1.

I don't follow horse racing as such, but will watch it occasionally on the tele.  However, I do try and watch Kauto Star as I once spent a few very enjoyable hours with Kauto's owner, Clive Smith, on the golf course.
I take it then Derek that you won?
Not exactly Nick. I was caddying for him.  Since my (early) retirement I've done a bit of caddying and gone round with quite a few interesting people. Clive was very polite and pleasant and it was a good day spent with him.  Actually he ended up making a few phone calls whilst we were out as he was in the middle of selling one of his golf courses. Not a good day for Kauto though... he never looked that comfortable from the off to my untutored eye.

3. We got a letter in the UK  from our French neighbours this morning postmarked in Labastide Murat on 11/01. So pretty fast.
4. I've never seen a longwheelbase version of the Lightweight.  Have you any photos? I always had a hankering for the LR 101 Forward Control  but never quite got around to it.
5. I'm not known for being very forgiving and some might think me a bit to the right of Attila the Hun.... However, in this case I find myself broadly in agreement with PPP. I totally agree that what he did was an act of extreme lunacy and highly dangerous, and as such he should be severely penalised. What I have difficulty with is the inconsistency of sentencing. Just look at the number of reports you see of scrotes who are terrorising their neighbourhoods that end up with an ASBO, or deferrred sentence.  Or George Michael with his repeated drugs/driving offences - no less dangerous to life and limb.  This seems a regular pattern. Until PPP posted the link to ROA I had no knowledge to the differences between 30 months and 32 months. Bottom line, do a I want to see an 18 year old have the rest of his life totally ruined for a moments lunacy? Well, even with my Attila the Hun hat on I can't feel comfortable with that.  I have to think back at some of the idiotic things I did at that age and how lucky I was never to have "been caught". With the application of a 30 month sentence some level of redemption and hope would have been available to him. Yes, a vindictive sentence I think. A bit off track but.....  I still feel sad about the James Bulger case...  not just the obvious sadness over the treatment and death of poor James but also over the lives of the perpetrators - Robert Thompson and Jon Venables. - two 10 year olds whose lives effectively ended as a result. Yes they were evil and I make no case in their defense but it saddens me.
6. I used to have a Lightweight with a 3.5L Range Rover engine shoehorned in. Great fun but very thirsty.
7.
I like French address system, normally only requires two lines and little writing. Very efficient.
Yes but....  I'm always amazed that we ever receive anything in the countryside given that there is so little information within the address.  It seems to rely on local knowledge.
8.
........but then why should there be a need for a backfill? Europe needs to stop being involved in American 'wars'.
Q, agreed but just commenting on the current situation where we are still the US puppet.
9. If that's what he really said and meant let's put it to the test.  Pull all British military out and let France provide the backfill.
10. I had a Cherokee with the VM diesel engine as a company car many years ago. The most unreliable car I've ever had. The recurring fault (among many others) was the oil pressure sensor physically failing and dumping the contents of the sump all over the road.  It stranded us twice.. on the autobahn in Germany and down in Cornwall.... but may other times. I had the Jeep area rep meet with me at the dealers... supposed special inspection.. and it still failed. It resulted in the Leasing company who ran our company car scheme taking it back early. A piece of junk. [:@]
11.
Nobody would happier than me to see second home owners leave France, nor to see Ryanair stop the flights which have contributed to the infestation.
Keep taking those happy pills.. ...   they seem to be working.[6]
12. I'm not a fan of RealPlayer. I've always found it very intrusive and invasive. But it it works for you that's good.
13. There have been a few YouTube videos that I wanted to have downloaded on my laptop and investigated a few options. In the end I opted for Easy YouTube Video Downloader I've used it a few times now (with Firefox) and it seems to work very well. Two of the videos were over 1 hour long... cycling classic videos plus some Tom Petty. Just a thought in case you're interested.
14. Couldn't agree more.  I used to work at Hursley so you can probably guess who for![:)]
15. I quite agree Judith (I was thinking of posting something similar). I used to work nearby to Winchester and sometimes popped in for evensong. Always very moving. The cathedral is another one of England's gems.
16. Building evacuations, lack of de-icer... Not a good story for those screwed up as a result.
17. Thanks for the reminder.  We are going to watch it on BBC2 at 18:45 UK time. Wonderful singing, wonderful architecture. Always a beautiful experience. The start of Christmas for me.
18.
The problem is not that VC dislikes the Murdock Media - many share that view.  The problem is that VC, as a Minister of the Crown, was going to be the final arbiter as to whether or not Murdock could take over the rest of Sky. He even acknowledged during the "interview" that he could not politicise this. So he was aware of his duty but chose to "...speak his mind......" to two complete strangers he thought were potential electors in his constituency.  In doing so, he indicated that his mind was made up before the OFCOM report had arrived, upon which he was supposed to make his decision.
Exactly
19. Cable must be an imbecile. He had no need to make any mention of the Murdoch situation and he let his mouth and ego run away with him. With his experience it is a massive understatement to say that "he should have known better".
20. I can't help but be sceptical over how much this was a slipup and how embarrassed Cable is. I can't help but suspect this is simply him playing politics, keeping himself popular with LibDem voters and the party in general.
21. Can you play the CD without trying to import it into iTunes? For example... if you are doing this on a Windows based PC you will almost certainly have Windows Media Player available to you. Try opening that and then opening the CD. It may be that your CD/DVD drive has a problem.
22.
To get back to the original post, I just heard that the UK Border Agency is going to appeal. Hoddy
I thought we were still discussing the original post which is entitled.... What do you do???????
23. In fairness to Michael Gove I have received replies to both my previous emails. I guess in this particular case one shouldn't have high hopes of any effective action but if you don't try then you can be sure nothing will happen. Other than a few minutes of ones time it costs nothing to write. One thing is for sure, just complaining on websites won't produce any action. It lets us get it off our chests but that's about it.
24. If you are still UK based I'd suggest that you write to your MP expressing your views. The Write to them website is useful if you're not sure where to write. I'm a member of a motorbike website where everyone is up in arms about this and this has a prompted a mass write your MP action.
25.
Dave feels the same, not holding my breath[Www]  /cameron-anger-over-deportation-ruling-
Words are cheap. It's down to Cameron to actually do something about it.... not just this case but countless other examples.  I'm waiting to see what sort of evasive, wishy-washy reply I get from my MP, Michael Gove.  To quote JJ "I'm not holding my breath".
