.

The best way to find out is to refer to the information panel outside the mairie nearer the date. The info has to be posted there by law.

This article might give you an idea of why the bylaw came in effect.

Not a national law, but a departmental order.  Surprisingly most brush or forest fires in the area occur in the springtime, warm sunny days and cold frosty nights create very dry conditions, at just the time that people start clearing their gardens or fields by burning off undergrowth.

The link below points to one issued in 2001, and each year since

A bit more info here...

So you can light fires between the the end of May and beginning of June.
