Haematologists - splenectomy

Hi folks

As a result of complications with my leukemia thing, I may have to part company with my spleen. I'll spare you the gory details other than to say it's about 8/9 times bigger than it should be, making me quite unwell and is a major complication for me.  Depending on what it's actually done inside me (like welded itself to other bits, grown babies (which it can do with my condition)), the effects of having the splenectomy can be radical.

I use a Forum for people with my sort of condition and they hve a database of specialists.  Two names in France:

Prof Najman, Hospital St Antoine, Paris

Prof Jean-Luc Demory, C H St Vincent, Lille

Does anybody have any experience of these two guys or haem departments as I need to think about their survival rates etc?  I'm also searching the Internet for information on them.

I thought I would just say that my wife has Gaucher's disease (some years ago people with this condition were diagnosed as Leukaemia sufferers). There is no cure as yet but all sorts of medication help her out. She had her spleen removed 25 years ago and is still going strong.

She has to be careful about infections and obviously some parts of the world are out of bounds. She has also produced a healthy girl during that 25 year period.

Dont know if this helps allay some fears. I wish you all the best for a long and healthy life.

Many thanks for the kind thoughts etc folks, much appreciated.

I've been in touch with the hospitals already and they have web sites etc. but I'd rather get an idea from people who have been treated there - according to current lists/scores my old UK hospitals score well but they're more like Dewhurst's than places of clinical excellence so I'd like to have contacted people who have used them.

My life in their hands - it probably is at the moment still, went to a fete at the local Mairie this morning, on to the market where we sat outside a local resto and had coffee and wine with friends, business is booming, garden starting to sprout so too many positives to dwell on the might bes.

And thanks again folks - Dick, if the worse comes to the worse, I'll leave my research projects to you!

Tony,

I too wish you all the best. If there are these two top specialists, I do not think that either would have risen to their current eminence on the basis of an 'oh whoops' track record so you can only believe that both are at the top of the profession. So what is better for you - Paris or Lyon?

I also I don't think that you are going to get their track record or batting averages from the internet.

TonyF, you have given the names of two Professeurs, not just Doctors. I would hope that the fact that they have got to such elevated positions meant that they were real experts in their fields. Let's face it there aren't that many Professeurs around.

I would think that both would be good.

good luck

Hi TonyF,

Have a look at this website - It may be of some help. http://www.lepoint.fr/special_hopitaux/doc_1759.html  I know I looked it up when I had a back operation in France a few years ago. At the time, loads of French friends and aquaintances warned me off our local hospital for my operation, and to be frank I was terrified of a failure/c*ck up by the time I had the op, due to their scare tactics, so take any advice from unqualified people with a pinch of salt!

Best and best of luck with your health ! Paul.
