  7. I agree with you tony, however this guy sounds like he just wants the romance of it all. My advice is do what you feel good with, my recommendation is ' fill yer boots ' as they say up my way. Enjoy your wee trip touring about. I suppose i shall get pelters for egging you on but sometimes its best to just go with the flow, so to all who want to have a go at me i'll say just this......wind yer necks in  [:P]
  8. Hi folks, can anyone help me with some info, i have a block/beam ceiling which leaves me with a useable space in the loft area that has a concrete floor. Question is if i use the area to put in a spare bedroom and toilet what are the consequences with regard to tax de habitation etc, shall i be charged more for extra space? I feel that i shall but would like a few viewpoints befor embarking on the Mairie route, many thanks in advance, Hugh.
  9. Yes you can get similar, please excuse the spelling, they are called 'block a blanche' and can be bought from most builders merchants.
  10. it's a biggie & to part with it for mere money didn't seem right. Hi Chris, the 'mere money' you mention would enable you to buy that elusive sanding machine you need ???
  11. Billy connoly Robin williams Muhammed ali Frank carson Side splitting evening, no doubt.
  12. Is that the donor for the spare leg  that rolf harris used to sing about, Jake the peg deedle  eedle eeedle dum [:D]
  13. Therefore if you do not like what you are buying why buy it. Essentially why complain against something when you have the opportunity to say no. Now that is the voice of reason, i use them cos i have to, no point whingeing about them then booking with them. One of the reasons i am where i am, near to ryanair flights back to UK. Can you imagine how much our excursions would cost if it wasn't for cheap airlines forcing down the costs, poor service???? so what, they get you there and back. Now, global warming caused by the frequency of no frill airlines !! thats a different story [;-)]
  14. Had a few when back in Scotland with mates but not worried, thats normal i think after getting away from it all.Now back in France and onto my 5th week and only occasional thought/desire for a fag.?????? Cigarette.. Been back almost two weeks and cruising to the finishing post, but lets not be kidded here, i am a smoker who habitually stops. Even after 5 years the nicotine demons were screaming at me, maybe i'm just weak ??? Hugh.
  15. Maybe the poor wee thing was frozen................
  16. I have been in this business for many years and have learned a few harsh lessons, from customers i might add. I have done several jobs where no money was forthcoming after the work was finished. If you do work for someone and there is no materials to buy and you get shafted by non payment then you can write it off to experience however, if there are materials to buy and you buy them then you lose not only time, but your own personal money that you spent buying someone else's materials. I am at this moment trying to get money i am owed by clients who agreed to pay a deposit, the work was carried out to their standards ( and mine ) the stage payments/work were met ........until the final 3rd plus the agreed 5% held back for snagging. Unfortunately for me the work was finished, because we had built up a trust gained mutually from the time spent working there, i worked on at my expense to finish the job. Lesson learned here, although i am sure i shall get what i am owed but still a warning shot over the bows. I tell you this just to let you know that it does cut both ways and that there are unscrupulous clients out there as well as builders. Just to compound the facts, i done some work for a guy who moved here from the south, first money i received/ was offered in US dollars, brand new and sequential in number ?????? he then payed me some cash in Euros, as the agreed currency, i should have walked then but didn't. To cut a long story short we eventually left the job early after being refused another payment but it was obvious from the start that this guy was out to get as much for as little as possible. A dark night in a dark alley would be a grateful wish come true.
  17.  YES it is Wooooooooooo Think it would have looked better with a ciggie in its mouth  ha ha ha
  18. The end of the 3rd week is upon me, cruising thru even after spending a night in the pub watching the rugby final ( [:D] sorry folks ) amongst all the smokers. One thing for sure, my clothes didn't half stink, when i got home and got undressed the smell off of my pullover was ..............!!!!! Big test next week when i go back over to Scotland to meet up with some family and mates, going to spend weekend on a small island off of Mull to do some stuff ( hunting ) and have a lads session, a few of them smoke so will have to enforce a few rules re smoking areas. Best wishes to all who have given up or are in the process and also to those who are inspired by this thread.
  19. On my 2nd week now and this is the third time i have given up, been smoking since 13 yrs old. Previously smoked cigars and packed them in 5 years ago. Then i was due to go on holiday in Feb this year to Namibia, another shark fishing trip, and my dad got taken into hospital seriously ill, and we were all called in. To cut a long story short he died the day i was due to fly out, but in that week i smoked a few to de-stress and got hooked again. I have now given up and on the patches..............are'nt they a bitch to light !!![:P] Hang on in there, the nicotine gremlins will call soon.
  20. You could always set up the verticals/ montants at 500 mm centres and run the sheets horizontally that way you could have two at 1.2 mtrs and a cut section at the top of 400 mm and the tapered edges run horizontally too so there is really one bad edge to take care of, at the top. The beauty of this is that you have a small piece to struggle with up a step ladder and its easier to form smaller bits then whole sheets. Just a thought !!!!!
  21. Now Now ulster me old mate, take a chill pill. Moderator or not, we are all entitled to our opinion rightly or wrongly and pulling someone up on their diction is not very nice. Quite arrogant actually. He may have been totally pi--ed after the excitement of the game and typed a few errors, so what. Please bear in mind that this is a forum for all to air their views, we all cant be very knowledgeable about certain subjects, as you appear to be at rugby, more just opinionated and like to put in out tuppence worth. Have a drink, alcoholic or not, chill out and enjoy what has been a very good world cup, apart from Scotlands bad luck against Argentina, even though we all didn't get what we wanted in relation to results. PS What was it you said to me about ' patriotic ramblings ' [;-)]
  22. Sat navs are not an exact science is producing exact speeds either. I have used two in one car when my mate and i used to travel a lot when fishing and they often gave different readings also we used them on our boats to see if it was a fluke and they gave out the same differences at sea !!!
  23. I am from Sw Scotland and often take the whole day travelling back. We leave aroung 10pm to hit Paris around 2.30 to 3 am when its quiet, once clear of Paris its head down in the car for a few hours till its time to move to Boulogne (max 2 hrs drive ) in time for the first ferry. After that its downhill all the way [:(] the traffic from dover in the morning is hell on wheels, M25 next and then m6 north, by this time frustration takes over and i have to stop or i'll kill someone for cutting me up.......the downside is i am almost 24 hrs door to door. Fly Fly Fly all the way for me, except at xmas when the big shop takes over and the car is stuffed with all sorts to see us through till summer visitors arrive stiffed with more goodies for us.
  24. I don't like using joist hangers on old properties or on any if push comes to shove. I would much rather use acrow props and a good true edged beam to level and stabilise the joists before setting them in the walls on a pad stone or concrete footing. After that its a simple matter of settling in the joists with some natural stone that has been removed to create the pockets for the joists in the first instance. At least this way you can achieve a level throughout, afterwards, depending on what finish you are after, you can lay plasterboards direct onto the joists before laying your top floor covering of parquet etc and then all you have to do is the odd joint in the placo and seal around joints between placo/joists. If you wish to insulate then depending on floor to ceiling heights in the newly created room you can batten out on top of the placo to accomodate the depth of insulation before laying your parquet etc. Good luck whatever you choose to do, most important is to take your time, measure twice and cut once.
  25. OK, hands up, the puma's beat us, but it wasn't the riot forecast by some. Some terrible mistakes by Scotland gave them the victory more so than good play by Argentina. But then again that's my view and being Scottish entitles me to that much. Patriotic utterance over.
