Does anyone have any advice/experience of how to become a taxi driver, been doing this for 10 yrs. in uk but certainly seems more difficult here. Local company has vacancies but needs drivers with diplome conducteur ambulancier. Checking on net this looks like a paramedic qualification! All advice welcome.

To become a self employed taxi driver here you must sign on at the Chambre de Metiers along with all the manual services and do the five day business course in French before getting your SIRET and being put into the cotisations system. When we did ours some 11 years back there were three taxi drivers there doing this and we still see them about today. Have a word with the local company and see just what they require but I think you will have to do a course especially for ambulance car driver and it would all be in french to communicate with your patients.

Our local pompes funebres proprietaire has just passed his l'examen de chauffeur de taxi "ce que lui permet d'ajouter ce créneau a ses nombreuses activities" therefore I would guess that the taxi driving permit is quite seperate from the ambulance driving permit as he's been doing that for a number of years already. He now has a shiny new car with a taxi light on it in addition to his ambulance fleet.
