  1. Hello, So sorry if I am being totally thick !!!, been searching for the Douanes office on the web and in the Pages Jaunes since my post about Breakfast Licence in my nearest town (Bellac) Dept 87 but can't find reference to one anywhere..............does that mean there isn't one in Bellac ??? If anyone lives in my area and knows where the local office to us is please could you point me in the right direction. Thanks so much. Mel.
  2. Thank you water rat. Will have a look at the local office. Regards Mel.
  3. Hi, We have completed our Chambre D'Hote registration with the Maire but need to get our Breakfast Licence Cat 1 (Tea Coffee Orange juice) not sure where we get this from now, could anyone point us in the right direction. we are in dept 87. Near Bellac, Haute Vienne. Thanks for any help. Mel.
  4. Hi Jo, Send him round to us !! LOL. Mel.
  5. Thanks for the replies, Yes I thought about the high pressure water getting behind the render so thanks for confirming my concerns about that. Think I will have a go with a brush and see how it goes.................if anyone knows of a cheap but decent artisan that does outside painting please let me know as I think it may come to that in the end. (Dept. 87) Regards Mel.
  6. Hello, I wanted to know if anyone has had any success using a jet wash to clean rendering ? We want to tidy up the front of the house, but can't afford to paint the whole thing as yet. We have very sound rendering on the front of the house but rain, weather, etc. etc. have left dark staining under the windows and want to know if a jet wash would do the trick to clean it. (before we go out and spend money on one) Any thoughts appreciated. Regards Mel.
  7. Hi, Thanks very much for the replies, will let you know how it all goes. Kind Regards Mel.
  8. Hello, Just wanted some advice !!! We have finally decided to make the move and open up our small B&B. We are coming over in 2 weeks time and have done the usual stuff...... website etc etc etc and have met with our Maire who has given us the B&B registration forms to complete for her to register us at her office. We intend to register on the AE scheme for tax purposes (will that get us our siret number ?) but are unsure if we need to do anything else to become "resident". We will be self funding initially from savings and are under pension age. I know there are things we will need lots of advice on, (luckily we have good freinds in the village and our Maire is very very supportive) we expect to have some headaches so any advice will be really appreciated. Thank you in advance for any input. Kind Regards Mel.
  9. Hi we found some in the "oriental" section of Carrefour, as previously said near all the chilli sauces etc. Hope you can find some. Mel.
  10. Hi, We may well be in a similar situation (i.e. having to sell our french house) BUT our situation is different in that we don't own a house in the UK and our french house is our only owned home. (We stay with patient relatives in the UK) and spend time in the house in France when we have time off work and can afford to go there for varying lengths of time. We have owned and renovated the house since 2000. How would capital gains apply in this situation ? And what counts as being resident in france to avoid CGT as this is our only owned home..............do we have to "live" there for a certain length of time? Maybe too many questions to answer in one go but thought I would ask. Thank you for any information. Best Wishes Mel x
  11. Looks lovely, you have done a great job, would love to see the rest of that fireplace !!! will keep an eye out for any further pictures.
  12. As "brucie" would say............"your my favourite". Great site Thanks. Mel.
  13. Thanks Benjamin.............lost all my brain cells today !!!
  14. Hello...................how rubbish am I !!!! Can someone confirm how to write 607 euros in words for a cheque I have to write. Is it Six Cent sept Euro ??? (Looks too simple (a bit like me !!!) Sorry to be so stupid........could look it up but thought this might be quicker !! Thank you.
  15. In my opinion.............AVOID FORMULE 1. I'm sure other's will have other experiences. We pre-booked our rooms on three occasions to find they had cocked up the bookings, over-booked or just not got them on their system. Tried the ETAP'S (Owned by the same company) after that and they seemed much more on the ball. Plus you do get on En-suite. Have fun. Mel.
  16. Hello, Sorry to hear your sad news, hope you will be able to remember all the good times. I showed the poem to my mum, who has M.S. She is in constant pain now, is unable to walk, has difficulty swallowing, can't see properly and is becoming incontinent. She said it's a pity we don't afford the same dignity and support to human beings. Makes you think !!!!! She sends her thoughts to you too about your sad loss. Kind regards Mel.
  17. Hi chicken, Whatever you decide to do I hope you enjoy your motor cycling. There are obviously some people on this forum who can't make a decent contribution or correct what they feel is mis-information without decending to abuse of other peoples contributions. I do apologise for them. Happy travelling. Best wishes Mel.
  18. Keep your wig on Mr Wiggy, I was only going on what I was told !!!This is what the law says in the uk..............don't know how this applies in france although as part of the EU it may well be the same. Motorcycle licence requirementsIf you have a provisional motorcycle licence, you MUST satisfactorily complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course. You can then ride on the public road, with L plates (in Wales either D plates, L plates or both can be used), for up to two years. To obtain your full motorcycle licence you MUST pass a motorcycle theory test and then a practical test. [Law MV(DL)R regs 16 & 68] If you have a full car licence you may ride motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW power output, with L plates (and/or D plates in Wales), on public roads, but you MUST first satisfactorily complete a CBT course if you have not already done so. [Law MV(DL)R reg 43] If you have a full moped licence and wish to obtain full motorcycle entitlement, you will be required to take a motorcycle theory test if you did not take a separate theory test when you obtained your moped licence. You MUST then pass a practical motorcycle test. Note that if CBT was completed for the full moped licence there is no need to repeat it, but if the moped test was taken before 1/12/90 CBT will need to be completed before riding a motorcycle as a learner. [Law MV(DL)R regs 42(1) & 69(1)] Light motorcycle licence (A1): you take a test on a motorcycle of between 75 and 125 cc. If you pass you may ride a motorcycle up to 125 cc with power output up to 11 kW. Standard motorcycle licence (A): if your test vehicle is between 120 and 125 cc and capable of more than 100 km/h you will be given a standard (A) licence. You will then be restricted to motorcycles of up to 25 kW for two years. After two years you may ride any size machine. Direct or Accelerated Access enables riders over the age of 21, or those who reach 21 before their two-year restriction ends, to ride larger motorcycles sooner. To obtain a licence to do so they are required to have successfully completed a CBT course pass a theory test, if they are required to do so pass a practical test on a machine with power output of at least 35 kW To practise, they can ride larger motorcycles, with L plates (and/or D plates in Wales), on public roads, but only when accompanied by an approved instructor on another motorcycle in radio contact. You MUST NOT carry a pillion passenger or pull a trailer until you have passed your test. [Law MV(DL)R reg 16] Moped licence requirements A moped MUST have an engine capacity not exceeding 50 cc, not weigh more than 250 kg and be designed to have a maximum speed not exceeding 31 mph (50 km/h). From June 2003 all EC Type Approved mopeds have been restricted to 28 mph (45 km/h). [Law RTA 1988 (as amended) sect 108] To ride a moped, learners MUST • be 16 or over • have a provisional moped licence • complete CBT training You MUST first pass the theory test for motorcycles and then the moped practical test to obtain your full moped licence. If you passed your driving test before 1 February 2001 you are qualified to ride a moped without L plates (and/or D plates in Wales), although it is recommended that you complete CBT before riding on the road. If you passed your driving test after this date you MUST complete CBT before riding a moped on the road. [Laws RTA 1988 sects 97(e) & 101 & MV(DL)R regs 38(4) & 43] Note. For motorcycle and moped riders wishing to upgrade, the following give exemption from taking the motorcycle theory test full A1 motorcycle licence full moped licence, if gained after 1/7/96 [Law MV(DL)R reg 42] Previous page / next page You and your bicycle Motor vehicle documentation and learner driver requirements Was this information useful
  19. Hi, I don't know about your particular scooter, but most scooters in the UK at 50cc can only go to a "maximum" of 30 miles per hour when driving with a full UK car drivers licence. I don't know if this is the same in France. I get my new one on Monday !!! Can't wait. Happy Scootering !!!! Mel.
  20. RE: Previous post...........Gardening visits What.............. No people looking for work in this area. I thought I would have had at least one reply or a suggestion where to look. If anyone missed the post, thought I would give it another go.I don't know if this is the right forum, but will give it a go. We are looking for a service/person to do our medium sized garden(about 200m2) while we are in the UK. We are in a small village between Bellac (87) and Droux (87). Our usual gardener is retiring (regrettably, as they were fantastic) they used to visit once a fortnight and cut the small lawn and do some weeding etc for an hour. We are looking for similar so that we don't return from the UK to a "jungle" Hope we can find someone via this site or any suggestions where to find someone very gratefully received. Thanks Mel. Thanks Mel.
  21. Hi, Sorry to show my ignorance, but what are these things ??? Never heard of any of them. Any info for me ? Thanks Mel.

  23. Hi LL, Can't get in to see the photo at the minute, but hope that if I come back in another life as a dog, that I get to come and live with you all. As you can see by my photo I have a "old man" staffie and he's gorgeous, the most placid and well behaved dog i've ever owned. Have fun with the gang. Mel.
  24. Hi LL, Sounds as if he's a very lucky boy, wish all dogs had such understanding new owners, glad to hear he's improving his "manners". Like you say things will improve over time as he gets more confident and self secure. Good luck to all of you. Mel P.S. Victoria has a great little episode about seperation anxiety and how to resolve it over a short period of time.............I think I'm getting obsessed with her now !! Best wishes
  25. Hi, Just been watching re-runs of "Its me or the dog". Victoria says that this is an issue of insecurity and terratorial marking. It usually appears when a dog is struggling to find out his role in the "pecking order". She suggests setting up very tight rules and regulations and a set daily routine for the dog and initially restricting the dog to a particualar area of the house and making sure that he "sees" you as the pack leader (please don't pee up any furniture though" !!!) Make sure he has regular walk and pee times at which point he must be highly praised, if you catch him in "mid-pee" make a loud squeeling noise and remove him from the area without any nice contact or stimulation from yourself. Do not wash any areas he has wet wth any bleach based products as this will only stimulate him to "re-mark". plain old warm water and a dash of washing up liquid. It is important that he does not "rule the roost" as he will continue to mark in order to show HIS authority. These were a few general principles she suggests but if you want more info, you can buy the book or watch re-runs on the telly.................I think her methods and rational for dog training is invaluable. (I'm not related to her !!!) Hope this helps a little. Good luck. Mel.
