Quimper Pottery

Recommended Posts

Don't worry about the two eared bowl - there are plenty of imitators, Pornic and Malicorne to name but two.

I heard about this at the end of last week, I've been to the factory several times and its very worrying for the employees, but they have been in a fairly similar position before.  The powers that be are keen to do their best to keep the faiencerie going as its an 'Emblem of Brittany' whether they will be successful this time I just don't know.

French employment law hasn't helped, the items are expensive too, all items are hand painted and training painters takes several years

If you go here :http://faiencedequimper.blogspot.com/ scroll down to where it is headed HB Henriot cherche un repreneur - it gives the story

PS If there is a sale I'm catching the first ferry !!![:D]

I felt quite upset when I first heard, I had been working on an article about the pottery and re reading the history, the faiencerie survived the French revolution, the Franco Prussian war, WW1 and WW2. At one stage it took 30 men to deal with the wood to fire the kilns, now there are only a total of 50 working there.

HB Henriot is kind of part of my everyday life, the pottery decorates my home, I work on the Journal for the Quimper Club and through the Club have made many fellow collector  friends in Europe and the US - it's kind of sad. I'm keeping my fingers crossed !

I like Pornic too, they used to do a very pretty yellow decor with a Breton which was very attractive and fresh. There items are  less expensive, but they are not hand painted but mostly  decorated by tranfer.

One of Quimpers problems is the length of time it takes to train an artist. When they paint the 'biscuit' they have to be very accurate as the paint quickly sinks in and cannot be erased, no room for error.......
