1.

Turnips are white carrots.
No they are not. Parsnips are `white carrots` Turnips are small round and white on the inside , white skin with a blush of red. Sweed are yellow on the inside, usualy around a killo in weight and have yellow/orange skin with hint of red to one end. ooooh what I wouldnt do for some mashed up with my potatoes!. This is from a lancashire girl, now you will get a different oppinion from someone from yorkshire, like my mum, a sweed is a tunip and vice versa
Parsnips are horrid [+o(] but MOH loves the things[8-)]  as for swede mmmmm nice mashed, one of my freinds loves coming to our house for a roast cos' he gets mashed swede which he doesn't get at home cos' his wife hates it so she won't cook it [:D] Where I grew up in the NE swedes were called turnips as well [8-)]
 2. Yes it will only provide 3rd party only and my insurances want notifying of foreign travel each time we come over so they know how many days we have used[:(] So claiming as above would not work, I managed to find a policy for our main car that provides 60 days green card cover, so by using both cars throughout the year I get 90 days in total[:)]   Reminds me must phone them tomorrow as we are coming over on Thursday [;-)]
 3. We have spent a couple of holidays at Saint Valery sur Somme and can confirm it is a very nice place to visit [:)] Lots of decent restaurants as well [;-)]
 4. I'd go along with Arromanches as well  as said the Mulberry harbours are very impressive and we spent a very nice day there a few years ago, it's a nice little town as well [:)]
 5.
This doesn't surprise me in the least, as I've always felt that people who are more musically oriented seem to have an easier time perfecting their accents in a second or third language than those who are not. My husband lived in Los Angeles for 27 years, and although he speaks and writes English more than fluently, he has never lost a very pronounced French accent.  Most people tell me that although I have a small accent of "some kind," it is relatively minimal and not clearly an American accent.  JM is not particularly musical, can't carry a tune and sometimes can't tell two pieces of music apart.  I've always loved music and used to sing in a choir. Over the years, I've noticed distinct differences in the abilities of people pronounce things well, even when they don't have a great deal of vocabulary.  It's always the more "musical" ones who have the best accent, all other knowledge being equal. PG
Hmmmmmmm    OK I play Guitar, bass and sing in bands and have done for ... ooooh too many years [;-)] While my French is rubbish  it would seem my accent is OK cos' the few things I can say are usually understood ...and here's the rub ....they then assume I can speak French well and continue in rapid fire French that just goes straight over my head [:-))]  a bit slower and I might understand it[:D] so I have come to the conclusion that a good accent can be a hinderance if your vocabulary is limited [:D] Our neighbour rattles away to me in French(or is it Breton[:-))]) and I'm totally lost but when she's speaking to MOH (whose French is waay better than mine) I can understand quite a bit of it [:)] I'm improving but it seems when I learn something new it pushes something old out [8-)]
 6. Ahh salmonella ona stick [:-))][:D]   My brother was a Chief EHO for many years and hated the things but couldn't find a way to ban them [;-)] he said they were not supposed to refrigerate them and then reheat etc. but they all do[;-)]   I always go for the chicken kebab on skewers (much healthier anyway [;-)]) cos' I don't like doner kebabs [:D]
 7. I haven't had a problem with it for years(famous last words time!) but do feel more inclined to get it wrong when getting back to the UK [8-)] Had a funny experience in France a few years ago.... going round a roundabout (anticlockwise as I should) I came face to face with a huge 4x4 going the wrong way, it had USA plates and it struck me as strange for an American to get it wrong as they drive on the right as well..... but then they don't really understand roundabouts I suppose [:D] And a few years earlier in Sorrento the guy from the hire car place kept on telling me " here we drive on the right" ........ well he lied ....on the Amalfi Drive they drive in the middle [:-))]
 8. Gravy should have the meat juices in it , sauce can be anything [;-)]   Soup is liquid, stew is solid(ish)[:D]
 9.
"Don't forget to put a sticker on your letterboxes saying " PAS DE PUBLICITE S.V.P". otherwise you'll be swamped with free ads and local supermarket promotions, it's a terrible waste of paper . Well Bassman I must say i'm disappointed, i thought you may be the ex bass player from Pink Floyd or someone moved over to France inbetween tours.  I think i'll start a "Who's famous on the forum" thread to see who i can find" (the official quote didn't work)   Don't you beleive it Twinkle, the local supermarket promotions are an essential part of life over here, it enables us to plan our shopping and ensure that we can get good deals, like half a pig for the freezer, don't ask what we did with half a head and half a tongue, and where the frsh fish are going to be cheep. The local postie doesn't deliver to those properties that are not fully occupied.
What makes it difficult to quote Twinkle's posts is the * in her username [;-)] I just had the same problem "non-matching blocks" removed the * and it worked [;-)]

I wish I was Roger Waters ... well as rich as [:D] Nearest I got was being in a band with Chris Rea's brother LOL [:D]
 11.
Thank you Bassman for the photo of your very own Burial Mount. What about an Alpine Garden/Rockery? You have a big garden, so it could make quite a feature.
Yeah I did suggest we advertise it as an historic site and charge entrance to look at it [;-)][:D] It was bare soil when we first saw it, then next time we went it was covered in little green plants, the following visit they were about a metre high [+o(] MOH identified the stuff as Fat Hen [8-)] and proceeded to chop it all down and weed kill it, next visit we had a lot of 6"high dead sticks The latest plan is as you suggest an Alpine garden come rockery, we have bought some Alpines and MOH is growing some camomile and allysum etc, from seeds to try and cover it... it's going to take a lot of plants though [;-)]
 12.     I met lots of those................................. by working in  Unemployment Benefit Offices around SW London for 20odd years [;-)] Strangley MOH worked at Thames TV and now Shepperton Studios and never met half as many [8-)]
 13.
Bassman, I tried this but couldn't make it work. Does it only change to eg "HERE" once you post the reply?
Yes [;-)] before you actually post the reply it will be [*url= thelonglinkythingy]HERE once posted it will change to HERE also remember the / in the second [    ]
 14. A lady from the immobilier helped us open one with CA before we actually bought the house but while we were in the process, I have to say we are impressed with CA's service when there was a delay in the house buying they contacted us twice to suggest we move the money to an interest generating account and we would still have immediate access to the money when we wanted it  [:D] They have been nothing but helpful to us and I have to say far better than any UK bank we have used esp the one I have been with for 43 years [;-)]
 15.
De tout façon it's not worth worrying about - you won't be here to see where the money goes anyway --- just let them fight it out, as families always do!!! maureen.
LOL good point Maureen [;-)] the only one I'm concerned about is my wife as we have no children anyway, so once we have both gone who cares ? I keep trying to think of a good cause to leave it to and coming up with Cat Rescue places, as we love our cats it seems as good as anything else[;-)]
 16.
Am currently delivering the phone books over a vast area of countryside. What a cauchmar though when you have no name on a post box either in a hamlet with or without a name also. Please think of us delivery people when you have a home in France and put your name clearly inside the panel in ink that won't fade or disappear with the damp - Thank you!
[:$] Ooops you just reminded me, ours faded within a few weeks and I keep forgetting to do it again.. sowwy,. any idea if printer ink is less likely to fade?? I think that's probably what happens to most people they do it and it fades with the light or damp and they don't notice[:(]
 17. This is what we have [:'(][:(]
 18. We have stayed at this one a few times and found it pretty good, they do trips to EuroDisney as well   BERNY RIVIERE     Clicky on the above [;-)]
 19. The biggest and best pizzas I have found are at a restaurant in Morlaix just off the old town square if there are four of you having them the table disappears[:D] They have a very authentic thin crispy base and they are not overloaded with toppings, to echo Will the best I have found outside of Italy mind you we have had some bad ones there[*-)] as for the size .... if I say they are 2ft wide by 18inches I am not exaggerating [;-)] but because they are thin and lightly topped not too much(well OK you don't want anything else that day [;-)]) The one problem is they do not fit on the plates so it's a bit tricky cutting them [:D]The Hotel du Lac in Huelgoat does a pretty good pizza as well[:D]   Oh dear  does that make Morlaix a really bad area ???? I think it's very nice myself [;-)]
 20. Halloumi. .... also known as "squeaky cheese" those who have eaten it fried or grilled will know why [:D]
 21.
We moved into our house in May last year.  In October, the notaire sent me a copy of the tax fonciere and I gave her a cheque for my share to pass on to the previous owner.  He'd already paid the tax d'habitation as he was the resident on January 1.  I'm expecting this years bills in September/October.
Does that mean we have got away with them both for last year then? (tax d'habitation and tax fonciere )?
 22.
Gosh, Nick, you must be as young as your avatar. It was a delightful (but I'm not sure how widespread) chain of establishments along similar lines to Wimpy, etc. Sorry - I wasn't implying that you'd be better off finding a magic goose as a means of expanding  your empire![:)]
OMG!!!!!! I remember those [:$] I must be showing my age now [:'(]
 23. This is something we are confused about as well [*-)] We bought our house last June(2005) and as yet have not received any tax d'habitation bill etc. should we have by now?? I read something that made me think that as we were not the owners/occupiers on 1st Jan 2005 the bill would have gone to the previous owner[*-)]   Can anyone tell me when we should/should have receieved a bill and if we should already have and have not ... what do we do?????
 24.   This also works   [*url=yourverylonglinktosomethingyou want to post] short link if you remove the * in the first [] it produces this shortlink so http://www.completefrance.com/cs/forums/3/649371/ShowPost.aspx#649371   becomes   [*url=http://www.completefrance.com/cs/forums/3/649371/ShowPost.aspx#649371]HERE   becomes   HERE   without the * to stop it working [;-)]
 25.
How about a chamomile lawn...turn your shit pit into an attraction!
That's exactly what I suggested to MOH  for ours [;-)]
