reregistreing a car in France. How quick can it be done?

Hi I'm back on my soap box again, about my favorite subject.   [:)]

I have heard all sorts of nonsence about how long it takes to reregister a car here in France.  I read just recently how it took someone nearly a year to do it!       I have spoken to others who have taken ages because they had problems.

I know departments are different in what they require. I also know if it is a bit difficult with a grey import, kit car, or simular .But if you take a "normal" car then it should be straight forward. I would be interested to here how different it is in other departments and why it takes them so long.  Just for the record my Quad bike came from Canada, was imported into Spain where it was homologated for Europe. It was then imported to the UK where it was registered for the road. I then brought it to France. I got it reregistered here it took 10 days start to finish. ( The registration not the trip from Canada[8-)]

So here is my story of how quick can it be done.

I went back to the UK to collect my Ford Escort and to see Family, Mid Feb. Whilst there I went to my local Ford dealer (Dagenham Motors) and asked for a Certificate of conformity for France. They took my details, 5 days later a new CoC arrived (In French) Free of charge. I phoned my Insurance agent in France to arrange cover. I told them I would collect it when I arrived.  I live in the Charente dept16. I was booked with Speedferries for this Tuesday at 8:00am.GMT

I arrived in Ruffec in time to book into the Garage for a Control tecnique. This was for Thursday at 15:00 ( Should have telephoned might have got it earlier)       Thursday I collected my Insurance then went to the CT centre. Ct done OK, too late to go to Angouleme by now so left it till morning

Friday morning (Today) went to the Prefecture in Angouleme with all my paperwork or so I thought. When I got to the counter I was told I needed one more piece of paper  ( O Bu**er I thought) Needed a trip to the Hotel de impots for a "quitus des impots". 30 mins later back at the prefecture now with ALL the paperwork. 25 mins later paid over 190€ and voila a nice shiny new Carte Grise. Then off to Feu Vert for some plates. Job done, had a spot of lunch then back home to fit them.

So there you have it from my arrival in France it took 4 days start to finish. [:-))][:-))]

OK NOW I CHALLENGE ANYONE TO DO IT QUICKER (It can be done) [blink]

Yes this is just an attempt to get more people to get there cars registered  here  [Www]

The only problem we had was with the certificate of conformity - Skoda seemed totally at sea as to whether this should be issued from France or the UK.  However, we did it in the correct time scale - while the French insurance company was still happy to insure it with a UK reg'.  My Landy has been a different matter as Swansea lost the paperwork!!

If you have had your Skoda from new then UK dealer that supplied it should be able to arrange it for you,  plus it should be free Try being insistant they can do it if they want

As for your LANDY thats bad luck but not unnormal for the DVLA[:@]

It took me about 4 hours !

  • Went to the Sous Prefecture, queued up and got form to complete and list ofother documents required
  • Went around the corner to Hotel de Impots and got the tax certificate
  • Went back to the car, looked in glove box and found Certificate of Conformity kindly supplied by manufacturers when car was new
  • Filled in the form
  • Went back to Sous Prefecture, handed in all documents
  • Went to  the cash desk and paid fee
  • Collected new Carte Grise

Our car was under four years old so didn't need a CT, but we had already changed headlamps anyway.

All that effort (?) and one year later we changed the car for a French LHD  car which was a very sensible thing to do and what everyone should do as soon as possible - much safer.

I think the process has been streamlined a lot because in 2002 it took me two months. They had to compile a dosier at the sous prefecture (dept 47). In those days none of the staff knew what the procedure was. They even had me go to the weighbridge to get the axle weights checked.

It seems even nowadays to vary between departments. On moving house twice the carte gris took 15 days (dept 33) the first time and then when I went to the sous prefecture who had been responsible for the original import it took 15 minutes.

Edit: I would add that it helps enormously if your French is good. Mine wasn't then.

With all due respect, I think it should count. It took several months with one we had that had been French registered before, but then exported to England. The prefecture hadn't a clue how to deal with it. But that was back in 2002/2003, they are rather more switched on now. Once they had sorted things out it was done within a day.

Your car needs to do some travelling - you then relax about registering your car without hassles.  Ours started as German Reg, then UK, France, Gib, UK and now back in France.  Just hate wasting money on new cars.  9 year old Scenic Dti, with just 120k on the clock, that has only cost us 2 electric motors for windows, new waterpump and wheel bearings outside normal servicing costs - not sexy but if it ain't broke....  Probably change it for a Honda CRV in a few years.

Spend the money on new motorbikes - mine is a grey R1200RT.  SWMBO insisted on changing our R1150RT for a trip to Italy.  That is another story.
