1. Forget who is suggesting it and why The problem exists and when peoples lives are at stake what is the answer ? Somebody has to take them or let them die  The question of tribes fighting each other seems to be getting worse be it  Arab tribes and with Syria it is a tribal fight to the death here or  Black African tribes  Asian tribes  whoever . Do we  take the losers from these tribal battles or do we turn our backs  let them get on with it and watch them die on TV ?  Its not an easy one . Open the door and and perhaps any despot kicking off a war will expect us to take his  enemies  ......  What is the answer ?    One for the UN to discuss and every member to take her share maybe ?
 2.
Today the calm after the storms of yesterday but for how long? Stay safe everyone.
Unfortunately no calm in many Dorset and Hampshire homes near me this morning . Local radio reports many homes having lost power due to downed trees There are huge traffic holdups due to roads yet to be cleared of debris and  also floods . I feel for the old people in the New Forest many whom I know have had a difficult year through illness  They may not have their power restored today  ... I am lucky I have only lost fencing ...The power dipped many times last night but we still have it . Isle of Wight needles lighthouse recorded almost 100 mph wind so not surprised New Forest trees have gone down . It seems the Jet Stream is extra  fast now 300 MPH  dragging it all over from USA and Canada
 3.
"Interesting thread. Some people we know do declare the income to the UK but not to France!!" Very true Hereford and I suspect there are quite a few who don't declare it at all[blink].
Which raises the question  What  about mobile homes ? I know someone who has bought one and I think the site rents it out for him when he is not using it, I imagine his French bank account would show income from that . As for the site owners , how do they show their income is raised . Do they have to list every owner they act and rent out  for with a contribution for tax when their accountants deal with the sites  tax affairs ?   There may be people who have already paid tax to France when it should have gone to the UK ...
 4.  Those on the move today.....drive carefully ...stay safe ! http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1387756800
 5. And the same to you Wooly........Long drive ..I hope you and your family have an enjoyable Xmas together .
 6.

If they can get any money out of my kids and family for using my holiday home, I hope they let me into the secret? [:D]
I know how you feel Nick............I get mine to do the gardening and other jobs .
How?
Easy ........Tell them to get stuck in or a cats home gets the house !
 7. It seems the French authorities have been busy ensuring that they link my holiday home  and French bank account ownership with UK tax authorities . Does not apply to me as house is not rented out nor ever has been .But means form filling for both me and my wife as we both got one !!! Form states they receive information from governments  around  the world about property ownership and bank account details relating to those properties .  " We have information which indicates that you may own one or more properties overseas  that can impact on your tax liability if let out sold or disposed of . " Forms to be returned by 31 January 2014 with a warning that a compliance check into tax affairs may result if ignored . All part of reducing tax evasion and avoidance .
 8.
Well ofcourse, what else! TW+HT = G*, a very simple formula that they just love to stick to![:@] I keep asking my son if the parcel I have sent has arrived, but am met with the simple word 'greve' everytime I ask. Last night the unions were playing hell because the workers at the ship building yard have been asked to work an extra twenty minutes a day for the same pay, if they don't then the yard may not get the contract to build two new paquebots....... are they really so obtuse? Is it old age that makes me feel so angry with these unions, I cannot remember feeling quite so incensed when I was younger. *Transport Workers+ Holiday Time = Greve
Perhaps the unions don't read this sort of thing or if they do refuse to believe it . http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2013/12/17/340404/france-called-new-sick-man-of-europe/

Dave 21478 wrote :there are many, many people who take great delight in denouncing others simply because they can and it seems to please them to stir up official trouble for others even if they are far from clean themselves. This seems to be a very common thing to do wherever you are in France ... It results in people living in fear of saying or doing anything that may cause someone to pick up the phone and drop you in it The belief that someone may be doing better than they are ...even if not true   Seems to kick the denunciation gene into overdrive . The fear of even opening a shop door a moment before time to let customers waiting outside, in the cold ,to enter. Even causes fear of being reported by other shop owners who will claim unfair advantage  This results in staff and customers lined up looking at each other through a glass door watching the clock.. Its not a nice way to live your life IMO and causes people to choose their friends in France carefully .
 10. Xmas day we are being fed by daughter... Boxing day its open house with us for we think will be 12 to 14 ...plus dogs !  There is a gammon to cook that will go onto a buffet style laid  table .  Two are working one on a ward one in a bar and some driving  up from Bath .They can all come and go whatever time  they please and eat or go hungry as they see fit ..
 11.
Nick, We started watching the Cooking Channel to get away from it. David
Your place for dinner now is it ?
 12.
Good report on Fox news channel about the man who was "signing" for the deaf at Mandela's memorial service, seemed he'd acted out this scenario before, and although nothing to do with the "signing"  had been arrested several times. The storey obviously asked questions about South Africa's security arrangements as this guy had been standing next to several world leaders. Lot's of questions to be answered I think as it seems that already reports and papers involved in the mans history have disappeared.
I imagine it will not be long before he turns out to have disappeared as well

 14. It appears that the Hotel Industry in France and Spain is complaining about the numbers who are "renting " out second homes . http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2523474/Brits-holiday-homes-Spain-France-banned-renting-tourists.html One of the things that always irritated me about the people who live near my holiday home . Was their need to know who was staying in it when I was not there .  Only my family use it and the whole street knows them by now as they tell me they hear the children playing in the garden .  When I bought it years ago and was handed the keys the Notaire he said the house is now mine I can rent it out ! ...... Why do they assume  that we second home owners  MUST be making money out of them and MUST be avoiding paying French taxes . I am sure they think  "We would do it ...so they must be "
 15. Peter Hain  I noticed was out there :I did not see most of  Question Time from Jo'berg so can't comment on how much he participated. Whatever his contribution the BBC thought he was worth flying out at their expense just for it .. ..Business Class flights returning via Amsterdam ....
 16.
I wonder how many of them did some Christmas shopping ? Hoddy
Carvings of animals and top heavy women for all that's for sure !
 17.
Norman, I understand that you trained the guy that did the signing for the blind. Seems about right!!!
The guy has given an interview.... It appears he became ill  and confused when he saw angels appearing  in the stadium ... There is a lot Norman has been  very good at but arranging divine intervention by angels I think is a bit beyond  even his capabilities
 18.
I couldn't agree more with PaulT, Derek J and Hoddy's posts. I too had turned on the News at 23.00 that evening to see what havoc the floods might have brought about. I gave up after an hour. The BBC have sent out 'George', John Humphries, Clive Myrie and quite possibly others: the onsite journalists were perfectly capable of dealing with the coverage.
I read the BBC shipped out a staff of 150
 19. It may be quite some time  before the facts of just how much Mandela was personally responsible for, comes to light where the creation of the rainbow nation is concerned . Jo Slovo his Jewish communist friend I think was a very big driving force within the ANC. He may or may not have  been a high ranking officer in  the KJB as some claimed . I don't think the KGB  published their own  Who's Who when it comes to those on the payroll . But Slovo  would I believe along with Mandela who it was claimed at the time was a secret member of the communist party have been taking instruction from Moscow. As were the Communist party throughout Europe at the time .What influence did they have  on decisions that were made ? How were they  countered by the West ? There must be a lot of information still to come to light as to who actually did what and when before Mandela was released to ensure the peaceful path , that would result in the  change over, from white minority to black majority rule ..Was it all down to Mandela  as people tend to believe today  ? I think there is a lot more to be discovered about this man  before the rush to make Mandela a Saint  starts . Now he has passed on after time a lot we did not know about him  may just come to light . .
 20. Pigs are let loose on the New Forest to eat acorns that can kill the ponies .... People pinch the pigs .....(How they catch one beats me } but some pigs are not happy being protected by the boys in blue with a dog ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKBnijzk9sQ

Or maybe Mrs DD's next project could be one of those explosive things that covers the perpetrator with indelible purple gunk? There was a spring loaded flat metal thing he had that held a plastic cap banger that went off with a hell of a thump ! He used to hide it up under phones in filing cabinets in books under peoples tea mugs ....  Guaranteed to cause her to change her underwear .
