Torture

If it's legal then it must be OK. Remember Blair took 'legal advice' that his attack on Iraq was 'legal' and was told it was. Well he said he was told it was but that the advice was secret and could not be made public. Some years later the supposed legal adviser admitted that he gave no such advice. The law is a wonderful thing and must be respected. .

Torture

Since 1945 a myth has prevailed about our (USA really) moral superiority over other societies We suddenly discovered how outraged we were at the Nazi concentration camps and knew it couldn't happen here, Communism was evil as we knew but later when Russia abandoned Communism it was, and still is, Russia that is evil. Then the US discovered terrorism and we all jumped to attention because it was important and that IRA stuff in England and Ulster wasn't so bad really. It has always been just propaganda. A Russian journalist put it well. "American propaganda is so much better than Russian propaganda because the American people actually believe it."
4.
Surely, Ukraine has the right to choose its destiny. Now watch what happens in Moldova. The Americans have not been particularly hostile towards Russia since the end of the Cold War.
Ukraine did have an elected government but interference in their affairs caused its overthrow by the the western side which was attracted towards Europe and the country split in two. If the US is not hostile to Russia where are all the missiles they have set up in eastern Europe pointing?
5.
"The Kremlin has been betting on the National Front," Jauvert said. "It considers the party able to take power in France and potentially reverse the course of European history in favour of Moscow". The Kremlin will be betting on anybody that can help it keep Ukraine out of the EU and away from any chance of joining NATO so the Americans can have a base on their doorstep .
A sensible and understandable policy. What did we expect by interfering in Ukraine and continued support of the Yanks hostility towards Russia.
6. The only thing in question was the P word in this libel case.. If the judge believed it wasn't said Mitchell won, otherwise he lost. The characters and decency of each party was irrelevant. The police as a whole lost a great deal of respect due to their activities in this case. Politically the police are more important than Mitchell. And so it was. The 3 million quid to his (and the other side's) barristers will be picked up somewhere and everyone will be happy.
7. We have had many French youngsters in our home over the years. Seems like no schools or other organisations do this any longer due to the 'safety checks' which are now required and the reluctance of anyone to risk possible accusations Private arrangements are still ok as we still do with friends. The modern world.
8.
"the proportion of UKIP types in the expat population in France is much higher than in the UK itself." I hope you're including the citizens of Sangatte when you talk about 'the expat population in France', just to keep the balance, because there'll be a fair few ex-Sangattians skewing the stats on the other side.
Brits who go to foreign countries of their choosing to live are expats. This is a positive concept. Foreigners who move to other countries are immigrants. Get with the programme. Hey, What do you call a Kenyan who has a Phd in astrophysics, speaks 6 languages and writes poetry. Answer: A bloody immigrant.
9. Blair gained nothing for us by dragging us into another of America's wars. 2 million on the streets and he didn't give a stuff. He did all right for himself though. Strangely, even though the Taliban had virtually destroyed opium production in Afghanistan the country is now back in top place as the main US and European heroin producer. Business is business.
10. In my many years in France I have seen that the proportion of UKIP types in the expat population in France is much higher than in the UK itself. Some years ago it was a generous French system which allowed benefits to all. When money started to become tighter some fonc noticed that many non French were claiming RMI (Income Support) despite driving new cars and living in large houses. The largest nationality doing this were ...... How they moaned.
11. Less a myth and more a case of professional propaganda and disinformation. The media go along for the ride.
