  1. Oo, thanks mint! I keep thinking I’d like to visit Vienna, so I shall watch it with pleasure...
  2. Thank you so much for keeping us going, Hoddy, and a Merry Christmas to one and all.
  3. Ooo, mint, thank you for that recommendation! I am between good books at the moment, so I might grab it for the Kindle. I know what you mean about pausing sometimes when reading an English book; sometimes I have re-read a paragraph or two for the beautiful construction. :-)
  4. Thank you, mint. That was lovely. I learnt a lot about the chapel's history. I remembered how, when my daughter was at Anglia Poly, in Cambridge, you could pop into any college chapel for Evensong on a Sunday afternoon and always hear it so beautifully sung.
  5. Very sad to lose three such great names in such rapid succession.
  6. No, no, Hoddy. This was obviously a "chasse à courre", with mounted followers and a large pack of matching hounds - a far cry from the local chasseurs one regularly encounters.
  7. There's quite a detailed article here https://www.animals24-7.org/2019/11/25/pit-bull-or-hunting-hounds-who-killed-elisa-pilarski-unborn-child-enzo/ No DNA results yet, presumably.
  8. Yes, here in the UK I am sent a form to fill in at least every year, to confirm i am still a voter - and also to ask how many other people in my house are eligible.
  9. chilblains, ouch! I used to suffer agonies on my feet every winter. I suppose they finished when I moved to London and lived in a place with central heating. Lehaut, that's such a sad story of your fellow pupil.
  10. QUOTE patf Can anyone remember who was the comic radio character who used to say "I'm proper poorly!" END QUOTE Yes, it were Reg Dixon of Coventry! I recently discovered he was a distant cousin of my brother-in-law...
  11. “Butter beaten into sugar”? That's what my my mum used to ice cakes with! I have to hand it to you, though, Hoddy, with the frozen face flannel. Lemon and honey went down a treat tonight!
  12. Get well soon, idun. Sounds horrid. I like "ne pas être dans son assiette. Trust the French to find a foodie twist! I'm going to try your lemon concoction; sounds delish.
  13. Brrrrrr, that ice on the inside windows! It did make some beautiful patterns, though. I am under the weather at the moment so, like idun, lingering in my bed hoping it will pass soon. I might try the lemon drink; sounds good.

    Amazing, Norman! ?
  15. They definitely like disturbed earth; that’s why they were so prevalent on the battlefields. And also why you see them in cornfields.
  16. I think you're right, Idun. Wasn't there a double-taxation treaty even before we joined the EU? To the OP, this looks quite encouraging: https://www.blevinsfranks.com/news/article/french-succession-tax-estate-planning
  17. Or this https://www.impots.gouv.fr/portail/international-particulier/biens-imposables Or this https://www.notaires.fr/fr/expatriation/fiscalité-des-expatriés/expatriation-la-fiscalité-des-successions-internationales They all stress that you have to declare it within 12 months of the death occurring. Will we still have a double taxation agreement after Brexit? Who knows...
  18. I read that it was Rina's husband who has an ex-wife; not the deceased.
  19. Dunno about the yardarm time, but changing the hour is clearly not to be taken lightly in France https://www.ouest-france.fr/societe/entretien-changement-d-heure-comment-adapter-son-horloge-biologique-6583956
  20. Welcome to the forum, Chris, I did something similar to you, buying a small French car to leave at my résidence secondaire. It's too long ago now for me to give you a figure (I sold house and car two years ago), but I do remember that it wasn't outrageous to insure it via a local French insurance agent, and that he did take my UK no-claims bonus into account.
  21. Have you tried using a local French agent, Loire? (Sorry if this has been suggested before; I haven't re-read the whole thread.). I sold my house through a local branch of Square Habitat, and had nothing but praise for them.
  22. Oh gosh, there are only 6,000-odd signatures so far! A lot more needed in only a short time to have any chance of it being noticed.
