  1. Norman wrote:- ''On a train or plane a laptop is just as good.'' Do you always take your laptop on a train or plane journey?
  2. I'm pretty boring really as far as forum names go. Powerdesal stems from two sources really, I am (was) a power generation engineer who moved into desalination construction and operations, hence 'powerdesal'. At one point I played football for a works team called P&D Dynamos ( power & desalination operations Dept) hence 'powerdesal' again. I do get a little 'miffed' at times when people read it as 'powerdiesel' but.............
  3. basquesteve wrote :- '' Tescos are crap compared to any French super market '' I live in France as you do, I don't know which French supermarkets you shop at but our local Intermarche, Casino and Carrefour don't compare at all to the Tesco / Sainsbury / Morrisons that we use when we visit UK. The choice in French supermarkets cannot be compared with the choice in UK. Things are changing thankfully, LeClerq and Auchan are making great improvements, it's just a pity that there aren't any within many many kilometres of where I live.
  4. We like TESCo, we also like Sainsburies, and Morrisons, don't much care for ASDA but that's probably because of the local clientele. More people need to shop at Tescos, get the profits back up and hence the share price and thus the dividend ( we have a lot of Tesco shares ).
  5. ''Do we have to put up with this racist cr@p.'' Racist ????????? What 'race' is a bank ? Perhaps comments about Scots people are 'racist', what race are Scots, are they the same 'race' as English, Welsh, French, German etc etc ?.
  6. Q, you really can't expect logical thought to apply to politicians.
  7. UKIP voting - on this forum ????????????????????????????/// I thought everyone here had no time for UKIP and Nigel Farage ( except me) !!!!
  8. I have no problem with Scotland wanting independence, if they vote for it then good luck to them. However, I am concerned that if the vote is 'No' then there will be a violent reaction from the 'yes' camp against the so-called 'traitors' ( as they will be called by the yes campaigners). My own view is that if no independence is the majority vote then Scotland should be treated exactly the same as England, no special deals, no special allowances, no devolution at all. In fact, scrap the Scottish Parliament, or create an English Parliament and give England the same treatment as Scotland gets at the moment.
  9. Frecossais wrote.....''I have heard that it's better to get the paperwork done before leaving France rather than waiting till you get back home. Don't know if our account has been credited yet, as we're in England now.'' Not in my experience, a couple of years ago, before we were resident in France, we had a quite large medical bill due to an emergency admission. We paid the bills, returned to UK, submitted the originals together with the appropriate claim form. Two weeks later the full amount was credited to our UK bank account. Simple and efficient.
  10. Not relevant to the pension comments......... We got our tax bill this morning :-( No actual income tax to pay but a substantial amount of social charges ( a tax by any other name ) on investment income. There is no indication as to the possibility of paying in two(?) tranches, is there a limit below which it is not possible or is it up to me to request the facility ?
  11. Do you really mean RHD, ie the steering wheel on the right hand side of the car ?????????????
  12. Idun wrote '' powerdesal, if you have a UK state pension a UK issued S1 that you hand into the french authorities, then you wouldn't need an EHIC for France, just everywhere else. And I would hazard a guess that would include the UK too. '' Exactly Idun, that was the point I was making. together with the fact that my EHIC was issued by UK and was valid for 5 years.
  13. '' Can you even register such things in the UK these days without a UK address? '' A minor comment :- whilst car registration in UK requires an address, caravans are not registered.
  14. '' My French issued card is valid for one year and I can renew it via the Internet.'' As a bona-fide, tax registered resident of France, my EHIC was issued in UK, specifically stated as being valid for all EU countries EXCEPT France. It is valid for 5 years.
  15. Once upon a time ( back in the day ! ) I used to enjoy playing and watching football, now I wouldn't cross the street to watch any football game, at any level. 22 men (?) chasing a ball around a field is totally boring (to me), it's the wrong number of men and the ball is the wrong shape !!!!!!!!!!!
  16. I too heard about that radio report but thought that the holding camp was somewhere in the Vendee ( accent )
  17. '' Now that the Med is flattening out and open boats can use the summer weather to cross it...... Calais this year looks like its going to see more than ever arrive . Italy will push them into France thats for sure . '' And the answer to the problem is..........? 1. Sink on sight - not really acceptable these days. 2. Accept the migrants and just put up with more and more and more etc. 3. Return them to the point of departure.
  18. Romantic gestures: a. I've never really been known as a romantic type of person. b. After 45 years of marriage I think hilarity might be the result.
  19. Pierre, Thanks for trying, I appreciate your efforts.
  20. Catalpa, I did post on Anglo info but so far have had zero response.
  21. Great idea but.........we don't have a dog. We did try to get the cat interested but he just didn't want to know !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  22. Thanks Pierre, that sounds a great idea.
  23. This is a long shot. Mrs PD lost her wedding ring in the garden yesterday. For some reason it fell off her hand whilst mowing the grass. It's very upsetting particularly as it's been on her finger for the last 45 years. I'm hoping that there is some kind person who has a metal detector sensitive enough to detect gold and who is willing to either let me borrow it or hire it so that I can search. We are in Normandy, not too far from Percy. Here's hoping !
  24. '' You know that climate change is here and that it will get worse.'' I presume you are a believer in the religion of man made climate change. Wake up to reality.
