  1. A friend with a freeview card and a very good signal cannot get channel 5, message says 'no satellite signal being received', he does get channel 4 and all the BBC, ITV channels etc, does anybody have any ideas why no channel 5?
  2. I have just purchased and installed a Optex digital receiver which is connected to a dish and receives Astra 2D transmittions OK.  Although I have BBC1, BBC2 and ITV 1 there are no indications on the channel numbers brought up via the on screen menu for BBC 3 and 4 or ITV 2 and 4, does anyone have them?[8-)]
  3. Don't be scared of flying, never be scared of flying, its when the *ugger stops flying that you want to be scared!

  5. I use limewire at www.limewire.com  works well.
  6. Twinkle He's having a laugh. 189€ for a satellite dish, you could get exclusive use of Jodrel bank for that! As I stated in my last reply buy the kit from Casto for €69 this includes digibox and dish. When I do installations I normally charge around 250€ for the kit and installation.
  7. OK, I agree with all that has been said regarding a good LNB and cable. I live in The Languedoc and I install satellite systems occasionally. An 80cm dish will be suitable, in Castorama at the moment they have a deal on, a pack containing an 80cm dish, plus LNB plus digibox for 69Euros. The LNB is a twin headed one giving you the option of using the same dish for Asta2 (UK channels) and Hotbird (French channels). The digibox (Receiver) is a French one but can be set up via the remote control to receive Astra 2 signal and hence all the UK free to air channels. I have just installed one and it works perfectly. Even if you only use the dish and LNB with your own receiver it is still a good buy at that price.
  8. For some reason having installed IE7 it refuses to open lots of web pages, it gives a message 'IE has encountered a problem and is closing' etc etc. Any clues on how to fix this or, does anyone know the way to get your computer to 'think' you still have IE6, (this was in a post some months ago but having looked back over 20 pages still cannot find it). If all this fails is IE6 still around somewhere to change back to?[8-)]
  9. I would certainly suggest that your dish has moved slightly or that the LNB has, but also check the cable into the dish, sometimes if it is not properly secured it can be blown off the connector.
  10. My only advise would be don't! You will only have to do it again in a few years time, unless it is a very good quality paint applied carefully it will start to peel. Why not bite the bullet and tile the pool. We did ours ourself 3 years ago after some horrendous paint problems. It took us 4 days, looks super and shouldn't need to be touched again. It was more expensive than paint but only about 50% so cheaper than painting it twice would have been.
  11. Slightly off track but I have never been able to get my video recorder to record from the digibox (i.e. any UK satellite TV). I have set it up as shown on Claires link as well as some other options but never got anything recorded, anyone got an answer as to what I am (or am not) doing right?
  12. We have sky and all channels are working fine, as stated either unplug the box for 5 minutes or check the dish and LNB.
  13. Hi Chrissie   All the BBC 1 local channels are between 971 and 988 so you need not go without. Someone far more technically minded than me will hopefully enlighten us on how to do it permenantly.
  14. You no longer pay seperately for a TV licence in France, it is added to your household tax bill as they assume you have a TV, it is up to you to prove otherwise.
  15. Has anyone subscribed to Sky pay channels by telephoning from a UK mobile in France. I want to sign up for Sky Sports etc, have a UK mobile, have all the info regarding the system (seriel No from the screen etc) so feel well prepared however if anyone has any expierience and can point to any little minefields before I ring I would be grateful. I can pay for the service by UK bank account or credit card no problem however both have my French address, do they ask for the address on the account or just account details. I also have a UK address where the card 'will be used'!!
  16. Has anyone done a university course in the Montpellier, area (34) and if so have they any recommendations. I am in the same boat as the original correspondant and feel that the last few postings recommending university for a year seem like a good idea.
  17. DVLA will not be in the slightest bit interested, I know from expierience. Once they know you are out of the UK they wash their hands of you completely as they can't make any money from you.
  18. Has happened to me also, I do a system restore to the day before and that seems to clear it.
  19. Hello Goodlife We arrived here 6 years ago with children 1, 3 and 12 years old. The older two were put straight into French school. Within 6 weeks both were conversing with classmates and teachers (none of who spoke English). Things just continued from there and all three are now totally fluent and loving it. Our eldest who is now 18 has just passed her 1st year Bac and is looking forward to going on to university. The two younger ones have an excellent education at the local village school. Regarding other perents we had no problems what so ever, my wife spoke good French (and I must agree with the other reply, it is you who need to get stuck in to the French lessons) and we were very soon adopted into the local community, a task made so much easier when you have children of school age. My advise, don't worry too much, children adapt. Encourage them to have their new French friends around to play and you will be amazed by their progress, our biggest problem nowadays is making sure ours speak English at home, just so they don't forget it!
  20. Thanks Albert, worked a treat, the other way mentioned by Sam doesn't work as you don't get the save as option when right clicking a powerpoint photo, well I didn't anyway.
  21. Can anyone tell me how I can capture a single powerpoint presentation picture and make it my desktop background or is it just not possible?
  22. I recently installed a system called oxymatic from www.staraqua.com which uses no chemicals at all. Had it running for  two months now and it's great, water is really clear and feels lovely to swim in.
  23. You might like to try a neat programme called 'crapcleaner'. It can be downloaded from www.filehippo.com and it can be set to clean your computer, including cookies automatically, 'say' once a day. It also gives you the ability to select certain cookies that you wish to keep i.e from your bank etc. I have used it now for over a year with no problems, simple to use and not a big package.
  24. All the other answers are great but in the mean time if he needs to access mail on his wanadoo account acces the internet, go to www.mail2web.com and enter his address and password, this will bring up all his current mail which he can reply to, forward or anything he wishes, short term answer.
  25. A good method is to put about 2 - 4 handfulls of small 20gm chlor pastilles into the pool and with a net or similar push them over the afected area and leave them for a few days this cures the problem. Wire brushing will make the situation worse as it leaves small channels in the grout (and even the tiles) where algae can grow. I have also been told that if you take the PH level down to below 6.8 for 24 hours this will kill of algae, never tried this method though.
