1.
I had not realised that civil unrest in the UK was centrally organised - let alone run from NSY. Though this may explain why in France it always seems to be handled so much more efficiently.
Plus, practice makes perfect.  Though I would not rule a genetic component.
 2.
Some people don't dare speak French because of their accent, but believe me, an English accent when speaking French sounds very charming to us French people!!
If speaking to a person of the French persuasion in your best "French" accent and they fail to understand, try speaking French with a Terry Thomas accent.  Once they know where you're coming from they understand perfectly.  The Queen's and Edward Heath's accents are suitable alternatives.
 3. I knew there was something making me feel uneasy - now I know, it was the lack of strikes this week.  Let's hope it gets back to normal soon.
 4. For those who missed it, see the previous post. Please do not repeat any of the funny lines here as it will break copyright.  We prosecute.
 5. I have an unlimited number of these genuine BBC comedy programmes available from just 10p. Hurry - only available for 6 days. Top Quality BBC Comedy Programmes Going Cheap

 7. She could perhaps save some money by breast feeding.  [I]
 8. BTW, the services run by Alis at the Aire de la Dentelle on the A28, exit 19 Alençon north, are the best that I've seen anywhere in France.  Honestly.  They are excellent - spotlessly clean loos, bright, airy concourse, three choices of bar/cafe/restaurant, very well stocked gift shop with regional produce and souvenirs.  Only drawback is you might get dizzy, lost and disorientated on leaving due to the twisty route out.
 9. I've read the full pdf file contract (French version) and it conforms with the terms set out in English on the site.  I can't find any catches.  NB  The "reduction on tolls on a section of motorway of your choice" only applies to one section between Rouen and Alençon (but that's not the main attraction anyway - I'm more interested in the fact it's free to use). The badge (like those from other suppliers) is valid for all French motorway tolls except the road tunnels at Mont Blanc and Fréjus. If you lose or break the télébadge then you have to pay for it (35€ currently) and will then be given a replacement. They reserve the right to change the terms and conditions but you will be informed if that happens and you can cancel any time you wish. You have to pay tolls monthly by direct debit. You can cancel at any time with no penalty but you do have to return the doofer by recorded delivery.
 10.
I've got the Alis deal. No upfront or monthly charge. Some small discount on the Alis specific autoroute sections (tbh I don't actually use any of their sections). The only downside for some may be that they will only bill a french bank account.
That's a great deal, DerekJ.  At first reading sounds too good to be true, so I'll read it again!  If it reads the same second time around, I'm going to turn in my existing doofer and get this one instead - especially as we're on an Alis motorway section.  Thanks for the link.
 11. Thanks, Clair, but I'd rather spend the next week with my head in a bucket of cement. [:D]
 12.
Given that it was on all 5 French channels, and therefore could not be avoided I am fairly confident that the 15 million quoted is an understatement, either that or a new baby boom is on its way.
We dodged Sarko.  [:)] We watched an ancient Clint Eastwood/Charlie Sheene film on TF3 instead (The Rookie).  I think Sarko was only on TF1, TF2 and M6 simultaneously at that time.
 13.
Arguably European France doesn't really possess one - maybe head for Guadalupe or Martinique.
If you mean doesn't possess any region with a "nice" climate all year round, I'd go along with that, Ian.   Not sure I'd fancy Guadaloupe or Martinique either, mind.  [:)] Cue people arguing for their various regions' climates/microclimates.  Or see previous threads on subject and copy the same over.  [8-|]
 14.
I read the equivalent in French somewhere only a few days ago, but I can't for the life of me remember where........[Www]
There are quite a few examples around - like this one.
L'orthographe est importante et je le consède très volontié. 15.
We never seem to cope when we get  a bit of snow but there again do we just like to moan!
In that respect, please don't expect it to be any different in France!  The French, too, like a drama and a catastrophe to moan about and are useless at dealing with anything out of the ordinary.  [:D]
 16. Good picture highlighting Sarko's nasty little habit of pointing his finger at people.  How rude.  [:P]
 17. If you go to this page http://www.6juin1944.com/6juin09/index.php and click on the individual days, you'll see details of various ceremonies in the immediate disembarcation areas for 2009.  Locations, times and brief descriptions. There is a more comprehensive list Liberation commemorative events here: http://visitnormandy/d-day-normandy-liberation-ceremonies-and-events/ Based on this http://www.normandiememoire.com/NM60Anglais/resultat_fr.php?&tri=date_desc but with irrelevant events removed and a translation into English.
 18. One in the wife's name, one in mine.  Each person in the household is allowed up to 15,300 in a Livret A.
Vous êtes mariés avec 2 enfants. Vous pouvez donc ouvrir jusqu'à 4 Livrets A avec un plafond total de 61 200 € pour votre famille (15300 € maximum pour un Livret A).
So when one account has a "special" on for deposits made between this date and that date, we switch money from the other one to it.  They're useful for ready cash which also earns interest.
 19. If you hold different French savings accounts with ING, CIC and similar and switch money around as and when special rates are available, you can do better than a single Livret A.
 20. This is building to an excellent article. Chez Fano at Alençon is a stunner.  Stylish, but friendly and cosy, with really helpful and willing service.  Multiple award winner (Gault Millau, Tradition du Terroir) with menus from 15€.
 21. Wow!  That's a real new one!  [blink] Of course, anyone who knows me would also know better than to ask me for money!  [:D]
