  1. Is this what you are looking for ? The Elision The elision takes place when a word finishing in a vowel is followed by a word beginning in a vowel. Grammatical words that end in -e lose it before a vowel. In writing, this -e is replaced by an apostrophe: Je viens d'un (de + un) pays lointain. J'attends (= je + attends) d'avoir l'occasion The vowel -a can be dropped when it is in a personal pronoun before a verb beginning in a vowel: Pierre aime Marie becomes Pierre l'aime (la + aime). For the lexical words, -e disappears phonetically and only the vowel that begins the following word is pronounced. The spelling does not change: Quatre amis

  3. Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you are a gazelle or a lion, when the sun comes up you had better start running.

  6. The provision fire resisting doors, walls and ceilings is a complex subject. Whether or not you need to provide them depends on many things. ie How many floors the building has, the number of staircase(s), travel distances to fresh air or to a protected route(s), the types of furnishings and fabrics, the number of bedrooms providing sleeping accommodation for paying guests. Provision of fixed and/or portable firefighting equipment. Fire detection systems. These are just a few of the considerations. If you are in the UK go to your local Fire Station (Fire Prevention Officer) They will be able to provide the practical information you are requesting. If you live in France talk to the Pompiers. Although the laws are different the basic principles are the same.
  7. Football off side rule constantly baffles fans, players and referees – yet really it’s quite straightforward! A player is offside if :- He is nearer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second last player – except on alternate Saturdays when in addition the second last player must be facing in an easterly direction. A player is not offside if :- He is in his own half of the field, Or He is level with the second last opponent, Or The player, opponent and referee form an obtuse triangle as perceived by an imaginary linesman positioned on the Celestial Meridian.

  11. My old Carte de sejour expired November 2008. I was told by the Prefecture that it was not necessary for me to replace it. I asked if I could renew it as I would prefer to carry one rather than my UK Passport. I was given a new Carte de sejour valid for 10 years.
  12. I thought I heard something that day. If it happens again in the future may I politely suggest that your husband tries to utilise these sudden ''outbursts'' as a form of turbo propulsion for gaining greater speed across the ice. BE WARNED do not attempt a ''double salco'' as you let off !!
