  1. What you need to be super careful about is that next time the "Brits Abroad" lobby starts moaning that they've been short changed on their pensions or their winter fuel allowance isn't covering the cost of their Christmas shopping anymore, or their S1 isn't worth a hill of beans, Brits living in the UK might just be even less sympathetic than they are already if they perceive that their overseas counterparts see solidarity as a one way thing ?

Or, copy and paste the link into the reply box, highlight it, click on the link icon, and paste the link again, into the box which appears. 4. The Brassens song is, IMO, a lot better. It also contains a line which has amused me for a long while and which I wish translated elegantly: Et, petit à petit, les voilà qui se montent Le cou jusqu'à penser que le crottin fait par Leurs chevaux, même en bois, rend jaloux tout le monde.
  5. Whoever wrote that needs to clarify whether being "born there" colours all of us similarly. Or does "born there" get trumped by "moved away"?
  6. It's an Archant thing. I followed a link (I think the popup only shows more info if you enable it from a Complete France page other than the forum) and it explained that it's a tool for accessing paid content from the magazine that's not automatically available online. So, a paywall by any other name. Not sure why it needs to appear on the forum. Apparently, Archant are constantly exploring new technology (they say, I paraphrase). Clearly not for the forum software, though,
  7. Thanks, ALBF, but I'm trying to give them up.
  8. I think you can save the enormous amount of space you'd require to bring loo roll, Wooly. We have a fair number of UK manufacturers, and I'm guessing we might have found out by now if supply couldn't keep pace with demand, given the amount of excrement generated by this whole débâcle. And unless you plan on visiting the UK via Italy, please don't bring any disgusting French spaghetti. It goes from rock hard to wallpaper paste within nanoseconds, for reasons I've never fathomed.
  9. Weirdly, that's about the clearest explanation I've read to date. Which speaks volumes.
  10. The results of a general election can, indeed, be changed every five years. It could be argued that, knowing that, people are a bit more cavalier about how they vote. It could equally be argued that people who voted in the referendum did, at the very least, realise they were voting to change the course of the UK's future for good, and voted with that in mind, even if they didn't know what, exactly, they were voting for. As has been asked by many people of late: what would happen if there were to be a second vote and it was inconclusive? If it was 48/52 again, but with a majority remain vote? How could such a result be any more valid than the previous one? I wished wholeheartedly to stay in the EU. However,I find myself asking, seriously, why so many people seem hellbent on dragging out this nightmare for as long as is humanly possible without, in fairness having the remotest real idea of what a better, more equitable solution would look like.
  11. OK, hands up: of those who have been involved in a car accident where, arguably, the other party was at fault, how many have received any communication from the other party after the event to check on their wellbeing? If not, how many of you were surprised? And how many of you were paid by the Daily Mirror to express this in print?
  12. Makes a change from the moon being made of cheese.
  13. It would be interesting to compare your cholesterol levels, fat deposits etc. You can be slim and unhealthy as well as being fat and healthy..which was part of my earlier point. Mr Betty and I passed each other going in opposite directions weight-wise a few years back. ?
  14. ^^^ Silent Pool? I swear that gin is following me. it's everywhere!
  15. I really think it's a mistake to generalise about the dietary habits of a whole generation. I have a friend (and he is far from unique) to whom most vegetables and fruit are anathema. He is 63. He would happily live on meat, baked beans, fish fingers and fried foods. Another friend of a similar age won't eat any food with seasonings other than salt and pepper. She tends to go on cruises for holidays, to avoid "foreign food" and won't eat anything she doesn't instantly recognise. Among my own children and their friends, there's a distinct trend towards home cooked, fresh foods, or at least towards knowing where food has come from, and eating clean, healthy food. A large number are vegetarian or vegan, most enjoy cooking from scratch and are competent, if not in some cases very good at it. Of course, there are many obese people. I'd venture to suggest probably almost as many over 50 as under 30. I have two sons. One cycles everywhere, has a 28" waist and eats and drinks pretty much what he likes. What he likes is preparing home cooked meals from the weekly organic veg box he gets delivered to his home. The other has about a 36" waist, is a trained chef, works in the food industry and studied food science. As part of his university studies, he undertook a detailed anaylsis of his diet, subjected himself to other trials to determine his body type, and came home and announced that on paper, he's clinically obese. He also prepares all his meals from scratch, cooks at home, eats out occasionally, visits the gym on a regular basis, walks his dog twice daily and is a keen and frequent skateboarder. As children, both my kids ate the same meals, snacks etc. There is no real rhyme or reason as to why they're so physically different, they just are. It's not all about dietary habits for everyone.
  16. I think there is a fundamental difference between "living" somewhere and staying in a hotel. Just saying.
  17. I used to work between the UK, Switzerland, Maghreb, Horn of Africa, East Africa and a couple of Indian Ocean islands. If anyone can sandwich that lot into a fifteen minute commute, chapeau. Bet Mr Bamford didn't suggest to his HR department that they only recruit from a pool of people who lived within 15 minutes of their offices.
  18. LOL! Judith, I read your post after seeing a quote from HIGNFY, which read: "Breaking: Prince Philip involved in Brexit metaphor". Your observations re. the media would apply with equal validity to both. They've raised saying plenty when there's nothing to say to an art form.
  19. This may sound weird, I confess, it even seemed weird to me..but we have become traffickers of Waitrose pink grapefruit squash. It seems to be very popular because squash doesn't exist outside the UK..and its a source of amusement because the average French person thinks, if you offer it, that you've just asked them mid-morning if they would like a "scotch". Given the current craze in the UK for it, artisan gin could be an option. Again, we converted a few neighbours to G&T. There's a certain scepticism around Pimm's although people will drink it politely. Some of my French friends have spent enough time in the UK to have acquired a taste for such delicacies as Piccallilli and Branston Pickle, but I doubt they're for everyone.
  20. Haven't noticed that, Hoddy. In fact, I'm slightly surprised that in the reports Ive seen and heard, there's been little or no reference to, or discussion of the possible sequence of events or apportionment of blame. What I do find weird is the preoccupation that's now emerging with whether or not the D of E thanked his rescuers or enquired about the welfare of the people in the other car. It's almost as if there's a section of the media looking to blame him for *something* and if it can't be the accident itself, then they'll find something else. No mention as to whether the people in the other car asked about him, etc., etc..so obviously that aspect is of no interest. ?
  21. If you can link your mobile to your wifi then calling and receiving calls via Whatsapp should be possible.
  22. If you didn't see it, or if, indeed, you only have French telly, it's apparently just been bought by Canal +
  23. I'm quite partial to a hot cross bun. I'm more than happy to see them more often. Especially as they appear so randomly if condemned to fitting in with Easter!
