Wall costs

I would like to build a garden wall, a concrete block affair that could be rendered later will be fine. What can I expect to pay someone per linear meter for something 1m high?

Does that include proper (legal depth) foundations and reinforcing pillars? What height is planned.

I was quoted €3000 for a proper strong retaining wall with regulation depth foundations and strengtheners. Which includes removing the rubble. Height from about 1.80 down to 80 over about 5/6 metres

For one linear metre of  one metre high block wall including foundation, yes that is expensive [:-))]

Dependant on whether the foundation has une semelle the material costs with a small mark up are not far off one third of the devi price not incuding digger hire, muck away etc so the price is probably reasonable, get a few more devis.

Nothing like as daft as it sounds.  I remember a "Grand Design" done this way.  There's quite a bit of this going on in France now also:

A straw bale wall is possible, but you would need to stop the rain getting from above. Here in S Oxfordshire we have a number of earth (terre / masse) walls, but they have little roofs usually tiles. I suppose the way to go would be to have a little thatch roof on the top. My it would look dinky !

The difficulty in France would be getting traditional-sized bales.  Not sure the wall would look so dinky made of those bloomin' great round jobs!
