1. That's what I did Martin - some years ago back in England. There was (still is I think) a Scandinavian satellite at 1 west that I aligned my dish up on - it then needed a few careful 'tweaks' to get the arc scribing correctly. I couldn't possibly do a set up from a distance though and I'm a fair way from the op so perhaps someone nearer will be able to help. Tim
2.
But not when you're watching a programme. I had Austar (same as sky but in Australia) and the remote controls were exactly the same as the sky ones. But you could be watching a programme on one channel, then at the same time scroll through to see what else is on, press the i button and get info on any other programme on any other channel at any other time. It was so easy and so useful. No going through other menus and not being able to hear the current programme you are watching. There is no reason why sky can't programme this feature in. Stupid sky. Still what do you expect from a company that thinks football was invented in 1992.
You used to be able to do that with UK Sky boxes - until four or five years ago, I think, then an upgrade to the software removed it  - I'm not sure why now. I always thought it was a retrograde step. I wonder if the forthcoming Freesat boxes will be able to do it Tim
3. I'm with Ernie - I have seen this on a Freeview box in the UK but not a Sky box (which is what we are presuming is playing up here). The Freeview box incidentally was not on it's way out though -  a software update sorted it out. That problem shouldn't apply to a Sky box - assuming it's got all it's updates. Tim
4. Well, it would help if you'd said what operating system you are using, but assuming it's Windows XP then there are a few ways depending on how many you have to do. Maybe the simplest way is to just open the photo you want to transfer - right click the mouse button and assuming your memory stick is plugged in, you should see your stick in the drop down menu - you can then transfer a copy directly. You can probably do a whole file of pictures in this way but that will depend on how you are storing your photos. The way I like to do it is to have a half size screen showing the photos and the other half of the screen of the memory stick - then just 'drag and drop' them from one to the other. There are other ways and I'm sure others may suggest them.   Good luck - Tim
5. A quick question - my neighbour has just come home with a Live box and I'm sure to be asked to get it going when her line is activated - I did a couple last year, but one thing I meant to find out - do they have an inbuilt firewall - as my Netgear does? Tim
6. Glad you've found it to be useful. It's certainly made my machines run more quickly - especially in the shutdown time. I had been searching the internet quite a while a year or so ago, reading all about long and lingering shutdowns on XP. Mine was taking up to nearly a minute to close down. I started playing about with various suggestions and then across AWC - that did it for me.
7. OK Clair - I'll pass that info on to my neighbour. Thanks for your help - Tim
8. Thanks Clair - at your suggestion we had a quick look at the Neuf website, but at the moment, we can't see a similar deal as far as speed is concerned as  France Telecom. It's certainly given my neighbour something to think about though - and me, I was pretty convinced that she would have great difficulty in finding an ADSL provider who takes cheques and bet her €5 that she wouldn't - I may have to pay up. This is especially hard on me as I never bet money on anything, but I was so convinced.[+o(]   Thanks again Clair
9. Does anybody know of a Broadband/ADSL provider who will deal with monthly payments by cheque rather than direct debit? I have a neighbour who refuses to do DD at all. Regards - Tim
10.
I thought I may try this programme Timco, but I'm a bit concerned I'll miss deleting the privacy  sweep - is it clearly marked somewhere ?
Yes, it is clearly marked - once loaded the programme will start up - first thing to do is click on the 'options' menu and go to 'update' - you can then download the latest info - once done you will see on the page the list of the things the programme will check out - there are 7 - the privacy sweep is the 6th - you can't miss it - honest [:)]   Tim
11. One programme I've mentioned here before that I've found to be quite effective when trying to sort out this sort of isue is Advanced Windows Care V2. It's a free download from the Iobit.com website. (I have no connection with this site) It will check spyware, security, registry, the system itself, the start up programmes and cleans out any junk files. I've installed it on quite a few computers over the last two years - several of them were heading for the bin because they had slowed down so much - and they've all been given a new lease of life after running the programme. I usually don't do the privacy sweep at the moment because it removes all your website log in details, but I keep that under review. It's worth giving it a try and if you do, you will be surprised how much it finds, especially on the first run. I'm using it on XP and Vista. I should say, don't forget to update the programme after downloading it and remember to update before running. regularly. Regards - Tim
12. Yes, as said in a previous post - effectivly no significant change in the short term - so DON'T PANIC.
13. Yes, I can confirm it will work - I have a couple of XP machines hard wired to the modem, so they can share any one of three printers connected to them. The Vista laptop has no problem printing to any of these printers providing ( and this may be the crucial bit) the main computer is switched on - i.e. the machine the printer is connected to. Sorry if this was too obvious, but I'm not there looking at the connections. Regards - Tim P.S Wireless printing (the name of the thread) can, of course, be done without having to have the main computer on but this requires a piece of kit to make the printer wireless and is a slightly different story - or is it? Perhaps you meant that??
14.
I believe that the Freesat cards, unlike subscription ones, are not tied to the box. Thus it could be registered in the UK , even on someone else's box, and then brought over. I have a couple of spare ones for this purpose and was able to use one successfully in my spare box.
That's correct - only the premium channels have the card married to the box. Tim
15. Sky cannot tell whether you are in France or not from the box itself - they may be able to tell, if they are bothered, from the telephone. Using a UK mobile should be ok - I have a friend who has recently activated a card this way - the only problem being that sky were so slow that she used up over £15 of credit on the call. Tim
16. I hope someone may have some experience of Altitude Telecom. A friend has just e-mailed me from the Calvados Department saying that her remote villagee is just about to be given Haute Debit internet. I've had a quick look at the Altitude website, but it's going to take a while to work my way through it, so what she would like to know is what extra equipment will she need to get access to this service, the costs involved and will she be able to keep her current ISP. I suspect she will get some more info from Altitude shortly, but it may be helpful to be armed with some of the information sooner rather than later. Thanks for any help - Tim
17. Yes, and the Advanced Windows Cleaner I suggested would have shown you everything in the start up and let you decide what you want. Anyway - I'm glad you're sorted out. Tim
18. Perhaps you mean 'Riviera Radio' - now you mention it that does seem to ring a bell ( not sure whether pun intended or not). I agree with you entirely Martin - Tom's shows were hard work for me - interspersed with absolute gems, but always interesting. Loving Awareness?? Got the album on vinyl - bought at a Radio Caroline roadshow when it was first released - Ronan was there - never got him to sign it though - my feeling at the time was that it was probably 'not cool' to ask him. I stand by my decision. Horace Bachelor Ernie?? Was that Caroline or Fab 208?? Tim Edit - overlapping posts - I think the 0199 was deliberate - they waited along time to get their EPG listing - mainly, as I understand it that just as they had raised the money to get on the EPG, Sky tripled the amount required, but again, this is mostly hearsay.
19.
Radio Caroline, I had no idea that they were still going?  How well I remember listening to Caroline in the 70's.  The Mi Amigo, Ross Revenge, loving awareness (never did understand quite what that was all about), Stimorol (sp???) gum, P0 box something or other ... Playa d'Aro, Province of Gerona, Spain. Ah, what it was to be young [:)]
Yes Cat, they're still going - in a way, anyway - there are some around who say that because they are not still broadcasting from ' The International Waters of the North Sea' then it's not really Caroline. I have some sympathy with this view, having visited the Mi Amigo - before it sank, of course, and the Ross Revenge. But the possibilities of a radio ship returning to broadcast from outside the territorial limit were pretty much stopped by government legislation in the late eighties - but they continue on the internet at RadioCaroline.co.uk and satellite - they are on 'Sky channel' 0199 if you have a Sky digi box or tune any digi box connected to a dish pointing at 28.2 east to 11390 V 27500 2/3 and you will hear Caroline again. I think it's good that they're still around. Tim
20. Yes, I did have a listen from time to time, but we had UK visitors over the weekend which meant lots of 'out and about' and catering. I haven't heard anything from Tom for quite some time now - not sure what he's up to. I have to admit my listening has spread a little more these days - but I do like to listen to something that surprises me - FIP here in France never fails to do that almost on a daily basis. Brian Matthew on a Saturday morning can usually do it as well and certain guys on Caroline manage to dig something out I've not heard for years. All other UK based music radio, for me, is now a waste of time - far too predictable and safe. What a waste - as someone once said. Tim
21. Glad you found the problem Martin. We've talked about Sky boxes and their useless signal indications before. Out of interest, whilst shifting a couple of pieces of kit around I took a quick look at the menu on one of my Sky boxes here and this one insists that I have no signal at all!! Bit odd really as I'm using it to listen to Radio Caroline at the moment.[8-)]   Tim
22. Un petit tweak is almost certainly in order - the trouble is if you are using a Sky box it's almost impossible to set up a dish to any degree of accuracy. I noticed when installing a dish some time ago that the skew was more critical on some transponders than others. I didn't particularly notice the BBC Parliament transponder being more fussy than others (it's this transponder that's now also being used for News 24 and radio) though - it always seemed to be True movies or something like it. That's where I would start though, as at least you can normally do that without moving the dish. It'll probably be tipping down tomorrow Martin. Tim
23.

Try installing this - Advanced Windows Care Free edition - from the iobit.com website. I have no connection with this site or company. It's not a 'cure all' for all he possible problems with your machine, but it's certainly worth a try. For your own security it also creates a restore point just in case of any problems.
It sounds as though this product might replace such programs as CCleaner and Spybot; if so it would suit my grandchildren. I have just spent a few days 'cleaning up' their computers whilst in the UK and I should be very happy to find a one-stop solution to their problems. Will this product work alongside others? Sue
Well, I use it in addition to Spybot and Ad Aware and alongside AVG Anti Virus Free. I  also have CCleaner on one of my XP machines, so I wouldn't say that I would use it instead of anything else, but as well as the others. The programme also lets you edit your start up programmes so you can see what is going on when you switch on. I use this with a little caution as you can be a bit over zealous. It does need to be updated, but this is simply done. Tim
24. Try installing this - Advanced Windows Care Free edition - from the iobit.com website. I have no connection with this site or company. Over the last few years I've installed it on all my Windows machines, also many many other friends and families machines as well, all with great success. It never fails to give your machine a good 'once over' where it checks for spyware (yes, I know other programmes do this, but they don't all always find the same things) it gives the registry a check, it also does a system optimisation and also removes junk files - it will also do a security sweep, but I've turned that off for the moment as it removes your log in details - cookies. Recently a friend was about to put her elderly machine in the bin - I suggested she tried this programme and she's been back in contact saying that it's given the old thing a new lease of  life. It's not a 'cure all' for all he possible problems with your machine, but it's certainly worth a try. For your own security it also creates a restore point just in case of any problems. If you do try it, let me know how you get on. Tim
