  1. for what it's worth, if we take too much power then the trip on the board goes (only usually happens if the tumble-drier is on and I'm using the big log-saw on a knotty bit!) The main EDF has only tripped once, when there was a sleeve caught in the tumble-drier door which nearly killed it.
  2. if she can get an E106 then she is OK untl that runs out I believe, and as she will be looking for work she will not be an 'inactif'. We ran into problems because my daughter couldn't get one and the 'parental home' had moved country!
  3. I'm registered as a BNC, and now my 23 year-old daughter has moved "back home" I have added her to the ayant droits so she is covered. She lived and worked in Germany for a year before, but they wouldn't give her an E106. Neither would the UK (where she worked before) as she apparently hadn't paid enough into the system. Once we get the paperwork through she will be using my SS number but will have her own carte-vitale, and then she can sign up with ASSEDIC and ANPE and find a job! HTH :)
  4. nice ideas, but she doesn't just go in one place... I try and keep all possible doors shut to limit the possibilities but that still leaves the kitchen, landing, hall...
  5. phew! haven't got long to sort it out if that was not the case :)
  6. I was under the impression that visas were no longer required for a tourist staying less than 90 days... is this not the case?
  7. as a french resident on a UK passport, is there anything I should be aware of when flying to the USA?
  8. we have a 2-year old cat that has always been a bit "special" :) She was always very wild, and a bit jumpy. She spent the last 9 months living wild in the woods out the back, and only started coming in again last week when she made friends with one of our 8 month-old cats. Obviously we had to treat her for worms, fleas and ticks... and she stank but is getting better! Problem is, she isn't house-trained any more. She knows where the cat-flap is, and uses it, but would rather go upstairs on the landing then go outside... Any hints and tips? If I catch her "in the act" I throw her out, but she tends to leave a mess at night.
  9. lots of free patterns at: http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/kategori_oversikt.php
  10. I don't find NVU primitive - although I use it in conjunction with CSSEdit and ocassionaly Smultron! Dreamweaver is probably overkill although it does write all your javascript functions for you - there was a free version some years ago that I used to use before NVU.
  11. ah, thanks for that. Yes, it was xylophene I was thinking of! Not that a circa 1950 oak Ercol set has anything on your antiques, but I can hear Mum turn in her grave every time I see the state of it in the barn and really want to get it inside!
  12. can I liberally paint that smelly stuff (the name escapes me...) that we sprayed the loft with on the underside of furniture to prevent woodworm? I'm particularly concerned about an Ercol table and chairs, but don't want to ruin the varnish (any more than 3 years in the barn has done!) I treated an ocasional table about 10 years ago in the UK, and was somewhat perturbed to find it coming away in bits - with the tell-tale french voracious woodworm holes, when I tried to move it to put the xmas decorations up!
  13. I've been detailed to take down 3 oak trees and turn them into firewood. From my limited experience of felling well-dead trees I remember them being hard as nails (mine were elms) and the normal rules did not apply! Cut out the wedge... cut through from the other side, then the blasted things sit hard as rock on the hinge... and finally topple in random directions when cut all the way through :( Any specific tips for cutting dead oaks??? Apparently directional felling is not an issue (phew!)
  14. I too find that Lidl's flaky pastry rises twice as much as other brands - and for half the price :)
  15. we're in 87 - and quite a lot of others are too!
  16. We find the Limoges shop (in the St Martial centre) to be overpriced and it only seems to stock the fashion clothes, not the "normal" things! Last time we went they were selling off all the stock, so either they have restocked or closed now.
  17. no you don't need another phone point. The livebox provides WIFI to the computers close enough, and it also has an ethernet port. The ethernet is connected to the old ADSL modem/router, which in this instance is acting as just a router as it provides WIFI and also an ethernet port. Actually our setup is more complicated than that, as we have a third ADSL/modem/router that is supplied by WIFI from the second and gives net access via ethernet to a computer at the far side of the house that isn't equiped for WIFI! There is no contention between any of the equipment - even in the zones where their coverage overlaps and you can pick which WIFI "network" to join! The point I was trying to make, was that often people have an old ADSL modem/router knocking around (ISPs in the UK used to require you to get your own, and here all the packages you get include one) so by piggy-backing them you can reach further at no extra cost. We had thick stone walls back in the UK, so one of our 'spares' used to be mounted under the eaves encased in what looked like a bat box and supplied WIFI to the garden - although I agree it's not much use when you can't see the screen because the light is too intense!
  18. yes, that's what I meant - we use the extra router to extend the network. It reaches the parts the livebox doesn't!
  19. ah, that would be it! I hesitated over the 'e' on the end of "savoie"...! I've heard of using a proportion of cornflour for lighter cakes and pastries, but have only the one recipe that calls for potato flour. Perhaps either of those would work instead of rice flour?
  20. you can get potato flour here too - an important ingredient in the recipe for "gateau de savoi" that my french penfriend's grandmother gave me over 30 years ago! It's called "fécule de pomme de terre". No idea why - I always thought flour = farine :)
  21. weeds that grow from seeds are easy to hoe out. Just run up & down the rows of veg at least once a week - I swear by a "push-me-pull-you" hoe - so easy to use! The difficult ones are the convolvulous, etc, with roots 2' down that just pop up everywhere... those need chemical warfare IMHO!
  22. any wi-fi router will do the job. We had a wi-fi router that we used to plug in to the phone socket in the UK, which gave us wi-fi for all our computers within a limited range. Here, we plug it into the orange-box and so extend the wi-fi range so now we can join the old network or the orangebox, depending on the location in the house.
  23. I'm confused. I have only ever had a paper licence. Does this expire or not? Should I look at replacing it with a french one or am I OK?
  24. many thanks - I've bought some puy lentils now so will try it out :)
