1. I find it wonderful that the companies complain about the workers going on strike, then immediately put their prices up, I know I'm easily confused, but higher prices never stopped a shortage.  It's about time  Governments stopped this blatant profiteering.
2.
I have a deposit (fixed interest bond) there and this impending decision has been influencing my thoughts as to whether to renew it (it comes to maturity on 1st March). I read that if one renewed before the end of the government guarantee one was still guaranteed for the rest of the life of that particular investment vehicle. So do we know what the actual date for this ending of the guarantee will be?
The Treasury reports that it will be 24th  May 2010. "But savers with fixed-rate bonds will retain 100pc protection until the bond matures", a Rock spokesman said.
3. This report is from moneysavingexpert.com Government-owned Northern Rock is scrapping its 100% savings guarantee, it announced this morning. "Northern Rock chief executive Gary Hoffman says: "This is another positive step in the right direction and the decision reflects our good progress and the strong capital position of Northern Rock. "The Company is returning to a level playing field and our savers will enjoy exactly the same level of protection, under FSCS, as customers of other UK banks and building societies." Funny how they manage to put a spin on everything, so the fact that all of our money is not safe anymore is good news? Cheers Gary, I'm really pleased about that.   [:P]
4.
I couldn't put an exact date on it but the daily service has gone since we've been living here (5.5 years).
We bought our house the same time as you did Coops, and although we've never used the airport that much I was sure that there was a daily service in the summer, there you go; old age is catching up with me. As for Pierre's comment "a tent in the middle of a field" , I think you are being a little unkind, I reckon it's quite a smart  for a small airport, although I must agree about the air force planes, Still you don't get that kind of entertainment everywhere? [:D]
5. Unfortunately the mike boom in the left of the frame gives the game away. Still great picture. [:D]
6.
At least hieroglyphics, once decifered, are perfectly comprehensible. The real message is:  expect nothing and you won't be disappointed![;-)]
Absolutely Sweet, but being a simple soul all I ask for from my "betters" is fairness and clarity. Maybe that is why I'm simple?  [:(]
7. Just been looking at timetables for July/August for Ryanair from Tours Airport and noticed that they don't fly every day. Is it my imagination, but didn't they used to fly every day in the peak season.
8. That looks and  sounds like a lawyers pension fund booster, what ever happened to the plain English they promised us. The fourth paragraph might just as well be written in hieroglyphics
9.
Mrs Tiger Woods might also be a front runner, might she not?
Although I must agree with you sweet17, I do think the money might have a bearing on that, rather like Mrs Terry ?? If Mr Woods was at it as much as they say? you can't tell me she didn't know something was going on. And of course Bernie's wife  thought he was handsome. [:D]
10.
No doubt she would have given you a good old ticking off too for your use of the greengrocer's apostrophe [:)]
Not for the first time Will, you are absolutely right. [:D]
11. Will wrote:            "Readers Digest was the original example of 'dumbing down' - presenting proper works of literature in a format for the cerebrally challenged with short attention spans." Well I'm afraid my old Mum if she was still alive would  have given you a very short sharp answer Mr Will.I think your comment  is the height of pomposity. OK RD wasn't my cup of tea , but lots of peoples Mum's and Dad's liked it. By the way in case you are in any doubt the second word of my Mum's verbal offering would have been," off " [:P]
12.
Well, as an ordinary bloke, who has spent his life honestly (excluding the odd bit of speeding in my youth [:)]), always worked to pay my way and paid all my taxes, I have no sympathy with these people whatsoever. Screw em for every penny. .
I'm with you Bb. [B]        When I started work and was complaining about paying tax an old guy I was working with said "think yourself lucky son that you earn enough to pay tax!"
13. There's nothing like an old storey rehashed to suit a political situation for which ever side. The difference today is the press seems to have a mission, not to report the news, but to make the news. The classic example is,  the only real "Old Labour" newspaper the Daily Herald was taken over by the totally right wing Sun. The Sun now changes it's politics with the seasons, purely for circulation figures. Give them their due the Telegraph has been consistent ( bit like Norm) [:D] Immigration * has always been with us and always will, immigrants will always take full advantage of the country they settle in, that's why they settle there, to make a better life for themselves and their family's. As for people with fat pensions getting French fuel allowance are you sure? If the pension is that good I don't think they would qualify.  *Nothing is new see the link below http://www.sussex-academic.co.uk/sa/titles/history/GooseLuu.htm

Chessie wrote: "So burying your head in the sand and saying that you don't believe the Report simply because you don't like the papers which are reporting is - is just really rather childish - you can't continue to stick your head in the sand and pretend the problems do not exist.   And the problems were caused deliberately and with evil intent.    No government out of sheer stupidity could have done the damage and destruction caused by this load of Commie Traitors. I don't want to start arguments - but just dismissing a Report simply because of the newspapers in which the Report has appeared does not seem to be very open-minded....." NickP wrote:  "Whether I would believe the truth when it's presented by the Torygraph is up for debate."   I would suggest that you read what was written, not what you thought was written. By the way nice to know that you and Gordon are on speaking terms  [:P]
15. Whether I would believe the truth when it's presented by the Torygraph is up for debate. We had a conservative government in the 50's who introduced mass immigration to staff London Transport. Since 1951 we have had 35 years of Conservative and 24 years of Labour governments neither have implemented an immigration policy to benefit  the British population or the immigrants who came to settle here. [:(]
16. We travel from the LeMans/Tour area to West Sussex and back frequently.  Because of the fiddling and faffing  around with disembarkation from the ferries we use the tunnel every time, a longer drive but  minimum delay for customs, and when the train arrives straight off and onto the motor way. I am terrified that if the ferry services don't get their act together a lot of them will disapear and the tunnel will become a monopoly for car traffic. Then we all know what will happen to prices.

Absolutely DR if the British can't argue among themselves over sport the world would be a very boring place. But as you infer all the bickering and banter gets put behind us when the British Lions play. Andy Powell, silly boy, Banning him from the team I think is a little harsh, if he broke the law, yes let the law deal with him. After all if misbehaviour was a banning offence England wouldn't have a soccer team  [:D]
18.
Who cares ? This forum is Living FRANCE So where is the relevance?
We do Norman, and just in case your old eyes are playing you up; this part of the forum is called sport, leisure and pastimes. France is part of the six nations tournament which is for countries who play rugby. Next question?  [:P]
19. Martin , On the back of my policy it states that this certificate is evidence of a motor insurance policy which satisfies the compulsory motor insurance requirements of any member country of the European union. The notice is in French/German/Italian/Spanish. A couple of years ago I spoke to my insurance company about issuing green card and they said "it's not necessary" I asked how long I could use my insurance abroad and they said "well there is no limit, but if you are going to be abroad for more than 90 days, give us a ring and let us know." I have been stopped by the Gendarmes a couple of times including being Breathalysed ( Brilliant, I hadn't had a drink for two days[:D]) and they have never asked to see my insurance or even my driving licence.
20. Distemper is made from powdered chalk or lime and size, it sometimes contained lead and cannot be washed down, to paint over it you have to remove all traces of the distemper with water, very messy. I can't think of any reason to use it today or any other day
21. Right answer Derek, but offered in the wrong way. What you should have said is "he has the same accent as Shane Howarth and Matt Cardey"  [:P]
22. OK Derek I surrender, unfortunately being an ex Ice hockey player I never was any good with rules, thats why I played hockey where you punched first and asked the ref what you'd done after [:D]
23.
And the Italians have many players who are not Italian born, so are not a truly Italian team. But they are a much improved team and England were utter rubbish. By the way, you can't score just one point in rugby.
Funny enough I don't think all the English team are English.  [:P]  and although you can't score just one point, you can score 101
24. Derek, My first reaction was the same as yours, but after what happened I thought lets have a look? and thats when I found the IRB rules. The rule on the ball going straight out is that the restart becomes   the choice of the receiving team, a scrum back or a line out. Now, as to end of play maybe it is interpretation. After all. players are supposed to stay on their feet, scrum halves must not feed the scrum, and it happens all the time and sometimes they get away with it sometimes they don't. An Irish forward got away with a terrible trip on a French player yesterday and stayed on the pitch, Welsh player against England gets sin binned, different referee different interpretation. Still it gives us something to talk about on a bitterly cold day while we are waiting for todays game. Got to go as I have to tell the wife to get some more wood in for the fire [Www]  cheers mate.
25. Well Derek I could  be proved wrong, but I offer in my defence the following from the IRB rules, maybe of course they are  they are open to interpretation, I would welcome advice on that point. The referee has the power to end the match at any time, if the referee believes that play should not continue because it would be dangerous. (e) If time expires and the ball is not dead, or an awarded scrum or lineout has not been completed, the referee allows play to continue until the next time that the ball becomes dead. The ball becomes dead when the referee would have awarded a scrum, lineout, an option to the non-infringing team, drop out or after a conversion or successful penalty kick at goal. If a scrum has to be reset, the scrum has not been completed. If time expires and a mark, free kick or penalty kick is then awarded, the referee allows play to continue. (f) If time expires after a try has been scored the referee allows time for the conversion kick to be taken. IRB rules, courtesy of IRB
