I myself would build. Cost per sq ft is much less ( depending on the state of property to renovate) and is often much quicker in real terms. It does depend on the cost of land in the area that you wish to live in and in rural France if you wish to have a nice big garden a new build or building your own will ensure this. We opted for an old propery that some one else had spent at least 50,000(if not more) doing up and it only cost us about 10,000 euros more than a complete basket case of the same size and in the same area. You are now buying at the top of the market in a lot of areas so will not make much if any profit, long or short term on sinking a lot of money into an old house in need of a great deal of work. Yes you can use your old U.K. phone you just need to phone them and get it unlocked( they give you a number to type into the phone?) than when you arrive in France just pop in to an Orange/France telecom or one of the others and buy a pay as you go sim card. If you use pay as you go in the U.K. you can also keep the account open with 10 and leave an answer phone message giving your new Frence mobile number.Keep the U.K. sim card and if to go back just pop it into your phone to use as normal. Quick Route..Phone an ISP in France to get an account. Better than doing it online and you do not have your software messed with. You will find there numbers in the back of a French internet mag. Once you have a user name and P/W and dial up number turn on your Mac, at the top ( finder bar) is a phone symbol, click open internet connect, a box opens then you just put in the dail-up number user name p/w (make modem cable in phone socket) then just it connect should take 2 min's not counting phoning an isp. AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands (Reuters) -- Amsterdam police said Thursday they had arrested 52 people in the Dutch capital in connection with an e-mail scam designed to defraud people in several countries with get-rich-quick schemes. Police said the group was suspected of sending about 100,000 e-mail messages to addresses in Japan and the United States. The e-mails claim to be from a well-known individual or the individual's relative and promise the recipient money for help in transferring frozen funds to an accessible place. In such scams -- made famous by West African criminals -- the victim is usually asked to pay hefty sums for airfares or other expenses. "It is surprising that despite repeated reports about this people continue to be so naive as to take part in these proposals," the police statement said. A police spokesman declined to say whether those arrested were Dutch citizens or foreign nationals. The suspects were seized in raids on 23 locations around Amsterdam, along with a number of personal computers, mobile phones, false documents and a total of $62,340 in cash.

Most villages houses to not have gardens. I think 150,000 euros will get you a good condition 3/4 bed house in a Village but no garden. Most house with gardens are new build villa's and they seem to start from around 200,000 euros in a good location. You may get a rural property for this amount with some land but it would be a basket case and uninhabital. well (sic) the answer is in villages is that they are used ( apart from cat/dog mess) as markers at night for traffic. headlights shine on them enabling the driver(s) not to drive in to your front room. In Eqypt they have clear plastic bags with water in, hung out side shops to keep away the fly's. Though this just seemed to keep the fly"s in the shop!!!
