It's very good, extremely stable and can be used just as most people use MS Office, but by using it 'properly', it works even better (imo).  There's no need to wait until you no longer have MS Office, of course -- OOo is available for free, so there's no reason why you couldn't install it now and try it out.  There's a wealth of information, help and support -- start at www.openoffice.org

Incidentally, all of the questions posed in this thread could have been answered by consulting the very useful built-in help.

That is probably true if you know where to look. I looked at 'default file formats' in the OO help, but '.doc' does not show as an default?[8-)]

As I said up there ^ select Microsoft Word 6.0 - that is .doc[:)]
