carp fishing the charente river

Recommended Posts

Anybody out there fished the charente river for carp or have any information as to good areas to try. Just purchased a house near Saint Savinien and would like to make use of the river on holidays. There dosn't appear to be any lakes in the region looking at the map book anybody know of any smaller ones in the area.

A fishing question, not much chance of a reply afraid, seems to be very few anglers here, least wise who contribute to LFF. My mate asked  a while back about like minded souls who want to go fishing in the collective, meet somewhere have a bit of a fish, meet back at local hostelry for some serious bragging and a 1/2 pint, every 3/4 weeks sort of thing but got nothing back. I replied to make him feel better. [:D]

I am not too sure where you are so cannot offer much in the way of info, othet than get out and about now whilst you can still peer thru trees and spot small lakes, if you see a car stopped close to a river go out and watch, see what tackle he is using and gauge from that, what he/she , for all female anglers apologies for not considering you earlier, is after or even better, go and ask !!

If you have no joy and you are not too far away from Riberac/Perigeux pm me and we will try and tie up somewhere to wet a line, good luck, hugh.

Cheeers for the info lads have had a couple of looks at the river charente but havn't tried any areas yet for the carp. There appears to be plenty of interest from the french lads in the carp just looking at the gear they are using on the river. Was asking the question because i only fish the lakes in the uk don't normally fish rivers, so was looking for areas anybody had previously fished. Have had a look around and can't see any lakes though should have bought in limousin lake country!

Hello all,

Ive fished the Vienne a bit and had some success. I plan to spend a bit of time on the Charente, but it might not be this year :(  but have no experience as yet, I have heard there are some BIG catfish in there. I look forward to hearing how you get on. ;)

Hi Bud when you fished the Vienne was it for the carp. Did you target any particular areas. The information i have had from mates who fish rivers in the UK is inside of bends and areas where streams or rivers meet as well as fallen trees and stretchs where there are lillies. I think from imformation gained so far and fishing the river Seine some twelve years ago the carp seem to be more widespread in french rivers than in the UK. Least i hope so. if i find anything out about the cats i will let you know.

The Vienne is full of carp, the best ive had is 6k, of which ive caught a few, just into the Haute Vienne (87) its heaving with fish 4-8k & I dont doubt bigger. Into the Charente Ive seen fish to upto about 12k caught although they have evaded me :( ,,,,,,,,,so far ;) .

Ill probably only do a little bit of fishing this summer with my daughter who has started to show an interest, and it'll probably only be friends lakes/ponds. I might try to get some crayfish from the Vienne though.

You need a big lead to hold the bottom of the vienne 70-80 gram upto 120 in some places therefore a strong rod, mine arent upto the job really, & a 6k river carp is a strong fish. Avoid fishy boilies as the chub bream and crayfish love them, and id recommend prebaiting for 3-7 days before a session. Might see you on the bank, although im a summertime only fisherman! LOL

Thanks again for the info a bit of momentum gaining on this one good points about lead size will consider that one, suppose depends on how much water is pushing through the river. No problem with rods i have 3lb tect curve infinitys will handle 5oz of lead not sure what that is in gramms. Hoping to find 15kg-20kg carp. Good point about the type of boilies will take that into account probably start with maize good results on the seine prebaiting with that, and cheap!. I'm a fair way from limoges but will check the book you mention.

Hi SNiffy

There are lakes in this area, but most are private or belong to a fishing club. Ask at your local tabac (the one on the corner sells permits) and they will tell you where to go. The communal lake at Genouille is a lovely spot to spend a day for 5 euros. Also another lake in Vandre and so on, but there are probably lakes a bit nearer you as well. You also have a good source of information in your local tourist office (by the bridge).

Tight lines!

Angie

Hello Sniffy

No, but my husband does, we have a small lake in the Charente and he was shocked by the size of your carp from a river, he has caught up to 27lbs but only in a lake here, he's not a carp specialist but is always interested in big catches on the river as he prefers to river fish.

Panda,

Your now making me jealous, your own lake what ive always wanted. The river is full of carp and they go like mad when you hook one even the small ones but it is nice to get one of the bigger ones. That was my first trip on the river although i do a lot of carp fishing in the uk. To get carp of that size on my first trip says to me there is a lot bigger and i am going to enjoy trying to catch them. If your husband needs any tips on kit or tactics for the river let me know.I'm sure there is plenty of carp in your area the charente is very mild so they grow large. would post a picture on here if i knew how lol.
