1. Do the lyrics matter? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAsmf1LGcpA&feature=youtube_gdata_player http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxELSzay2lc&feature=youtube_gdata_player Maybe not.
 2.
Am I alone in wishing that I could have just 24 hours free from seeing or hearing this pompous bore? He seems to be inescapable in whatever medium you turn to. His followers seem to believe he is a reincarnation of Shakespeare and Einstein. I am not one of them.
This certainly strikes a chord.  What makes him think that anyone is interested in what he has to say?  Why should he expect people to agree with his perverse view of life and his strange habits?  When will we be rid of this dreadful man? Stephen Fry, on the other hand, I always find to be well-mannered and amusing.
 3.
I wouldn't presume to know what was in Carol Thatcher's mind. For my own part I used to have one of these cuddly toys when I was a child. I loved him, quite literally, to bits. I now understand that the word has been used in a derogatory way and have excluded it from my vocabulary. If I used it by accident, it would certainly not be meant in any derogatory fashion. To sack her when Jonathan Ross was only suspended tells us something about the BBC's priorities. He makes them a lot of money; Carol Thatcher doesn't. I used not to mind the F word, but now I'm suffering from a surfeit of it and can no longer watch people like Gordon Ramsey. Funny old world eh ? Hoddy
Isn't that what Thatcherism was all about?
 4.
For my tuppence worth, I think Willow was Pippin, and has since changed her handle, but of course  any "quotes" from Pippin will remain so, and secondly, since the original posting on 28/7/07, she has edited the posts to remove all references to her partner. As I say only my guesswork. Edit: Tressy, you beat me to it!
That makes sense; I hadn't appreciated the age of the thread. Can you now explain the 'whole story concerning the politician, the lighthouse and the trained cormorant'.
 5.
confused where does "Pippin" come into it ?
So am I!  Also "tinitus".  No mention of tinitus and suddenly it's there along with ear-muffs.  I agree about selective deafness - I suffer from that - but is this an example of selective blindness?
 6.
Hey Mystery tramp, do you like Dylan by any chance? [:)]
Well, I'm not not selling any alibis!!
 7. It's back!  Don't know where it has been hiding though.
 8. High Alumina cement is made by fusing together a mixture of a calcium-bearing material, usually limestone, and an aluminium-bearing material such as bauxite.   Portland Cement is a finely-ground powder made by grinding Portland cement clinker, gypsum and small quantities of other materials. As for building on soft soil this is usually something to be avoided.  Some questions you might want to ask include what is the bearing pressure of the soft soil; what is beneath the soft soil; what sort of area is your building; what sort of loads will your foundations or slab be carrying.  You might care to look at Foundation Design and Construction by M J Tomlinson or, as an introduction to the subject,  Structural Engineer's Pocket Book by Fiona Cobb. Another option would be to employ the services of a structural engineer or an architect. Good luck and do let us know where this building will be situated - the thought of a pre-stressed concrete structure designed and/or built by a DIY enthusiast is intriguing.
 9.
Is anyone using System 9, or can remember how to get the system profile up? That will tell you whether or not the tower CD drive is a writer as well as a reader.
Apple Menu then Apple System Profiler (the application is in the Apple Menu Items folder in the System Folder).  Then click on the Devices and Volumes tab - you should see a discription of the drive there.
 10.
I am unsure at this stage, which region (Dept) I will be in.  In preparation however, I am compiling a list of Artisans from various trades (those associated with house renovations) plumbing, fosse septic, attic conversions, the whole shebang.
Are you mad???? Are you aware that France has an area of over 550,000 km², has a population in excess of 60 million, is divided into 21 régions (22 if you count Corsica), and has 96 départments?   Assuming people respond as you expect and even if you only select two or three firms from each départment for each of the important trades you are going to end up with something approaching 2000 database entries!  I think the expression 'life's too short' springs to mind.  Could you narrow it down to, perhaps, north or south France or maybe départments that begin with letters between A and M; something to give yourself a chance having enough time to actually buy a property. I see from your e-mail address you are in the nuclear industry - you don't have anything to do with the safety side of it, do you? Have fun.
 11. By the way, what do you think of your new computer, bigjimbishop?  After all this I imagine you feel like the man who didn't know it was loaded!
 12.
Hi, have just read your message I thought the St Malo-Portsmouth route was running all year do you mean St Malo-Plymouth which isnt running until late November?   Paula
During the winter Brittany Ferries normal St Malo-Portsmouth Saturday daytime crossing is replaced with a Saturday overnight crossing.  I think it is so they can run the 'cruise' option - leave Portsmouth Friday night and arrive back Sunday morning having spent the day in St Malo.  Doesn't start until November, however. Thanks for the tips on the restaurants.
 13. I had the same problem although with fewer lights.  I used inverted clay flowerpots. So far so good!
 14.
Have done one day (sounds pathetic I know but whoopee!)
It doesn't sound pathetic at all!  Doing one day was what most helped me (although the patches, the gum, the rages, the eating, the mints, etc. helped also).  I just tried to get through one day at a time.  I don't know who gave me the advice but it has worked so far (3 years 332 days 7 hours and counting - I don't even think about it now!).  My aim was to go to bed each night not having smoked that day.  I didn't worry about the next day until it arrived.  I also allowed myself little treats every now and then - nothing extravagant but a little reward for being so good! Good luck - you will feel better soon although then the worry about why you were so stupid for so long kicks in. Just get to bedtime!
 15.
Why didn't I think of that...
You probably fell asleep waiting for iPhoto to open!  Excellent programme but takes an annoyingly long time to start - particularly as when once opened clicking on the red 'close' button doesn't just close the window but also shuts down the application.  Grrr.
 16.
Loosely back on topic, is there a way to resize a picture using the tools that come with OS-X (or AppleWorks)?
The simplest way is to use the bundled iPhoto.  Import your picture into iPhoto, where, as you probably know, you can do some limited enhancements such as reducing red-eye; then export it (File - Export...).  You can scale the image in the export dialogue box by changing the number of pixels and export it in the same format as the original or as a jpg, tiff or png file. Robert's your aunty's life partner!
 17.
I'm assuming this is Windows, because I don't think Powerpoint is avaiable for Macs.
Powerpoint is available for Macs - I have it in Office X and I am sure it is included in Office 2004 for Macs. From the help file.... Save a slide as a picture to use in another program, a film recorder, or on the Web You can save a slide in one of several graphic file formats and then insert it as a picture in another program or on a Web page. 1. Display the slide you want to save as a picture. 2. On the File menu, click Save As. 3. In the Save As box, type a name for the slide or slides. 4. On the Format pop-up menu, click the graphics file format you want. 5. Click Options. 6. In the Preferences dialog box, select the resolutions, image size, and compression options you want. 7. Click Save current slide only to save a single slide, or Save every slide to save each slide in your presentation as a separate graphic file, and then click OK. 8. Click Save. Note   After your slides have been saved as graphic files, you can print them to a film recorder to create 35-mm slides, color overheads, and so on. If you don't have a film recorder, you can send your saved pictures to a service bureau for printing. For instructions about sending files to a service bureau and recommendations about file formats, contact the service bureau directly. A bit long winded but basically go to the Save as menu and then it can be saved as a jpg, tiff, etc.  I would think it is the same for Windows but you never know!
 18. Thanks for that.  It looks like the answer is to arrive early and have an abstemious meal in Ouistreham.  Don't fancy negotiating the ferry ramps after a bottle of the house red! Hey ho.
 19. Does anyone know if the restaurant on the Mont St Michel is open on a Saturday night, 23.30 Caen to Portsmouth, crossing?  Never having done the overnight journey in that direction before (the St Malo-Portsmouth overnight doesn't start until November) we were wondering if we will be in for a quiet dinner or a mad bun-fight or the long queues at the self-service. Any info gratefully received!
 20. Does your error message read - Microsoft Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience? It may be due to 'heavy mail usage'.  If so there is an update from Microsoft Support which may help.
 21. Don't know if this is of any help but noticed it on the iPod discussion forum on the Apple site. To set the Audio Book in order in iTunes on create a Separate Playlist in iTunes and drag and drop all the Audio Books to the Playlist. Then click on Track Number column before the Track Name to arrange it in order. Post back if you have any questions. Santo     Re: Audio Book Chapters are Out of Order Posted: Feb 24, 2006 12:37 PM   in response to: Santo           Thank you for taking the time and trouble to reply, Santo! I tried your suggestion, but it didn't seem to help, but then I noticed something that I hadn't noticed before. Half of the discs were titled "Disc XXX" and the other half were titled "Disk XXX". (Notice the spelling of "Disc" vs. "Disk".) Once I made the spelling uniform, everything was fine. Thanks again! Good luck.
 22.
Should be do nothing, maybe burn a bit more because we are not "the worse". Of course not - no sane person would suggest that course of action.
Please don't try to imply I am sane.
Mystery Tramp wrote: "Does anyone know where I can find a baby seal - after reading the tosh written by Deimos and looking again at the information provided by Greenpeace I feel the only sensible thing to do is to go out and club one to death ..... Now, where is my culling club!!"
For the avoidance of doubt the above comment about killing seals was meant in a light hearted way.  I didn't intend for it to be taken seriously and I apologise if anyone reading this forum thought I was soliciting information on the location of seals so I could kill them.  Now kittens - they're another matter. (Sorry that was flippant - kittens are always safe in my company - hee hee!).
One thing though, Dick normally get really uptight when somebody posts using spoof names and when he does not know who they really are. And with a name like "Mystery Tramp" I would guess somebody is trying to keep who they really are secret - so come on Dick, shouldn't you be demanding to know who they are. Ian
I am sure Dick knows more about me from my name than he would if my name was Ian or Dick or Harry.  I don't see what the problem is with my name anyway - I am mysterious and I am a tramp.  My surname might also be Tramp.  You don't know. I think things have descended to a low level when my name is insulted in this way.  You save the planet in your way and I'll destroy it in mine.  But at least, as we sink slowly into oblivion, I will be travelling in style and when I do decide to switch off my toxic computer I wont have to click on a button marked START.
 23.
How about a new thread for grey haired technophobes explaining in words of few sylables exactly how to down load music from the ether, fleetwood mac for preference (or for starters).
One way is to go to the Apple iTunes Store. Click on the Free Download button and download the Windows version of iTunes (I assume you have a pc - if you had a mac iTunes would have been preloaded). When iTunes opens up it will probably default to the iTunes Store.  Click on Account in the Quick Links section.  Create your account - you have to have an address and credit card account in the UK, France, US, etc.  I don't think UAE is part of the scheme - enter Fleetwood Mac in the search window and buy one of the 25 albums or compile your own.  When download is complete either burn a cd or sit back and listen and ponder why the Green Manalishi had a two pronged crown.
 24. That's a whole new thread!  Favourite albums with tracks I never play.  How about Rainy Day Women Nos 12 and 35 and, of course, any George Harrison contribution to the later Beatles albums.
 25.
Love the Bobness reference, too.
I've been rumbled! Thought I might be when I read the Apple I pod help please thread this morning.
