1. Thanks for that Pickles. It seems worse than we expected (CGT) if we were to sell our French home. Which makes the other option of selling our UK home and moving to France a more attractive proposition. The worry would be if we decided at some stage to return to the UK would there be retribution?
2. My wife and I have owned a second home in France for 18 years. We are both retired and face the possibility of having to sell our French house in the future , as logistics will inevitably start to take their toll. The situation regarding CGT (as UK taxpayers), as we see it , is 18% of the gain less the couples allowance (around £20k) making a tax bill in region of £54k. If we decided to sell up here in the UK and move permanently to France , are we right in thinking there would be no CGT? (UK and France) If so the next question is how long would we have to reside in France before considering moving back to the UK without incuring the wrath of the tax authorities? I know this may seem a little cynical to some members , but we are only trying to consider legal options available to us.
3. Very interesting article , from another second home owner who has struggled initially but now after 6 years am just starting to feel confident in opening , maintaining and closing the pool. Just one observation , you state " I should also say that the system I have has automatic pH control. This uses a probe to test pH and if it gets too high (Chlorine will raise the pH) it doses Sulphuric Acid to bring the pH down. I did try Hydrochloric Acid but this is horrible stuff that gives off noxious fumes – at least Sulphuric Acid is fumeless – or appears to be." I thought that increased cholrine levels will reduce the pH. Anyway its good to see someone get to grips with the complexities of pool maintenance. Well done.
4. Do you live rurally?Farmers use them for all sorts of things.Holding down covers on silo piles mainly. Maybe they have been delivered to the wrong address , seems strange someone as dumped them on what is obviously a private garden.
5. Is it a fuse tripping or the earth leakage differential trip (the main fuse usually slightly larger or sometimes on its own away from the sub fuses).
6. Presumably when all this as died down they may want to visit in the future. Why not offer to "hold" their deposit for such a possibility
7. I think I'll be voting for the Icelandic Volcanic Ash Party. They've done more to solve the Immigration problems in the UK than Labour have done in the last 13 years!
8. Talking to a guy who was restocking the "British" shelf at Intermarche (now Carrefour) at Prayssac and he said he rented the space for his own stock.Maybe thats why you see different prices?
9. Welcome to the Forum and may I offer you my sympathies towards your predicament. One question came to mind , how did you gain access to the letter written by your "Ex"?
10. I think I may have found him Sorry Angel couldn't resist it. Welcome to the Forum , I'm sure somebody will be along soon with a sensible reply.
11. Oh I don't think so , compounded quarter on quarter , he'll soon be feeling a new man , or is that what is wife hopes for?
12. "Subsequently I have suffered from an inferiority complex. Fortunately my wife was not in the room at the time." Never mind RD , with inflation back at 3.5% you'll soon be back on track.
13.
Do you think Happy Days are Here Again?[8-)]
Who knows? After Gordons performance last night , maybe he'll get enough votes to cling on. If , heaven forbid , that happens the couple in the report will not be happy Bunnies , unless they upsticks and move to France selling 100% mortgages of course.
14. Couple of things from the report. 1) Quote "French lenders in particular are offering cheap fixed rates on euro mortgages to buy French property and offer up to 100% of the purchase price ."  And I thought the French were so much more responsible than us Brits. 2) Reading the comments from the couple who are taking out a Euro mortgage , they make it sound like they are manipulating the system to maximise gains. Where's all the romance gone in buying your little old place in France??
15. Just like the old Dunkirk spirit , they could bring back all those fed-up expats!
16.

They need to stop these childish games and get on with providing a decent service.
Most people feel that the Irishman and the Greek provide an adequate service most of the time. To get perfection charter your own plane. John
Would you call having your weekend ruined through poor planning adequate. Would you call listening to a recorded message for 15 minutes and paying 10p/min adequate. Would you call having e-mails sent to you saying first of all your flight is cancelled , then 4 hours later rescheduled , then after spending hours trying to contact them , told "Its been a technical hitch , your flight as not been changed , ADEQUATE

18. Hi Francehouse The new times are Depart : 0940                              Arrive :  1225 The same as on their website We're only flying one-way ,(Liverpool - Bord.) coming back with RA but that's another story. So if your'e flying back , (Bord to Liv) your time sounds right but I'd still confirm Just looked at my latest e-mail confirmation , sent on Wednesday and you wont believe their address   [email protected]
19. Just something for you to consider. You can get bathroom grade laminate flooring with tile effect which is very realistic. If you apply clear silicone to the joints (as our fitter did) you get a little extra security against possible water damage. And they are a lot warmer to the feet!!
20. Without doubt the cheapest option will be a single Fosse , but this will depend on the elevation and positioning of these independent buildings. If you have the land and its in the right place then go for a 6000l
21. The problem with using Plasterboard on the underside of roofs is water damage. You may think your roof is sound but there are occasions when driving snow/rain can get under tiles and when you don't have underfelt , which is the norm in France, you can get problems. Why not use simple slating battens to hold the insulation. These can be fixed on the underside of the rafters at say 400mm apart. You can then still access the tiles for inspection purposes.
22. There does seem to be problems on the site this morning , I may be posting this again. You devis Dragon includes a large part for plasterboarding. Is/Will your attic space be used for habitation? There must be cheaper/better alternatives than pb for "holding up" insulation to the underside of roofs , unless its for aesthetics.
