1. "Isolating cockle" LOL!! And here was me thinking that was a French specialist term[:D]
 2. Try one of the local brico depots, Bricomarche, Briconauts etc.
 3.
The aspect of Big Brother I most enjoy is that Gordon Brown flies out to India to show what a serious international statesman he is - and just gets asked questions about Jade Goody.
What else should we ask the pension thief about? He lies about most other things..........[Www]
 4.
Ahhhh at last I know who this Jade Goody is that people have been talking about!!  Never seen BB or similar 'Reality' (Ha!) shows and don't want to.  OK now I know who she is, what is she? actress? singer? or what?
What is she? See Dick's previous comments, near the top of the thread.[;-)] She's a totally manufactured "celebrity", whose only claim to fame, (apart from Dick's comments), is that she won a previous series of "Big Brother", the NON-celebrity version.
 5. Can I just point out to everyone that nicotine is white, or colourless, and certainly odourless? The problem smokers leave behind is actually tobacco tar, that lovely substance responsible for lung cancer, throat cancer, and emphysema. Nicotine is simply an addictive drug. Sorry to be pedantic.
 6.
True Chief but that's part of the fun of coming to France isn't it ? [;-)]
No...........not if your wife means much to you. Mine would be ill for ages AFTER getting off the ship, so her journey would be a nightmare. Where's the fun in that?
 7. Very nice. Just wish I could believe it in todays, especially UK/USA "celebrity infatuated" society. The sentiments expressed are OK, but a large proportion of the UK, AND the USA is obsessed with riches, and I can't see it changing just because the rich person dies. What they HAD will remain just as imprtant to some, as what they GAVE. I found it a bit trite, to be honest, typically American. Sorry.
 8.
But as of yesterday when a guy who assulted me with a cricket bat  left me with a broken leg nose and ankle, and my  kids seeing counsellers .And all he got for pleading guilty to GBH is ...........£750 fine and told to behave himself in future .
I had my nose broken in an unprovoked incident outside my house several years ago. The attacker got bound over to keep the peace, despite having done the same thing several times before to others. All he had to do was plead guilty. Then HE appeared in court, trotted out some sob-story, and hey presto![:@] However, HE had no kids. I have two, and get on well with the other local kids. Took them about a year before he and his mrs moved out![;-)] There IS justice, then...........just don't hope for much through PC British courts[:(]
 9.

You are quite right gert, Naming and shaming is forbidden here.
Useful, helpful response there.
I don't know what that means, FA.  R/H's role here is to keep posts within the forum rules, she is doing her job.
OK, I suppose so, it just seemed unhelpful. He sort of KNEW he couldn't name and shame, so he didn't. RH's response was sort of ott. I'll say no more, otherwise I'll get this thread pulled like so many others. Sorry.
 10.

I ride, Mr Cooperlola has a model railway in one of our barns;
Mr Saddie has a model railway gradually taking over the sous sol. He also spends time on model railway forums. He asks if you are using English or French trains. His layout is "roughly" based on llandudlo and blyneau ffestiniog (apologies for the spelling)
I'm interested in model railways too. Would either Mr Cooperlola or Mr Saddie, or both, like to tell me,  pref by PM 'cos I'm having difficulty with my e-mail, (it seems to have converted my password into Polish, or some such language, so I can't get into it), something about their layouts? Gauge/scale, type of trains, French or English etc. I'd refer both to http://www.migo.org.uk/mambo/ and http://www.7mmlocomotives.co.uk/ as two of my favourite sites.

 12.
What about when they come up behind you, then tailgate for a bit, then overtake, then slow down so they are now going slower than you were?  This is mainly a motorway habit and by no means universal, but it is another one of those quirks that puzzles me whenever it happens.
The one that "gets my goat" is the UK habit of tearing up behind me on an unlit dual carriageway, or motorway, thus making me think "police?". (If it's fairly empty, I'm usually SLIGHTLY over the limit, so I slow to 70mph) Matey then slowsand trails along behind me for MILES, just close enough to bother me with his/her headlights in my wingmirrors. No matter WHAT speed I do, I then CANNOT get matey to pass me.[8-)] Nor can I outrun him/her without doing SILLY speeds. He/she simply keeps up.[8-)] Quite what this is all about, I dunno, but it's happened more than once.
 13. A bit like governemnt telling everyone they'll have to have new TVs then?
 14. I crossed from Calais to Dover on the day the Fastnet race was in ruins due to high seas, some years ago. The inside of the ship stank of vomit, so I went OUTSIDE. I got soaked by waves breaking over the top, but nothing else. The scariest bit was that the ship hit the harbour wall while trying to turn round after entering the harbour at Dover. Knocked a few folk over inside!
 15. Some years ago, I wrote to the then department of transport, asking why we, in the UK, no longer had any signs warning of accident blackspots, ( I WELL remember the signs on the I think, Sidcup bypass, proclaiming "Death Hill, Accident Blackspot" ), and why we didn't use the French system of black silhouettes, or similar, to mark the scenes of fatal accidents. I have long since lost the reply, but it stated that, fistly, there ARE no accident blackspots in the UK, since if there were, hmg would have done something about it, (for this, read that hmg can't ADMIT to an accident blackspot, as THEN they'd HAVE to do something about it[;-)] ), and secondly, the use of cutouts or signs of any kind would distract drivers and lead to accidents. So...........a bit like speed cameras then?
 16.
There was a UK government report a month or two ago (from their Road Transport Research whatever) that was saying that speed is not the main cause of accidents as had previously been thought (as often repeated). Their research shown that it was actually drivers not paying attention to what they were doing. Of course greater speed tended to make the accident worse - but the greatest cause was not paying attention to driving (e.g. children in back, mobile phones, mind wanders when bored, etc............ Ian
.............Keep looking at speedo instead of at the road..........
 17.
Yes, I have to admit, Beryl but for me it's driving habits - especially "banana" overtaking!  This seriously gets my blood up!
"Banana overtaking"?[8-)]
 18. My youngest brought home the "winter vomiting virus" last year, from 6th form. Only the wife DIDN'T get it[:@] Talk about projectile vomiting![:$] No-one take that last sentence as a request, please.
 19. Glad to have been of help, however small. My sympathies to you and your friend's family. I lost my own father just before Christmas, it's a sad time for all.
 20. And what are they for? Monitoring? Prosecution?
 21.
Yet another question on this topic : does anyone know if a speed camera can photograph vehicles on both sides of the road i.e. going in either direction 1) in France and 2) in UK. Pat.
Don't know about France, but in the UK, SOME cameras can be used to monitor both sides of the road, but NOT at the same time. There's one in Gainsborough, Lincs, which regularly gets turned to monitor traffic entering, or leaving the town. In that case, markings must also be on BOTH sides of the road so as to calibrate photos. It IS possible to trigger a camera from the "wrong" side of the road in the UK, but no prosecution would come from it. Forward facing cameras are mostly triggered by piezo sensors in the road, so only triggered by approaching vehicle on correct side of road. Have a look here: http://www.ukspeedcameras.co.uk/
 22. Yes, F1 was exciting around the time that rallying was too. That was before REAL rallies were cut from 5 day events to 3 day daylight only events with special spectator stages. And before BIG manufacturers like Ford, Citroen, Peugeot, were allowed to enter the main class with thinly disguised prototype cars[:@] I defy anyone to go into a Ford dealer, and buy their rally car, or even one using PART of the technology, apart from the shell. Even the Ford four wheel drive system bears no relationship to their rally car.Or to walk into a Citroen dealer or a Pug dealer, and order a 4wd road car.............they'd laugh at you. Nope, it's ALL about money now, like most things in this world. My cousin entered the old RAC rally in the mid-70's with a car he and a mate built, a Simca Rallye 2. He finished, and came 80th out of over 200 entrants. How much would it cost to enter now?
 23. Can anyone explain why threads on this forum, concerned with speeding, so quickly descend into bad-tempered exchanges, if not downright rudeness? And yet.............there are those whose avatars apparently preach speeding on a motorcycle[8-)] Just asking..........................
 24. Well, if it works as well as the other Labour-introduced IT systems, it'll not bother a lot of folk[;-)]
 25. Could you also get a large-ish dehumidifier?
