I have found out of all of the local Breton makes including artisanal, none beats Lidl.The local ones are to me, very sickly and not a nice buttery flavour at all, rather like manufactured shortbread against homemade. idun Posted May 7, 2012 Author Share Posted May 7, 2012 Chancer they are biscuits, bit shortbreadish but slightly thicker, wicked wicked food that I'm sure you do not indulge in anymore. Have you really stopped eating bread? Val2, I bought two packets from a french week at lidl and they are gone and I'm going to have to make some. They'll take no making, it's just as with these things I have about 8 recipes. I'm in the reverse situation, rather like when I got to France, some food or other we miss and I make it, if I can. Val_2 Posted May 8, 2012 Share Posted May 8, 2012 No here in Bretagne they are palet, a galette is a savoury crêpe or in the case of my new car, a space saving wheel which is all you get now it seems and you have to pay extra for that. A galet here is also a large round pebble found on the beach and when we get gales here, there are a couple of local beaches where the road runs by and they get thrown all over the road. A palette is also part of a local game here, throwing a flat iron disc (palette). It gets very confusing sometimes. We tend to call biscuits gateaux to cover all eventualities. idun Posted May 8, 2012 Author Share Posted May 8, 2012 LOL Yes I know that gateaux will cover everything and I bet that TVA is charged on everything in France too......... but do you remember the Jaffa Cake thing whereby the VAT man wanted to charge VAT on jaffa cakes as they said that they were chocolate biscuits. The Jaffa Cake people told them that when cakes get stale they get hard and when biscuits get stale they get soft. How true...... and McVities won. They are as it says on the box, a cake. Chancer Posted May 8, 2012 Share Posted May 8, 2012 I found that out the hard way, I put jaffa cakes in the biscuit tin and all the others went soggy [:(]No biscuits for me now and yes Idun I have not eaten bread in over a year thanks to, in my mind, the hypnotism, its strange but if I am caught out away from home and need to eat then I have no problem with buying a small sandwich but when lovely French bread is on the table I find it extremely unappealing.I had heard of galettes Breton but not palet although I thought I was hearing galet as in the stone so maybe they were saying palet, this morning someone who has returned from a week in Bretagne offered around what he called the best galettes Brêton that he had ever tasted, €1.50 from the local Casino and he was urging others to buy them there, they are actually made in Bretagne no doubt in a large factory but apparently they are true to the original and contain no preservatives.I will be going to Bretagne at weekend of Pentecôte, a diving holiday from the port of (I think) Crouesty Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
